Future challenges for parasitology: vector control and one health in the Americas.

"One Health" is a term that encapsulates and underscores the inherent interrelatedness of the health of people, animals, and the environment. Vector-borne infections are central in one health. Many arthropod vectors readily feed on humans and other animals, serving as an ideal conduit to move pathogens between a wide spectrum of potential hosts. As ecological niches flux, opportunities arise for vectors to interact with novel species, allowing infectious agents to broaden both geographic and host ranges. Habitat change has been linked to the emergence of novel human and veterinary disease agen

Food Safety: at the center of a One Health approach for combating zoonoses.

Food Safety is at the center of One Health. Many, if not most, of all important zoonoses relate in some way to animals in the food production chain. Therefore, the food becomes an important vehicle for many, but not all, of these zoonotic pathogens. One of the major issues in food safety over the latest decennia has been the lack of cross-sectoral collaboration across the food production chain. Major food safety events have been significantly affected by the lack of collaboration between the animal health, the food control, and the human health sector. Examples range from BSE and E. coli outbr

Local veterinary diagnostic laboratory, a model for the one health initiative.

The San Diego County Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) is unique in its emphasis on protecting both human and animal health in San Diego County, and its use of interagency and community collaboration to create strong, effective public health programs. This article describes the ADDL core programs of avian and vector-borne disease surveillance, rabies testing, and animal abuse investigations and uses selected case studies to illustrate the need for a local veterinary diagnostic laboratory to safeguard the health of humans and animals. The ADDL serves as a role model for other local co

The exposome and the human oral microbiome through the one health lens.

OBJECTIVES: To map and synthesise current evidence on how lifelong biological, environmental, and social exposures, collectively conceptualised as the exposome, interact with the human oral microbiome to influence oral disease development and progression within a One Health framework. DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published in English that examined the relationships between the exposome and the human oral microbiome. The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework, applying its five-stage methodological approach. Comprehensive searches were per

One Health perspectives on veterinary residues and bioaccumulation in marine mussels.

The increase in pharmaceutical residues and environmental contaminants, including heavy metals and biotoxins, in coastal ecosystems represents a critical threat to global health. Mussels (Mytilus spp.), as sessile filter feeders, serve as primary bioaccumulators and biological indicators of this chemical pressure, yet their toxicological role in human health is often underestimated. This review explores the physiological and toxicological effects of the accumulation of complex contaminants and pharmaceutical residues, specifically including veterinary drugs that reach the marine environment th

MERS-CoV in Africa: a One Health review of the silent reservoir.

Africa harbours more than 80% of the world's dromedary camels, with a pooled MERS-CoV seroprevalence of 73·7%; however, no autochthonous outbreak in humans has been documented. In this Review, we weigh five interacting explanations for the absence of documented human outbreaks based on the strength of the evidence for each explanation. The primary explanation is virological; many, although not all, African clade C MERS-CoV strains show reduced replication competence in human respiratory tissues, and clade C strains have not become established in Arabian camels or humans despite decades of larg

Medicinal plants as biological and socio-ecological components of One Health.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 40% of contemporary pharmaceuticals are derived from natural products and traditional knowledge sources, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) remain underrepresented in global health policy frameworks. While the One Health concept emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health, MAPs have historically been viewed mainly as passive resources rather than as dynamic biological and ecological actors. This review synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence published from 2015 to 2025 to reframe medicinal

The importance of integrating evolutionary-developmental perspectives into One Health approaches.

Accelerating pressures, including climate change, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the growing burden of chronic disease, have revealed severely siloed medical and public health frameworks. One Health, a paradigm encompassing the inextricable links among human, animal, and environmental health, has emerged in response to these interconnected threats, providing a unifying framework for addressing complex health challenges through integrated, multisectoral approaches. Many One Health challenges, however, are not acute problems with clear proximate causes but delayed an

One Health Approach in Ukraine: Current Status and Prospects for Implementation.

The One Health approach is based on a systemic understanding of the interrelationship between human, animal, and environmental health. In today's world, characterized by rapid urbanization, globalization, climate change, and emerging zoonoses, the One Health concept has become critical as an interdisciplinary and multisectoral framework for ensuring biosecurity and sustainable development. This paper evaluates the status and prospects for the implementation of the One Health approach in Ukraine, a nation uniquely positioned between establishing a modern public health system and managing the pr

One Health approach on toxocariasis and ophthalmic assessment in owners and dogs.

Although toxocariasis has been considered a common and important neglected zoonotic parasitic disease worldwide, serologic ownership risk and owner-dog concomitant ophthalmic assessment remain to be fully established. Meanwhile, high toxocariasis prevalence has been recently found in seashore areas of southern Brazil. Accordingly, the present study aimed to perform owner serologic, fecal/hair dog, and owner- dog ophthalmic assessment in an endemic seashore area of southern Brazil. In overall, 112/342 (32.75%) owners were seropositive to anti-Toxocara spp. IgG antibodies by ELISA, with family i

The Role of Companion Animals as 'Sentinels' From the One Health Perspective.

Companion animals, particularly dogs and cats, are becoming essential members of modern households. They consistently share both indoor and outdoor spaces with their owners, resulting in a substantial overlap in living environments. Although public health concerns associated with companion animals receive considerable attention, their potential role as sentinel species remains underestimated. This role aligns with the One Health concept, which emphasizes the interconnection and mutual influence of human, animal and ecosystem health. In this review, we discuss the sentinel role of companion dog

Process mapping the One Health response to a rabies outbreak in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic disease outbreaks are a growing global health concern, highlighting the need for tools to strengthen outbreak responses. Process mapping is a systems thinking approach that allows the complex multilevel, multisectoral network of actors and processes involved in an outbreak response to be clearly visualised and analysed using a One Health lens. We applied process mapping to a rabies outbreak in the previously rabies-free Philippine province of Romblon to demonstrate its utility. METHODS: Key stakeholders were interviewed to inform the development of a provisional map of th

A review of epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of Mpox: The role of One Health.

Human monkeypox (Mpox) is an emerging zoonotic disease. Its clinical features are similar to but less severe than those of smallpox. The etiology of this disease is the monkeypox virus. This virus is a double-stranded DNA virus that is classified into the genus Orthopoxvirus and the family Poxviridae. Human monkeypox was first identified in 1970 and mainly occurred in Central and Western Africa. In 2022, outbreaks of Mpox virus infection occurred in several non-endemic countries and caused a potential threat to humans. It is urgent to take immediate action to control and prevent the outbreak o

A systematic review of the microbial community in taiassuids: a One Health approach.

Collared and white-lipped peccaries are sympatric and are distributed in most of South America and in the humid tropical forests of Mexico and Central America. Historically, these species have been used as a source of protein by traditional and/or indigenous human communities, but currently they have been used for legal consumption in different countries. Thus, there has been greater interaction between these wild species and domestic animals and humans, enabling microbial interactions between different niches. The present study presents a systematic review of the literature on the microbial c

Prioritization of zoonoses for multisectoral, One Health collaboration in Somalia, 2023.

BACKGROUND: The human population of Somalia is vulnerable to zoonoses due to a high reliance on animal husbandry. This disease risk is exacerbated by relatively low income (poverty) and weak state capacity for health service delivery in the country as well as climate extremes and geopolitical instability in the region. To address this threat to public health efficiently and effectively, it is essential that all sectors have a common understanding of the priority zoonotic diseases of greatest concern to the country. METHODS: Representatives from human, animal (domestic and wildlife), agricultu

Elimination of Schistosomiasis Japonica in China: From the One Health Perspective.

Schistosomiasis japonica is caused by infection of Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum), which infected 12 million residents in the 1950s in China and was a heavy burden to public health and socioeconomic development (1). After more than seven decades of effort to control schistosomiasis, the prevalence of schistosomiasis has been reduced dramatically in China. Among the 450 endemic counties (including city and district-level jurisdictions), 74.89% (337/450), 21.87% (98/450), and 3.33% (15/450) have achieved the criteria of elimination, transmission interruption, and transmission control of sc

Clostridioides difficile as a Potential Pathogen of Importance to One Health: A Review.

Clostridioides difficile (basonym Clostridium) is a bacterial enteropathogen associated with cases of C. difficile infection that can result in pseudomembranous colitis, rapid fluid loss, and death. For decades following its isolation, C. difficile was thought to be a solely nosocomial pathogen, being isolated from individuals undergoing antimicrobial therapy and largely affecting elderly populations. More recently, C. difficile spores have been identified in the broader environment, including in food-producing animals, soil, and food matrices, in both ready-to-eat foods and meat products. Fur

One Health: An Effective and Ethical Approach to Leptospirosis Control in Australia.

The increasing concerns over emerging infectious diseases and potential pandemics led to the formation of One Health, a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to address the risks from human-animal-ecosystem interactions. This multi-sectoral approach is specifically important in Australia, a biodiverse country with unique flora, fauna, and many infectious diseases, including leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is a relatively rare but potentially fatal zoonosis, with an attributed mortality of around 60,000 deaths per year worldwide. In recent years, sporadic cases and alarming outbreaks of leptos

Surveillance of foodborne parasitic diseases in Europe in a One Health approach.

In 2012, WHO/FAO ranked 24 foodborne parasites (FBP) using multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to provide risk assessors with a basis for prioritising control of highly ranked FBP on the global level. One conclusion was that ranking may differ substantially per region. In Europe, the same methodology was used to rank FBP of relevance for Europe. Of the 24 FBP, the top-five prioritised FBP were identified for Europe as Echinococcus multilocularis, Toxoplasma gondii, Trichinella spiralis, E. granulosus, and Cryptosporidium spp., all of which are zoonotic. The objective of the present study wa
