Novel antioxidant-active food packaging based on olive oil byproducts extracts.

Food waste reduction remains a major challenge in the European Union, where annual losses exceed 88 million tons. Active food packaging offers a sustainable strategy to extend shelf-life and maintain product quality. This study evaluated the antioxidant performance of natural extracts from olive by-products stone, leaf and pomace obtained through a green ethanol-based extraction. Polyphenolic profiles were determined by UHPLC-DAD, and antioxidant capacity was measured using DPPH assays, with olive stone extract showing the best activity (EC50 = (63.6 ± 4.6) mg/L). Total biophenol contents rang

Olive polyphenols as modulators of amyloid aggregation: mechanisms and implications for neurodegenerative diseases.

The Mediterranean diet is well known for its role in promoting healthy aging and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) recognized as a key contributor to these benefits. Among EVOO's constituents, minor phenolic compounds have emerged as principal mediators of its biological activity. Given the pivotal role of amyloid aggregation in protein misfolding disorders (PMDs), considerable research over the past two decades has focused on amyloidogenic proteins and the discovery of natural compounds capable of modulating their aggregation. This review summarizes cur

Hematinic Potential of Olive Leaf Extract: Evidence from an In Vivo Study in Mice and a Pilot Study in Healthy Human Volunteers.

Natural resources have recently received considerable attention as complementary or alternative hematinic agents. In this regard, olive leaf extract, which is rich in bioactive phenolic compounds, has been reported to induce erythroid differentiation in human hematopoietic stem cells. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to explore the potential hematinic properties of aqueous olive leaf extract (WOL) in vivo. After 24 days of administering WOL to healthy mice orally, red blood cell (RBC), hematocrit, reticulocyte, and reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) showed a significant increase. A

Competitive adsorptive removal of promazine and promethazine from wastewater using olive tree pruning biochar: operational parameters, kinetics, and equilibrium investigations.

This research aims to remove two phenothiazines, promazine (PRO) and promethazine (PMT), from their individual and binary mixtures using olive tree pruning biochar (BC-OTPR). The impact of individual and combinatory effects of operational variables was evaluated for the first time using central composite design (CCD). Simultaneous removal of both drugs was maximized utilizing the composite desirability function. At low concentrations, the uptake of PRO and PMT from their individual solutions was achieved with high efficiency of 98.64%, 47.20 mg/g and 95.87%, 38.16 mg/g, respectively. No major

Cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis were attenuated by olive leaf extract treatment in a rat model of diabetes.

The key role of fibrosis and hypertrophy processes in developing diabetes-induced heart injury has been demonstrated. Considering the known hypoglycemic effects of olive leaf extract (OLE), we decided to investigate its potential effect and associated mechanisms on cardiac fibrosis and myocardial hypertrophy in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Eight groups were included in this study: control, diabetic, diabetic-OLEs (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg), diabetic-metformin (300 mg/kg), diabetic-valsartan (30 mg/kg), and diabetic-metformin/valsartan (300/30 mg/kg). After a treatment period of 6

Target-based virtual screening and molecular interaction studies for lead identification of natural olive compounds against glioblastoma multiforme.

Glioblastoma multiforme, a rare traumatic brain disorder, is at the research climax for its uncontrolled growth leading to a catastrophic outcome. Throwing light on the target-based virtual screening of drugs using natural phytocompounds is a striking cornerstone in glioblastoma-based drug discovery, accelerating with leaps and bounds. This project aims to develop promising lead compounds against glioblastoma brain cancer using OliveNet™, an open-source database. In this pursuit, our rationale for selecting molecules was based on their capability to pass through the blood-brain barrier. Out of

Calcium-modified clinoptilolite as a recovery medium of phosphate and potassium from anaerobically digested olive mill wastewater.

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is characterized as a high-strength effluent due to the high organic load, low biodegradability, and presence of phytotoxic compounds. Most of the OMW treatment methods proposed, including adsorption, focus mainly on the reduction of chemical oxygen demand and recovery of polyphenols. Adsorption studies aiming at nutrient removal from OMW are very limited. In the present work, Ca(OH)2-treated zeolite (CaT-Z) in a granular form was used for simultaneous recovery of phosphate (PO43-) and potassium (K+) ions from two samples of anaerobically digested OMW. Nutrient adso

Neurotrophins' Modulation by Olive Polyphenols.

BACKGROUND: Polyphenols are probably the most known and investigated molecules of nutritional interest as micronutrients present in abundance in our diet. Some of the most important food sources of polyphenols in the Mediterranean diet are olives and olive oil. A growing body of evidence from animal models to clinical studies indicates that polyphenol compounds may have neuroprotective effects in several pathologies of the nervous system through the control of oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: Based on the most recent scientific literature, di

Olive leaf-derived exosome-like vesicles attenuate neurotoxicity in an in vitro rotenone model of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease primarily characterized by dopaminergic neuronal loss, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and protein aggregation. Despite extensive research, current therapeutic options remain limited to symptomatic management, underscoring the need for neuroprotective strategies targeting disease pathology. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective potential of exosome-like vesicles derived from olive (Olea europaea) leaves (Ole-ELVs) in an in vitro PD model induced by rotenone in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. Rapid screening of oleuropein from olive leaves using matrix solid-phase dispersion and high-performance liquid chromatography.

Matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) methodology as a quick and easy extraction method has been developed to extract oleuropein from Olea europaea leaves. This method has been compared with conventional maceration and Soxhlet extraction (SOXE) methods. Variables affecting MSPD, such as the sorbent material, the ratio of sample to sorbent material, elution solvent, and volume of the elution solvent, have been fully evaluated and optimized. Oleuropein was successfully extracted by silica sorbent with 350 microL of dichloromethane-methanol (70 + 30, v/v) as the elution solvent. The calibration cu

Detection of profilin in SPT extracts that are supposed to contain it.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Profilin is a panallergen contained in pollen, plant foods and latex. Although cross-reactivity is expected while performing skin prick tests (SPT) with allergens that contain profilin, this is not always noticed. The purpose of this study was to detect if profilin is contained in the commercial SPT extracts of pollen and plant foods which, in their fresh form, contain determined epitopes of profilin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Commercial SPT extracts of different pharmaceuticals were analyzed using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).

Mercurialis annua: characterization of main allergens and cross-reactivity with other species.

A multicentric study was conducted to evaluate the frequency of Mercurialis annua pollen sensitization in several areas of Spain and to select a population sample to characterize the main allergenic components in M. annua pollen. Patients were recruited from six hospitals in Spain. Out of 420 patients sensitized to pollens, 195 (46.4%) showed positive skin tests to M. annua, thus evidencing the high level of sensitization to the pollen of this plant in Spain. Thirty-seven sera with RAST class values to M. annua > or = 3 were selected for SDS-PAGE immunoblotting analysis. Two main allergenic co

Bread eating induced oral angioedema due to alpha-amylase allergy.

Inhalation of dust from different enzymes can be the cause of occupational asthma in exposed workers. Enzymes from different sources are being increasingly used in food. Few cases of food allergy to alpha-amylase induced by eating bread have been reported. Those cases were reported in bakery-related patients and in a pharmaceutical-industry worker. A 25-year-old farmer suffered sneezing, rhinorrhea, oropharyngeal itching, hoarseness, cough, and non-wheezy dyspnea after eating white bread. Skin prick tests (SPT) with common aeroallergens and food allergens revealed only sensitization to Olea eu

Table Olive Fermentation: Microbial Ecology, Metabolite Transformation, and Emerging Non-Thermal and Omics-Based Technologies.

Table olive fermentation is a complex microbial process in which lactic acid bacteria and yeasts contribute to the transformation of phenolic compounds, organic acids, and volatile metabolites that influence product quality, safety, and functionality. Fermentation outcomes remain variable because of cultivar characteristics, spontaneous microbial succession, and limited control over microbial and biochemical dynamics. Recent research has therefore shifted toward a more mechanistic understanding of microbial-metabolite interactions and strategies for more reproducible fermentation control. This
