BACKGROUND: Limitations to terminal elbow extension (TEE) in pediatric populations have been commonly associated with the degree of ligamentous laxity and not bony factors. Ligamentous laxity, quantified through the Beighton score, is criticized for unreliably assessing joint mobility. This study aims to show that the olecranon-coronoid notch angle (OCNA) affects TEE in healthy children and adolescents.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 711 pediatric patients treated for upper extremity and shoulder injuries was cross-sectionally studied at 2 tertiary centers from 2014 to 2021. Radiographs we

BACKGROUND: Tension-band wiring (TBW) and plate fixation are commonly used to fix displaced olecranon fractures. However, the high incidence of complications in the elderly, such as wound breakdown, infection, and loss of reduction, remain a concern for orthopaedic surgeons. Furthermore, patients frequently suffer from removal of the hardware. Even so, the operation seems to be indicated for independent elderly patients to return to their former activities of daily living.
HYPOTHESIS: TBW of displaced stable olecranon fractures with Eyelet-pins in the independent elderly reduce the incidence

Intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus present challenges to treating physician and patient alike. The olecranon osteotomy is accepted as the standard exposure for intra-articular distal humerus fractures; nevertheless, complications such as nonunion and implant prominence are common. In this article, we describe the clinical outcomes and anatomic features of the triceps tenotomy as an alternative method of exposure for internal fixation of intra-articular distal humerus fractures. The olecranon osteotomy approach affords greater exposure of the distal humerus articular surface; howev

Distal humerus fractures in the elderly are a difficult problem to treat. Open reduction internal fixation has a high rate of complications, particularly because osteopenia compromises what is already tenuous fixation in a metaphyseal fracture. Total elbow arthroplasty is a more predictable outcome and easier recovery for these patients. However, most surgeons perform a low volume of total elbow arthroplasty. In addition, traditional exposure requires detachment of the triceps tendon. The lateral paraolecranon approach maintains the central tendon attachment to the olecranon while still facili

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness between paratricipital approach and chevron olecranon V osteotomy approach for the treatment of type C3 (AO/OTA) distal humeral fractures and investigate the details of operation.
METHODS: Between April 2010 and September 2016, 36 type C3 (AO/OTA) distal humeral fractures were treated with open reduction and bicolumnar orthogonal locking plating fixation by paratricipital approach and chevron olecranon V osteotomy approach respectively. The patients were divided into 2 groups by approach, there were 17 cases in paratricipital group (group A) and the bic

Epidermal cyst is a dermal or subcutaneous epithelial cyst that contains keratin and is lined by true epidermis. Although extremely rare, it can cause pathology including nerve compression syndrome. We report a rare case of ulnar nerve compression in the elbow that was caused by olecranon bursitis and concomitant epidermal cyst in a 67-year-old man. The ulnar nerve was immediately adjacent to the olecranon bursa and was significantly compressed. There was no connection between the tumor and the ulnar nerve. Pain, numbness, and weakness in his ring and little fingers disappeared after resection

INTRODUCTION: Olecranon bursitis (OB) is a benign but disturbing condition that may adversely affect a military recruit's combat preparedness. This study was designed to assess incidence, risk factors, and associated medical burden of OB in the Israel Defense Forces.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study drawing on medical records of all Israel Defense Forces soldiers diagnosed as having OB between 2005 and 2015. OB was classified as septic and noninfectious. Crude incidence rates and duty-specific incidence rates were calculated. Medical burden was defined by the number of phy

BACKGROUND: Tension-band wiring (TBW) is a well-established fixation technique for two-part, transverse fracture types of the olecranon. However, complication rates up to 80 % are reported. By reporting on the enormous impact on the patient if failed the aim of the present report was to emphasize the importance of correct K wire positioning in TBW.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 49-year-old woman who suffered from a radioulnar synostosis of the forearm due to malpositioned K wires after TBW treatment. The patient was treated by heterotopic bone resection supported by ossification

INTRODUCTION: The optimal management of olecranon bursitis is ill-defined. The purposes of this review were to systematically evaluate clinical outcomes for aseptic versus septic bursitis, compare surgical versus nonsurgical management, and examine the roles of corticosteroid injection and aspiration in aseptic bursitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The English-language literature was searched using PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Allied and Complementary Medicine, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Analyses were pe

In brief: A radiographic study of 21 bull riders and 18 bareback riders was conducted to determine the bony changes that result over time from elbow injuries in professional cowboys. X-rays revealed 39 bony abnormalities in the bull riders and 37 in the bareback riders. More than 60% of these changes occurred in the medial epicondyle and the posterior aspect of the olecranon process. Surprisingly, 30 of the injuries affected the free arm rather than the gripping arm. The authors recommend that riders tape both elbows to prevent hyperextension and that they wear a pad for protection from an ani

The authors have studied a particular type of traumatic lesion of the elbow which combines a fracture of the olecranon with a dislocation of both bones of the forearm, the radius and ulna remaining normally aligned to one another. The displacement was either forward (4 cases) or backward (6 cases). In some cases a partial fracture of the radial head or the lateral condyle of the humerus was also present and resulted in considerable instability. Internal fixation should always be tried but was not always possible. In one case a pedicle transplant of the medial epicondyle was made to restore a f

AIMS: Articular impaction in olecranon fractures has been under-recognized. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical implications of articular impaction, and to identify factors associated with poor postoperative outcomes following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
METHODS: Patients who underwent ORIF for olecranon fractures were retrospectively reviewed. Articular impaction was assessed using preoperative CT scans, and articular impaction reduction quality was categorized based on residual depression. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS)

BACKGROUND: Tension band wire fixation (TBW) is a well-described method for treating displaced olecranon fractures. Further surgery is often needed due to wound breakdown or prominent hardware. An all-suture technique has recently been described as an alternative to TBW but radiographic and clinical outcome are not well established. The aim of this single-center retrospective cohort study was to evaluate outcome after treatment with all-suture technique for simple displaced olecranon fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective review of olecranon fractures in patients (> 18 years) treated for displac

The aim of this study was to report the epidemiological characteristics and the experience of 5 departments of trauma, in France, in the management of fractures of the proximal ulna. 163 patients with fractures of the proximal ulna with a mean age of 49.9 years (range 16-97) were managed. The most common mode of injury was a motor vehicle collision (48%). 18% sustained associated injuries to the ipsilateral limb. Open fractures were present in 42 patients (25%). A total of 109 patients had a fracture of the olecranon, with the Mayo 2A and B types most frequently seen (66%). The patients were i

Intraosseous schwannomas are extremely rare benign tumors originating from Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. While these tumors are commonly found in the mandible and sacrum, their occurrence in long bones, particularly the ulna, is uncommon. A 59-year-old female patient was admitted with a two-year history of pain and swelling in her right elbow. Radiographic imaging revealed a lytic lesion with cortical expansion and thinning in the proximal ulna metaphysis, while magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion with irregular borders extending into the joint via cortical erosion.
