Improving the quality of workers' compensation health care delivery: the Washington State Occupational Health Services Project.

This article has summarized research and policy activities undertaken in Washington State over the past several years to identify the key problems that result in poor quality and excessive disability among injured workers, and the types of system and delivery changes that could best address these problems in order to improve the quality of occupational health care provided through the workers' compensation system. Our investigations have consistently pointed to the lack of coordination and integration of occupational health services as having major adverse effects on quality and health outcome

Study of the knowledge, attitude of Egyptian health care workers towards occupational HIV infection.

Acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was reported for the first time in Egypt in 1986. Up to March 1993, 60 cases were notified to the Ministry of Health and 359 were detected to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most cases had acquired infection abroad through blood, blood products or sexual contact. The number of cases is continuously increasing. Fear and ignorance about HIV infection causes panic among health care workers (HCWs) whenever a case is discovered and needs medical care. We assessed the knowledge and attitude of 346 HCWs towards the probability of occupat

[Mental disorders related to persistent negative working conditions].

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common in our industrialised society and inevitably affect the working population. Over the last few years greater attention has been focussed on work-related psychopathologies due to an increasing number of studies regarding workplace bullying. OBJECTIVES: This study reports our observations on patients with mental disorders who came to our Occupational Health Centre because they perceived themselves to be victims of negative working conditions. An indepth analysis of their working conditions led us to the conclusion that many of these disorders were to be at

[Occupational brucellosis in slaughtering of sheep and goats: study of five cases from a municipal abattoir in south-eastern Sicily].

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a world-wild zoonosis of bacterial origin. In Italy, where reporting of the disease is mandatory, the incidence is 2.1 cases every 100,000 inhabitants, but tends to be higher in southern regions. However, the incidence decreased from 1999 to 2002. CASES: Five cases of occupational brucellosis, four slaughter-house operators and one veterinary surgeon, were reported in a slaughter-house in south-eastern Sicily employing 15 people. RESULTS: A study of the slaughtering process for sheep and goats led to identification of 23 different operations, some of which involved

Occupational risk factors for the sporadic form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Some case reports among European farmers and a few case-control studies suggested the hypothesis of an increased risk of the sporadic form of CJD (sCJD) associated with livestock farming or work as a butcher. Also, the discovery of the possibility of transmission of the disease via blood or by contact following corneal or dura madre transplant suggested that health occupations might also run higher sCJD risks. However, a meta-analysis of three case-control studies and a multicentre European study did not find any positive association between sCJD and health-related jobs or occupational contact

[Contact allergies in medical occupations].

Based on reports in the literature, data from the information network of German dermatology centres (Informationsverbund Dermatologischer Kliniken) and the authors own findings, a review is presented on prevalence, clinical picture and causative agents of contact allergic dermatoses in health care professions. In 1991 the proportion of suspected occupational diseases in the health care professions (including hairdressers) represented by cases of dermatitis, as reported to the responsible insurance institution, reached 72% of the total for the year (7287 out of 10127). Every 20th to 40th case w

Brucella canis as an Underrecognized Zoonotic Threat: Human Infection, Diagnostic Challenges, and Public Health Implications.

Brucella canis is a recognized zoonotic pathogen associated with human infection in a variety of epidemiological settings; however, the magnitude of its impact on human health remains uncertain because of its nonspecific clinical presentation, limited availability of species-specific diagnostic methods, and insufficient awareness among physicians, veterinarians, microbiologists, and public health professionals. Unlike classical human brucellosis caused by smooth Brucella species, B. canis infection may be overlooked, potentially leading to delayed diagnosis and incomplete case detection. This

Return to work following sickness absence due to infectious mononucleosis.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus infectious mononucleosis among adults is notorious because of the prolonged incapacitating fatigue it causes. AIMS: To investigate the duration of sickness absence and return to work following infectious mononucleosis. METHODS: Episodes of sickness absence due to infectious mononucleosis were selected from an occupational health services register. The duration of sickness absence and return to work was assessed with Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. RESULTS: Two thousand one hundred and thirty-seven episodes of absence due to infectious mononucleosis had a media

How significant are the risks from occupational exposure to ionizing radiation?

Radiologists and other physicians practicing in specialties where their principal operational procedures involve the use of ionizing radiation have health risks associated with their occupational exposures. Based on two years of film badge records from this institution, it was estimated that the general radiologists received an annual occupational dose equivalent of 350 mrems. The corresponding doses for therapeutic radiologists and those practicing special procedures and cardiac catheterization were 110 mrems and 550 mrems. The estimated excess cancer deaths for general radiologists would be

[Violence against physicians in Germany].

BACKGROUND: Violence against healthcare workers and physicians poses a significant occupational risk and can have serious implications for the health of both physicians and patients as well as social and economic repercussions. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of violence against physicians in general. METHODS: In an anonymous online survey, physicians and dentists were asked about their personal experiences with violence in a workplace setting. A link to a stru

GPs, violence and work performance - 'just part of the job?'.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the impact of work related violence on general practitioners' work performance. METHOD: A postal survey of 1000 randomly selected GPs about work related violence. Those GPs reporting incidents of work related violence in the past 12 months were asked to write about its effect on them in response to an open question. RESULTS: Eighty-five GPs responded. Seventy-three percent of GPs who had experienced work related violence answered an open question about its effect on their work performance. The effect was negative for most, respondents citing poor concentration

Occupational Medicine and Total Worker Health®: from preventing health and safety risks in the workplace to promoting health for the total well-being of the worker.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of Public Health interventions for global social and economic development. Still, the community's well-being depends on each individual's health. In addition to pandemics, health conditions can be altered by chronic degenerative diseases, aging, disabilities, and work. Personal behaviors such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug use can also affect health and safety at work. In the last twenty years, we have witnessed rapid changes in the nature of work, workplace and workforce. I

Building-related illness and employee lost time following application of hot asphalt roof: a call for prevention.

Industrial hygiene sampling within an office building during and following a roof renovation revealed low-level exposure to high-boiling organic compounds, associated with complaints of eye and upper respiratory tract irritation among building occupants. Health complaints continued substantially beyond the time frame of the renovation completion, despite a lack of objective industrial hygiene findings for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and microbiological contamination, and a lack of consistent medical findings among employees evaluated by an occupational physician. An analysis of employee

Immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases among pregnant employees in Germany. A situation analysis before the introduction of the Measles Protection Act.

BACKGROUND: Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases prior to pregnancy is an important measure of primary prevention both for the mother and the unborn child. We analyzed immunity rates against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and pertussis in pregnant employees in Germany prior to significant changes in legal conditions in 2020, to provide a basis of comparison for future research. METHODS: We analyzed occupational-medical routine data in three collectives of pregnant women with an occupational risk of infection in the years 2018 and 2019: 1: hospital staff with regular access t
