Exposure of a volatile organic vapour could set in powerful rotational motion a microdroplet composed of an aqueous salt solution loaded with metal nanoparticles. The solutal Marangoni motion on the surface originating from the sharp difference in the surface tension of water and organic vapour stimulated the strong vortices inside the droplet. The vapour sources of methanol, ethanol, diethyl ether, toluene, and chloroform stimulated motions of different magnitudes could easily be correlated to the surface tension gradient on the drop surface. Interestingly, when the nanoparticle laden droplet

Self-propelled motion, emerging spontaneously or in response to external cues, is a hallmark of living organisms. Systems of self-propelled synthetic particles are also relevant for multiple applications, from targeted drug delivery to the design of self-healing materials. Self-propulsion relies on the force transfer to the surrounding. While self-propelled swimming in the bulk of liquids is fairly well characterized, many open questions remain in our understanding of self-propelled motion along substrates, such as in the case of crawling cells or related biomimetic objects. How is the force t

The neuronal and genetic bases of sleep, a phenomenon considered crucial for well-being of organisms, has been under investigation using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster Although sleep is a state where sensory threshold for arousal is greater, it is known that certain kinds of repetitive sensory stimuli, such as rocking, can indeed promote sleep in humans. Here we report that orbital motion-aided mechanosensory stimulation promotes sleep of male and female Drosophila, independent of the circadian clock, but controlled by the homeostatic system. Mechanosensory receptor nanchung (Nan)-

Medical image segmentation is an important technique for analyzing medical imaging data and supporting clinical decision-making. However, existing methods still face challenges in boundary delineation due to non-rigid anatomical deformation caused by respiratory motion and organ displacement, as well as the loss of fine details during hierarchical feature extraction. To address these issues, we propose a multi-scale connectivity-edge pixel-level attention network (MCEPANet). Specifically, we introduce a statistical pixel-level connectivity extraction algorithm to characterize anatomical topolo

Controlling the collective motion of epithelial cell populations is fundamental for understanding multicellular self-organization and for advancing tissue engineering. Under spatial confinement, cells are known to exhibit either vortex rotation or oscillatory motion depending on boundary geometry, but the mechanisms governing transitions between these states remain unclear. Here, we investigate the collective motion of MDCK cells confined within a doublet circular boundary, where the confinement aspect ratio, defined as the distance between the centers of two circles relative to their radius,

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are abnormal growths of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas. Different from the brain in the skull, the pancreas in the abdomen can be largely deformed by the body posture and the surrounding organs. In consequence, both tumor growth and pancreatic motion attribute to the tumor shape difference observable from images. As images at different time points are used to personalize the tumor growth model, the prediction accuracy may be reduced if such motion is ignored. Therefore, we incorporate the image-derived pancreatic motion to tumor growth personalization.

The organization of the plasma membrane is both highly complex and highly dynamic. One manifestation of this dynamic complexity is the lateral mobility of proteins within the plane of the membrane, which is often an important determinant of intermolecular protein-binding interactions, downstream signal transduction, and local membrane mechanics. The mode of membrane protein mobility can range from random Brownian motion to immobility and from confined or restricted motion to actively directed motion. Several methods can be used to distinguish among the various modes of protein mobility, includ

Exertional dyspnea can be a manifestation of dysfunction in a variety of organ systems. Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), a condition previously known as vocal cord dysfunction and paradoxic vocal fold motion, is defined as inappropriate, reversible narrowing of the larynx during vigorous exercise. EILO is usually characterized by typical symptoms, which nevertheless frequently are confused with those of other conditions, including asthma. Laryngoscopy performed as symptoms evolve from rest to peak exercise is pivotal in patient work-up. Moving forward, laryngoscopy findings that

To study the cortical mechanism of figure/ground categorization in the human brain, we employed fMRI and the temporal-asynchrony paradigm. This paradigm is able to eliminate any differential activation for local stimulus features, and thus to identify only global perceptual interactions. Strong segmentation of the image into different spatial configurations was generated solely from temporal asynchronies between zones of homogeneous dynamic noise. The figure/ground configuration was a single geometric figure enclosed in a larger surround region. In a control condition, the figure/ground organi

Intravital microscopy has been recognized for its ability to make physiological measurements at cellular and subcellular levels while maintaining the complex natural microenvironment. Two-photon microscopy (TPM), using longer wavelengths than single-photon excitation, has extended intravital imaging deeper into tissues, with minimal phototoxicity. However, due to a relatively slow acquisition rate, TPM is especially sensitive to motion artifact, which presents a challenge when imaging tissues subject to respiratory and cardiac movement. Thoracoabdominal organs that cannot be exteriorized or im

Although PET/CT scanners have the potential for precise fused registration of structures visualized on both PET and CT, physiological motion during the acquisition of both studies may alter the appearance of organ shape, size or location. The degree of possible mismatch in abdominal organ size and position between PET and CT has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to assess the consistency in location and measured size of upper abdominal organs with PET and CT using a combined PET/CT system. Forty-six consecutive inpatients who underwent clinical PET/CT scans for suspected cancer wer

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy treatment planning (RTP) using MR has been used increasingly for the abdominal site. Multiple contrast weightings and motion-resolved imaging are desired for accurate delineation of the target and various organs-at-risk and patient-tailored planning. Current MR protocols achieve these through multiple scans with distinct contrast and variable respiratory motion management strategies and acquisition parameters, leading to a complex and inaccurate planning process. This study presents a standalone MR Multitasking (MT)-based technique to produce volumetric, motion-resolved,

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnosis and treatment depended heavily on the motion analysis of the human joints. Although the dynamic joint space (DJS) of other organs was widely used in academic investigations, they were not universally used in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) field, which was also important for the motion evaluation of the TMJ. The objectives of this study are to introduce the DJS of the TMJ and characterize the DJS regulars of mandibular movements.
METHODS: Ten asymptomatic subjects were selected to instruct this application. The mouth opening and closing, mandibular protrusion,

The effects of TTS-scopolamine, dimenhydrinate, lidocaine, and tocainide on motion sickness and vertigo and on caloric and postrotatory nystagmus were evaluated in healthy volunteers. TTS-scopolamine was administered transdermally (delivering approximately 10 micrograms X h-1 scopolamine base) and 100 mg dimenhydrinate orally. Lidocaine and tocainide were administered intravenously (average plasma concentration of lidocaine 6 mol X L-1 and of tocainide 20 mol X L-1). TTS-scopolamine and dimenhydrinate significantly reduced vertigo induced by calorization of the ears, nausea provoked with Corio

BACKGROUND: Dynamic imaging holds great potential in the diagnosis and comprehensive evaluation of different diseases by capturing mechanical and dynamic characteristics of moving organs. Nonetheless, motion artifacts notably impair image quality, hindering accurate and localized analysis-particularly in free-breathing scenarios. In preclinical studies, traditional methods often necessitate artificial breathing control or use invasive techniques that do not permit functional lung assessment under normal physiological conditions, potentially biasing results and restricting longitudinal studies.

Investigating the dynamics of chromatin loci and the factors that influence them provides valuable insights into the organization and functionality of the genome within the cell nucleus. We control the expression of Lamin-A, an important organizer of chromatin and nuclear structure. By simultaneously tracking hundreds of telomeres in Lamin-A knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) nuclei, we find that telomere motion in Lamin-A-depleted cells is both faster and more directed on micrometer scales, comparable to the size of chromosome territories. In contrast, telomere trajectories in WT cells exhibit
