We report the generation of high-average-output-power picosecond-pulsed optical vortex beams from an all-fiberized Yb-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. A home-made broadband long-period fiber grating is employed as an in-line mode converter prior to the final power amplifier stage to efficiently convert the pre-amplified fundamental Gaussian beam into optical vortex beams with a topological charge of l=±1. The desired vortex beam is then efficiently amplified to an average output power of 170 W with a pulse duration of ~95 ps and a mode purity of ~92% at a repetition

Halide perovskites exhibit significant advantages for active optical components such as light emitting diodes, solar cells and photodetectors due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Their nonlinear optical effects and other characteristics also make them suitable for integration into waveguide components, such as optical fibers, for applications like optical modulation. Although some efforts have been made to integrate perovskite nanomaterials with optical fibers, technological challenges have hindered reliable in situ preparation methods. Herein, we propose an area-selective wetting

Light-driven microactuators show great promise in micromanipulation, but conventional free-space illumination approaches are often limited by thermal crosstalk and spatial restrictions. To address these issues, we herein present a photothermal microgripper directly integrated onto an optical fiber tip, comprising two symmetrically arranged composite microfibers. Each microfiber contains both a carbon-loaded polyethylene (CPE) core and a transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) core. Upon optical excitation via the fiber, the CPE core absorbs light and experiences pronounced thermal expansion

Measuring monoclonal proteins (M-proteins) plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of plasma cell dyscrasias. Measurements of M-proteins are mostly conducted by electrophoresis, which requires complex sample processing and takes several hours to obtain a result. In this work, IgG kappa M-protein (IgGκ) and IgG lambda M-protein (IgGλ) sensors are developed based on a long-period grating optical fiber sensor. The IgGκ sensor has a limit of detection (LoD) of 2.78 μg/mL and a selectivity of 9.73. The IgGλ sensor has an LoD of 2.75 μg/mL and a selectivity of 27.9. The sensor has su

One of the most common infectious disease-related causes of death globally, particularly in low- and middle-income nations, persists: tuberculosis. At a manifestation of globalization, causes of death keep growing. As it happens, we have developed a sensor that quickly recognizes tuberculosis. The sensor operates in the (1-2 THz) frequency band, resulting in exemplary recognition and accuracy. Our present work asserts the design and numerical analysis of a hexagonal hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) sensor for detecting tuberculosis (TB) cells adopting the finite element method (FEM)

PURPOSE: Surgical resection is the only curative option for pancreatic carcinoma, but disease-free and overall survival times after surgery are limited due to early tumor recurrence, most often originating from local microscopic tumor residues (R1 resection). The intraoperative identification of microscopic tumor residues within the resection margin in situ could improve surgical performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fiber-optic microscopy for detecting microscopic residues in vital pancreatic cancer tissues. Experimental Design. Fresh whole-mount human pancre

A reflective surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was evaluated for real-time monitoring of scale deposition. The sensor consists of an optical fiber, only 5 mm at the gold-coated tip of the sensing area. The effect of silica growth on the sensor response was evaluated using a Na2SiO3 solution. The sensitivity of the sensor to silica was 1.6 ± 0.3 nm per one immersion in the solution of 1000 mg/L (as SiO2) at 85 °C and subsequnt air drying, as indicated by the SPR peak shift. The amount of silica deposited on the gold surface was measured by the quartz crystal microbalance method, and the SP

Biomarker detection has emerged as an essential complementary approach for early-stage screening of tumors. Conventional methods are constrained by bulky systems, cumbersome operation steps, and low detection accuracy. Here, we demonstrate a dual-resonance optimally configured lossy mode resonance (LMR) immunoprobe for detecting prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a biomarker for prostate cancer (PCa). The dual-resonance structure used in this study introduces low-refractive-index magnesium fluoride (MgF2) as a matching layer before adding indium tin oxide (ITO) as a lossy mode excitation layer t

With the increasing capacity and complexity of optical fiber communication systems, both academic and industrial requirements for the essential tasks of transmission systems simulation, digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms verification, system performance evaluation, and quality of transmission (QoT) optimization are becoming significantly important. However, due to the intricate and nonlinear nature of optical fiber communication systems, these tasks are generally implemented in a divide-and-conquer manner, which necessitates a profound level of expertise and proficiency in software pro

PURPOSE: Diabetes mellitus causes diabetic keratopathy (DK). This and other ocular surface disorders are underdiagnosed and problematic for affected patients as well as recipients of diabetic donor corneas. Thus, it is important to find noninvasive means to facilitate determination of the potentially vision-threatening DK. It has been reported that diabetic corneas uptake significantly less oxygen (O2) than healthy controls. However, an integral assessment of the ocular surface is missing.
METHODS: Using an optic-fiber O2 micro-sensor (optrode) we demonstrated recently that the healthy ocular

We developed a wearable swallowing assessment device using a hetero-core fiber-optic pressure sensor for the detection of laryngeal movement during swallowing. The proposed pressure sensor (comfortably attached to the skin of the neck) demonstrated a high sensitivity of 0.592 dB/kPa and a linearity of R2 = 0.995 within a 14 kPa pressure band, which is a suitable pressure for the detection of laryngeal movement. In addition, since the fabricated hetero-core fiber-optic pressure sensor maintains appreciable sensitivity over the surface of the sensor, the proposed wearable swallowing assessment d

SIGNIFICANCE: Current methods for analyzing pathological muscle tissue are time consuming and rarely quantitative, and they involve invasive biopsies. Faster and less invasive diagnosis of muscle disease may be achievable using marker-free in vivo optical sensing methods.
AIM: It was speculated that changes in the biochemical composition and structure of muscle associated with pathology could be measured quantitatively using visible wavelength optical spectroscopy techniques enabling automated classification.
APPROACH: A fiber-optic autofluorescence (AF) and diffuse reflectance (DR) spectros

Several aids have been designed for helping anesthetist in managing the difficult airway. Oral carcinomas often distort the airway anatomy and present as difficult airway usually with restricted mouth opening. In these scenarios, elective nasotracheal intubation with fiberoptic is done to secure the airway as well as to provide the full surgical field to the surgeon. Vertically split nasopharyngeal airway is one of the popular aids used as a conduit to pass fiber-optic bronchoscope. Timely removal of the split nasopharyngeal airway is must and if missed, and pushed inside bronchus leading to i

A miniature fiber-optic tip Fabry-Perot (FP) pressure sensor with excellent high-temperature survivability, assembled by hydroxide catalysis bonding (HCB) technology, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A standard single-mode fiber is fusion spliced to a fused silica hollow tube with an outer diameter (OD) of 125 µm, and a 1-µm-thick circular silicon diaphragm with a diameter slightly larger than the OD is bonded to the other endface of the hollow tube by HCB technology. The ultrathin silicon diaphragm is prepared on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer produced by microelectromechanica
