"Smile-Obates": Permanent Dental Development in the White-Handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar carpenteri).

OBJECTIVES: Tooth formation is not as well known as eruption among the Hylobatidae. To expand knowledge of variability in dental development in hylobatids, we described the relative timing of upper and lower permanent tooth initiation, mineralization, and completion in the white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar carpenteri). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a wild-shot, known-sex sample of H. lar carpenteri, we micro-CT scanned 44 crania with permanent teeth forming, including a subset of 16 skulls with mandibles. We used these data to assess crypt, crown, and root formation. Each tooth received a den

Tooth Root Development and Homeostasis during Eruptive and Post-eruptive Movement.

Tooth eruption is the process whereby the developing tooth moves to its functional position in the occlusal plane and it occurs concomitantly with formation of the tooth root, which is a critical component of the tooth anchored to surrounding alveolar bone through the periodontal ligament. Post-eruptive tooth movement ensues that once occlusion is achieved, the teeth maintain their alignment within the alveolar bone to facilitate proper bite function through periodontium remodelling. Tooth overeruption presents a clinically significant issue, yet the precise mechanisms by which alterations in

Permian hypercarnivore suggests dental complexity among early amniotes.

The oldest known complex terrestrial vertebrate community included hypercarnivorous varanopids, a successful clade of amniotes with wide geographic and temporal distributions. Little is known about their dentition and feeding behaviour, but with the unprecedented number of specimens of the varanopid Mesenosaurus from cave deposits in Oklahoma, we show that it exhibited serrations on the tooth crowns, and exceptionally rapid rates of development and reduced longevity relative to other terrestrial amniotes. In contrast, the coeval large apex predator Dimetrodon greatly increased dental longevity

Squamate egg tooth development revisited using three-dimensional reconstructions of brown anole (Anolis sagrei, Squamata, Dactyloidae) dentition.

The egg tooth is a hatching adaptation, characteristic of all squamates. In brown anole embryos, the first tooth that starts differentiating is the egg tooth. It develops from a single tooth germ and, similar to the regular dentition of all the other vertebrates, the differentiating egg tooth of the brown anole passes through classic morphological and developmental stages named according to the shape of the dental epithelium: epithelial thickening, dental lamina, tooth bud, cap and bell stages. The differentiating egg tooth consists of three parts: the enamel organ, hard tissues and dental pul

The cell biology and role of resorptive cells in diseases: A review.

Resorptive cells are responsible for the resorption of mineralized matrix of hard tissues. Bone-resorbing cells are called osteoclasts; however, they can resorb mineralized dental tissues or calcified cartilage and then they are called odontoclasts and chondroclasts, respectively. Resorptive cells form when mononuclear precursors derived from a monocyte-macrophage cell lineage are attracted to certain mineralized surfaces and subsequently fuse and adhere onto them for exerting their resorbing activity. These cells are responsible for degradation of calcified extracellular matrix composed of or

Etiology of maxillary canine impaction: a review.

This article is a review that enumerates the causes of impaction of the maxillary permanent canines, including hard tissue obstructions, soft tissue lesions, and anomalies of neighboring teeth, and discusses the much-argued relationship between environmental and genetic factors. These phenomena have been shown in many investigations to accompany the diagnosis of canine impaction and have been presented as unrelated anomalous features, each of which is etiologically construed as genetic, including the aberrant canine itself. While in general the influence of genetics pervades the wider picture,

Role of genes in oro-dental diseases.

In oral cavity, the spectrum of diseases due to genetic alterations ranges from developmental disturbances of teeth to the pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions. Of late, significant progress has been made in the molecular analysis of tumors. With molecular genetic testing emerging as diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic approach, a review of genetic alterations ranging from the development of oro-facial structures to the tumors in the head and neck region are addressed in this article. The functional regulatory aspect of genes in relation to oro-facial structures are discussed separately, i.

Dental evidence for ontogenetic differences between modern humans and Neanderthals.

Humans have an unusual life history, with an early weaning age, long childhood, late first reproduction, short interbirth intervals, and long lifespan. In contrast, great apes wean later, reproduce earlier, and have longer intervals between births. Despite 80 y of speculation, the origins of these developmental patterns in Homo sapiens remain unknown. Because they record daily growth during formation, teeth provide important insights, revealing that australopithecines and early Homo had more rapid ontogenies than recent humans. Dental development in later Homo species has been intensely debate

Rapid dental development in a Middle Paleolithic Belgian Neanderthal.

The evolution of life history (pace of growth and reproduction) was crucial to ancient hominin adaptations. The study of dental development facilitates assessment of growth and development in fossil hominins with greater precision than other skeletal analyses. During tooth formation, biological rhythms manifest in enamel and dentine, creating a permanent record of growth rate and duration. Quantification of these internal and external incremental features yields developmental benchmarks, including ages at crown completion, tooth eruption, and root completion. Molar eruption is correlated with

Ultrastructural and cytochemical studies on the matrix vesicle calcification in the teeth of the killifish, Oryzias latipes.

Tooth germs of killifish were examined by both ultrastructural and cytochemical methods. The ultrastructure of the dentin in the early calcification stage of its development resembled that of mammals. Numerous extracellular membrane-bounded vesicles, matrix vesicles, were seen in the predentinal space, especially abundantly in the basal portion of the tooth germ. They were more numerous and more uniform in appearance than in any other higher vertebrates. Where calcification was going to start, slightly identifiable needles of apatite crystals were found in the vesicular structures. Crystals in

Rare Genetic Variants in Human APC Are Implicated in Mesiodens and Isolated Supernumerary Teeth.

The activation of Wnt/β-catenin signalling is a prerequisite for odontogenesis. APC, a member of the AXIN-CK1-GSK3β-APC β-catenin destruction complex, functions to modulate Wnt/β-catenin signalling to establish regular teeth number and positions. APC loss-of-function mutations are associated with the over-activation of WNT/β-catenin signalling and subsequent familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP; MIM 175100) with or without multiple supernumerary teeth. The ablation of Apc function in mice also results in the constitutive activation of β-catenin in embryonic mouse epithelium and causes supernume

Effects of human vascular endothelial growth factor on reparative dentin formation.

It is a challenge for dentists to save dental pulp in patients with pulp disease without resorting to root canal therapy. Formation of tertiary dentin to maintain pulp vitality is a key odontoblast response to dental pulp injury. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the most potent angiogenic and vasculogenic factor involved in tertiary dentin formation. It was hypothesized that VEGF may be used to treat pulp diseases such as pulpitis. To explore this hypothesis, the first step was to assess whether VEGF affects dental pulp cells to promote reparative dentin formation. In the current s

Morphogenesis and bone integration of the mouse mandibular third molar.

The mouse third molar (M3) develops postnatally and is thus a unique model for studying the integration of a non-mineralized tooth with mineralized bone. This study assessed the morphogenesis of the mouse M3, related to the alveolar bone, comparing M3 development with that of the first molar (M1), the most common model in odontogenesis. The mandibular M3 was evaluated from initiation to eruption by morphology and by assessing patterns of proliferation, apoptosis, osteoclast distribution, and gene expression. Three-dimensional reconstruction and explant cultures were also used. Initiation of M3

Investigating the etiology of multiple tooth agenesis in three sisters with severe oligodontia.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the dentofacial phenotypes of three sisters with severe non-syndromic oligodontia, to report on the mutation analysis in three genes, previously shown to cause various phenotypes of non-syndromic oligodontia and in two other suspected genes. Based on the phenotypes in the pedigree of this family, the different possible patterns of transmission are discussed. METHODS: Anamnestic data and a panoramic radiograph were taken to study the phenotype of the three sisters and their first-degree relatives. Blood samples were also taken to obtain their karyotypes and DNA samples.

Epigenetic influences may explain dental differences in monozygotic twin pairs.

BACKGROUND: Comparisons between monozygotic (MZ) co-twins have tended to focus on the similarities between their dentitions rather than differences. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of discordant expression for simple hypodontia and supernumerary teeth in MZ twin pairs and to explain how phenotypic differences might occur despite their similar genotypes. METHODS: Records of 278 pairs of MZ twins, including dental casts and radiographs, were examined and the prevalences of discordant expression for missing upper lateral incisors (ULI) or second premolars (PM2), and of mesi
