Fetal magnetocardiographic recordings with a prototype bed-based array system of optically-pumped magnetometers.

OBJECTIVE: To record and extract features of fetal cardiac activities with a semi-rigid prototype optically-pumped magnetometers (OPM) sensor array. METHODS: Fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) data were collected from 15 pregnant women between 28 and 40 weeks gestation. Mothers were lying flat in a customized bed with sensors touching their abdomen from below using a prototype grid. fMCG was extracted to perform standard fetal heart rate variability (FHRV) analysis. RESULTS: fMCG was observed in 13 of the 15 pregnant women. OPM FHRV indicators were in the range of previous SQUID studies. CONC

High-resolution OCT balloon imaging catheter with astigmatism correction.

We report new optics designs for an optical coherence tomography (OCT) balloon imaging catheter to achieve diffraction-limited high resolution at a large working distance and enable the correction of severe astigmatism in the catheter. The designs employed a 1 mm diameter gradient-index lens of a properly chosen pitch number and a glass rod spacer to fully utilize the available NA of the miniature optics. Astigmatism caused by the balloon tubing was analyzed, and a method based on a cylindrical reflector was proposed and demonstrated to compensate the astigmatism. A catheter based on the new d

In vivo measurement of age-related stiffening in the crystalline lens by Brillouin optical microscopy.

The biophysical and biomechanical properties of the crystalline lens (e.g., viscoelasticity) have long been implicated in accommodation and vision problems, such as presbyopia and cataracts. However, it has been difficult to measure such parameters noninvasively. Here, we used in vivo Brillouin optical microscopy to characterize material acoustic properties at GHz frequency and measure the longitudinal elastic moduli of lenses. We obtained three-dimensional elasticity maps of the lenses in live mice, which showed biomechanical heterogeneity in the cortex and nucleus of the lens with high spati

Deformation Response of the Human Lamina Cribrosa to Intracranial Pressure Lowering.

The optic nerve head (ONH) is subjected to both intra-ocular pressure (IOP) and intracranial pressure (ICP). The translaminar pressure difference (TLPD) is defined as the difference between IOP and ICP. A change in TLPD, whether from changes in IOP or ICP, could subject the lamina cribrosa (LC) to altered deformation, potentially damaging the axons, activating the mechanosensitive glial cells, and promoting remodeling of the connective tissue structures in the ONH. In this study, we applied spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and digital volume correlation (DVC) to calculate

[Patient selection for multifocal intraocular lenses].

Patient selection is the key to patient satisfaction with multifocal intraocular lenses (mIOLs). While multifocality provides spectacle independence, it is associated with potentially bothersome side effects inherent in multifocal optics. Photic phenomena such as halos and glare, as well as loss of contrast in low light environments, can be potentially problematic in visually demanding occupations and leisure activities. The use of mIOLs may also be disadvantageous in patients with certain comorbidities that affect vision or increase the risk of complications. In addition, unilateral mIOL impl

Superadditive effects of multiple lesions in a connectionist architecture: implications for the neuropsychology of optic aphasia.

Neuropsychological disorders have traditionally been understood in terms of a focal lesion to a single component of a cognitive architecture. Optic aphasia (OA) defies explanation in this way. In OA, naming of visual stimuli is impaired in the absence of general visual agnosia or anomia. OA has been explained by positing multiple semantic systems or multiple functional pathways to visual naming. M. J. Farah (1990) instead sketched a parsimonious account based on multiple lesions--to pathways mapping visual input to semantic and semantics to naming responses--and the assumption that the effects

Four-dimensional imaging of murine subpleural alveoli using high-speed optical coherence tomography.

The investigation of lung dynamics on alveolar scale is crucial for the understanding and treatment of lung diseases, such as acute lung injury and ventilator induced lung injury, and to promote the development of protective ventilation strategies. One approach to this is the establishment of numerical simulations of lung tissue mechanics where detailed knowledge about three-dimensional alveolar structure changes during the ventilation cycle is required. We suggest four-dimensional optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging as a promising modality for visualizing the structural dynamics of sin

Ocular hypertension as a cause of cilioretinal artery obstruction in the young patient, about a case.

A 16-year-old patient seen in the Emergency Department due to loss of visual acuity (VA) in the left eye (LE), and oppressive headache of 1 day onset. The patient was on treatment with topical corticosteroids for viral conjunctivitis. The VA was 1.00 in the right eye and 0.05 in LE. The intraocular pressure was 42mmHg in both eyes. In the LE, the funduscopy revealed retinal ischaemic oedema in the papillomacular bundle. The optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) showed an obstruction of the cilioretinal artery. The systemic study was normal, the cardiac and supra-aortic trunks ultras

[Analysis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy in sarcoidosis with transesophageal ultrasonic endoscopy; influences on cardiovascular system].

We studied influences of mediastinal lymphadenopathy on cardiovascular system in nine cases of sarcoidosis with transesophageal ultrasonic endoscopy. Chest x-ray films revealed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy in all cases, whose diagnoses were made histologically with biopsies of peripheral lung through flexible fiber optic bronchoscope and/or of lymph nodes. These findings were typical in this disease. Many compartments of cardiovascular system in mediastinal and hilar regions were visible with this technique in all subjects. And enlarged lymph nodes changed dimensions in these compartments,

Mesoporous persistent nanophosphors for in vivo optical bioimaging and drug-delivery.

Based upon the ambitious idea that one single particle could serve multiple purposes at the same time, the combination and simultaneous use of imaging and therapeutics has lately arisen as one of the most promising prospects among nanotechnologies directed toward biomedical applications. Intended for both therapeutics and diagnostics in vivo, highly complex nanostructures were specifically designed to simultaneously act as optical imaging probes and delivery vehicles. Yet, such multifunctional photonic nanoplatforms usually exploit fluorescence phenomena which require constant excitation light

Selective adhesion, lipid exchange and membrane-fusion processes between vesicles of various sizes bearing complementary molecular recognition groups.

Equimolar mixtures of large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) obtained from mixtures of egg lecithin and lipids containing complementary hydrogen bonding head groups (barbituric acid (BAR) and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP)) were shown to aggregate and fuse. These events have been studied in detail using electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, and by fluorimetry using membrane or water-soluble fluorescence probes. It was shown that aggregation was followed by two competitive processes: a) lipid mixing leading to redispersion of the vesicles; b) fusion events generating much larger vesicles

Treadmill experience alters treadmill effects on perceived visual motion.

Information on ongoing body movements can affect the perception of ambiguous visual motion. Previous studies on "treadmill capture" have shown that treadmill walking biases the perception of ambiguous apparent motion in backward direction in accordance with the optic flow during normal walking, and that long-term treadmill experience changes the effect of treadmill capture. To understand the underlying mechanisms for these phenomena, we conducted Experiment 1 with non-treadmill runners and Experiment 2 with treadmill runners. The participants judged the motion direction of the apparent motion

[Clinical manifestations of thyroid ophthalmopathy].

Ophthalmopathy is a common manifestation of autoimmune thyroid disease. Periorbital swelling, eyelid lag, exophthalmos, and impaired vision may occur. From 25% to 50% of patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism will have some features of ophthalmopathy. All of the clinically significant eye symptoms and findings among patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy can be traced to one of two phenomena: swelling in the retrobulbar space due to deposition of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) or restriction of extraocular muscle motion, which is attributed to initial swelling and later fibrosis. Patients with Graves'

Vision and cognition in the natural philosophy of Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus).

Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus, ca. 1197-1280) descended from a nobleman's family in Upper Suebia and studied natural philosophy and theology at the University of Padova, where he joined the Dominican order. Confronted with Aristotelian thought mainly in its Arabic modification (Avicenna, Al-Farabi, Averroes, Alhazen, Costa ben Luca and others) from his days in Padova, he elaborated in several books on the principles of natural philosophy, biology, brain and sense functions and psychology in addition to his theological and exegetic works. His observations and concepts on vision are discusse

Topological Transitions at Optical Interfaces Near Reflection Singularities.

Topological transitions of structured light at optical interfaces, particularly near singularities in reflection coefficients, hold significant potential for advanced light field manipulation. However, these phenomena remain largely unexplored beyond classical Brewster-angle configurations. In this work, we establish a unified theoretical framework to describe topological transitions-from an ideal vortex to a deformed off-axis vortex-near reflection singularities and provide experimental validation of the predictions. Through a full-wave model, we demonstrate that the transition is governed by

Valley-Engineered Landau Polaritons in a van der Waals Semiconductor Microcavity.

The interaction of light with correlated quantum matter in two-dimensional (2D) materials offers a powerful platform for exploring emergent quantum phenomena. Here, we report the realization of Landau polaritons in a monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe_{2}) integrated into an optical microcavity. By embedding a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the monolayer and applying a perpendicular magnetic field, we achieve strong coupling between cavity photons and interband Landau level (LL) transitions, giving rise to hybrid light-matter quasiparticles. These Landau polaritons exhibit valley-depen

Conundrums of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensors.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensing offers label-free, real-time detection of biomolecular interactions with high sensitivity and compact instrumentation. However, despite widespread use, several persistent and poorly understood phenomena limit the reproducibility, quantitation, and interpretability of LSPR signals. This perspective examines six recurring "conundrums" in LSPR biosensing, with a focus on their physical origins, experimental manifestations, and current approaches to mitigation. I review puzzling cases where analyte binding induces either red or blueshifts of th

Room temperature collective blinking and photon bunching from CsPbBr3 quantum dot superlattice.

Development of quantum systems supporting collective many-body states is crucial for advancement of quantum technologies, and perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising quantum light sources. However, photon bunching, a key signature of collective states, has been observed in perovskites only at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we report collective blinking and photon bunching in perovskite QD superlattices at room temperature. Sub-wavelength-sized CsPbBr3 superlattices exhibit distinct two-level blinking, and demonstrate photon bunching with a degree of up to 3.9. Time-resolved phot

[Diseases of the vitreoretinal interface : What role does the vitreous body play?].

Once viewed as an inert transparent medium with no pathophysiological importance, the vitreous body is now recognized as a dynamic, cell-regulated compartment with structural, mechanical, biological and immunological functions closely interacting with the retina. Hyalocytes, structural and cellular changes of the vitreous body and the vitreoretinal interface are central to many retinal diseases. Hyalocytes regulate the extracellular matrix and immune response and in cases of dysregulation promote proliferative processes. Structural phenomena, such as vitreoschisis and vitreous cortex remnants

Manipulation of the Topological Ferromagnetic State in a Weyl Semimetal by Spin-Orbit Torque.

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (MWSMs) exhibit unconventional transport phenomena, such as large anomalous Hall (and Nernst) effects, which are absent in spatial inversion asymmetry WSMs. Compared with its nonmagnetic counterpart, the magnetic state of a MWSM provides an alternative way for the modulation of topology. Spin-orbit torque (SOT), as an effective means of electrically controlling the magnetic states of ferromagnets, may be used to manipulate the topological magnetic states of MWSMs. Here we confirm the MWSM state of high-quality Co2MnGa film by systematically investigating the transport
