The optic nerve pathology in magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) delineates the orbital soft tissue excellently and is a valuable diagnostic tool in optic nerve pathology. By using different imaging parameters some examples are shown of demarcation of optic nerve tumors, optic nerve inflammations and orbital diseases surrounding the optic nerve. Whereas CT appears to be superior to MRI only in the detection of calcified perioptic meningiomas, MRI provides unique visualization of optic canal and even subarachnoidal space of retrobulbar optic nerve in peculiar cases.

Magnetic resonance imaging in Leber's optic neuropathy.

Thirteen males with Leber's optic neuropathy had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, and in eight the optic nerves were imaged using STIR (Short Time Inversion Recovery) sequences. All optic nerve scans were abnormal. In seven with bilateral visual loss four showed bilateral increased optic nerve signal and three unilateral increase. The involvement was of the mid and posterior intra-orbital sections over three 5 mm slices or more with sparing of the anterior portion. One patient with unilateral visual loss had increased signal only on the affected side. Brain MRI was normal, in mar

MR imaging of optic pathways in patients with neurofibromatosis.

Twenty-one patients with documented neurofibromatosis had MR examinations to evaluate possible intracranial disease. In five cases the indication was a known or suspected optic glioma. Two patients were examined because of a history of seizures; the rest were examined as part of a baseline evaluation. Eighteen patients showed evidence of signal hyperintensity on T2-weighted images. Lesions involved the optic nerves, optic chiasm, optic tracts, lateral geniculate body, optic radiations, basal ganglia, periventricular white matter, cerebellar white matter, and dentate nucleus of the cerebellum.

Imaging biomarker for quantitative analysis of endometrial injury based on optical coherence tomography/ultrasound integrated imaging mode.

Precise evaluation of endometrial injury is significant to clinical decision-making in gynecological disease and assisted reproductive technology. However, there is a lack of assessment methods for endometrium in vivo. In this research, we intend to develop quantitative imaging markers with optical coherence tomography (OCT)/ultrasound (US) integrated imaging system through intrauterine endoscopic imaging. OCT/US integrated imaging system was established as our previous research reported. The endometrial injury model was established and after treatment, OCT/US integrated imaging and uterus bio

Retinal choroidal vessel imaging based on multi-wavelength fundus imaging with the guidance of optical coherence tomography.

A multispectral fundus camera (MSFC), as a novel noninvasive technology, uses an extensive range of monochromatic light sources that enable the view of different sectional planes of the retinal and choroidal structures. However, MSFC imaging involves complex processes affected by various factors, and the recognized theory based on light absorption above the choroid is not sufficient. In an attempt to supplement the relevant explanations, in this study, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT), a three-dimensional tomography modality, to analyze MSFC results at the retina and choroid. The swe

Non-invasive In Vivo Fluorescence Optical Imaging of Inflammatory MMP Activity Using an Activatable Fluorescent Imaging Agent.

This paper describes a non-invasive method for imaging matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-activity by an activatable fluorescent probe, via in vivo fluorescence optical imaging (OI), in two different mouse models of inflammation: a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a contact hypersensitivity reaction (CHR) model. Light with a wavelength in the near infrared (NIR) window (650 - 950 nm) allows a deeper tissue penetration and minimal signal absorption compared to wavelengths below 650 nm. The major advantages using fluorescence OI is that it is cheap, fast and easy to implement in different animal model

Near-infrared Fluorescence Optical Imaging in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Comparison to Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: Near-infrared fluorescence optical imaging (FOI) is a novel imaging technology in the detection and evaluation of different arthritides. FOI was validated in comparison to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), greyscale ultrasonography (GSUS), and power Doppler ultrasonography (PDUS) in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Hands of 31 patients with early RA were examined by FOI, MRI, and US. In each modality, synovitis of the wrist, metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP) 2-5, and proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP) 2-5 were scored on a 4-point scale (0-3). Sensitivity an

In vivo optical imaging of interscapular brown adipose tissue with (18)F-FDG via Cerenkov luminescence imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Brown adipose tissue (BAT), a specialized tissue for thermogenesis, plays important roles for metabolism and energy expenditure. Recent studies validated BAT's presence in human adults, making it an important re-emerging target for various pathologies. During this validation, PET images with (18)F-FDG showed significant uptake of (18)F-FDG by BAT under certain conditions. Here, we demonstrated that Cerenkov luminescence imaging (CLI) using (18)F-FDG could be utilized for in vivo optical imaging of BAT in mice. METHODS: Mice were injected with (18)F-FDG and imaged 60 minutes later w

Magnetic resonance imaging, magnetisation transfer imaging, and diffusion weighted imaging correlates of optic nerve, brain, and cervical cord damage in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.

OBJECTIVES: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a mitochondrial disease leading to bilateral loss of central vision and severe optic nerve atrophy. A subtype of LHON presents additional clinical and MRI aspects indistinguishable from those of multiple sclerosis (MS) (LHON-MS). In patients with LHON or LHON-MS, an assessment was made of (a) the severity of optic nerve damage, using MRI and magnetisation transfer imaging (MTI), and (b) the presence and extent of macroscopic and microscopic pathology in the brain and cervical cord, using MRI and MT ratio (MTR) and mean diffusivity (D) h

Advances in Optical and Fluorescence Imaging for Surgical Management of Thyroid Cancer.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The majority of thyroid cancer patients are diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. A complete R0 resection significantly lowers cancer recurrence risk for high-risk papillary thyroid cancer but can be difficult to achieve because tumor margins are not easily visualized. The purpose of the present narrative review is to describe current work and future directions in fluorescence-guided thyroid cancer surgery. METHODS: PubMed and Google Scholar were used to identify 45 articles that focused on fluorescence labeling and imaging of thyroid cancer published through Februar

Imaging Features of Herpetic Interstitial Keratitis by Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography.

PURPOSE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) are known causes of chronic and recurrent interstitial keratitis. Determination of active corneal inflammation is important for appropriate management. This study aimed to investigate features of clinically active herpetic interstitial keratitis (HIK) by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with active HIK (17 with HSV, 10 with VZV) and AS-OCT imaging were retrospectively identified. Five patients also had stromal scarring (SS), presumably from prior HIK episodes. An addition

Imaging of human airways by endoscope-compatible dynamic microscopic optical coherence tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Microscopy is a cornerstone for diagnostics in lung disease but was traditionally restricted to biopsies and explanted tissue. Microscopic optical coherence tomography (mOCT) produces images with microscopic resolution without the need for exogenous markers. As recently demonstrated in excised mouse tissue, the combination with dynamic contrast (dmOCT) generates high contrast images of airway tissue. DmOCT therefore has the potential to be used for virtual biopsies in humans. METHODS: To assess the potential of dmOCT combined with endoscopic imaging, we scanned excised human lun

An optical meta-image-processor for enhanced imaging through strongly scattering media.

Strongly scattering conditions are detrimental to imaging. Conventional methods rely solely on post-processing techniques to enhance the ballistic components of an obscured target to recover the image; however, they struggle in complex conditions where the ballistic components are heavily overwhelmed by scattering. In this work, we present an optical meta-image-processor (MIP) that tailors the scattered point spread function of the imaging system to enable high-quality, deep imaging through strongly scattering media. The MIP performs both Laplacian and Gaussian operations in a single device, e

Optical switchable edge-enhanced imaging by weak measurement based on the metasurface.

Edge information of images contains a variety of physical properties such as amplitude, phase, polarization, and frequency. These features usually correspond to the changes of the key structure of objects under measured. Therefore, edge imaging is of great significance in computer vision and optical detection. Here, we propose a controllable edge-enhanced imaging system with weak measurement, utilizing a Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurface to achieve weak coupling between light and object. By setting the proper pre-selection state and post-selection state, high-contrast edge images are succes

Nanoprobe-Based Near-Infrared II Optical Imaging for Guiding Precision Glioma Therapy.

Glioma is a heterogeneous primary and metastatic tumour of the central nervous system that is highly invasive and destructive, with a poor prognosis and low survival rate. Near-infrared II (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging has revealed significant potential for advancing glioma diagnosis because of its non-invasiveness, high spatiotemporal resolution, reasonable sensitivity, and deep penetration. These imaging techniques have been widely used to guide real-time glioma treatment with high accuracy and efficiency. This review summarised the applications and progress of NIR-II in guiding glioma surge

Harnessing forward multiple scattering for optical imaging deep inside an opaque medium.

As light travels through a disordered medium such as biological tissues, it undergoes multiple scattering events. This phenomenon is detrimental to in-depth optical microscopy, as it causes a drastic degradation of contrast, resolution and brightness of the resulting image beyond a few scattering mean free paths. However, the information about the inner reflectivity of the sample is not lost; only scrambled. To recover this information, a matrix approach of optical imaging can be fruitful. Here, we report on a de-scanned measurement of a high-dimension reflection matrix R via low coherence int

Differentiation of Tumors of the Upper Respiratory Tract Using Optical Metabolic Imaging.

OBJECTIVES: With over 184,000 new cases and more than 99,000 deaths per year, malignancies of the larynx are a global health problem. Currently, a dedicated screening method enabling a direct onsite diagnosis is missing. This can lead to delayed diagnosis and worse outcomes of the patients. An endoscopic optical method enabling a direct distinction between healthy tissue, dysplastic tissue and cancerous tissue would be an ideal tool for the detection of tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT). Healthy and tumor cells differ significantly in their metabolic state due to the different met
