Thresholds for human perception of roll tilt motion: patterns of variability based on visual, vestibular, and mixed cues.

HYPOTHESIS: Visual and vestibular cues provide complementary information about spatial orientation. BACKGROUND: A previous study we performed showed that visual and vestibular cues are fused when the brain judges the roll-tilt direction. However, it was unclear if the motion perception threshold measured in visual-vestibular conditions will be better than visual or vestibular thresholds at high frequencies. METHODS: An innovative method of vestibular evaluation, the measurement of vestibular thresholds, was used. We used a Moog mobile platform with dedicated software. Four subjects were test

Getting oriented: Redefining attention deficits in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) may affect not only motor functions, but also cognitive processes such as attention. While past research has examined PD impact on spatial attention, it has not addressed how the key functions of attentional orienting and alerting in PD are mediated by cueing format, an ecologically relevant parameter. We assessed how exogenous and endogenous orienting cue modes affect PD patients' visuospatial attention expressed as dorsal attention network orienting benefits, ventral attention network reorienting costs, and alerting abilities. METHOD: Ninety PD patients a

Three-dimensional precise orientation of bilateral auricular trial prosthesis using a facebow for a young adult with Crouzon syndrome.

Facial deformity can be debilitating, especially in the psychological and cosmetic aspects. Although surgical correction or replacement of deformed or missing parts is the ideal treatment, prosthetic replacement serves the purpose in case of surgical limitations. Prosthetic rehabilitation of a missing auricle is an acceptable option as it provides better control over the tortuous anatomical shape and shade of the missing portion. Improper spatial orientation of the prosthetic ear on the face can damage the results of even the most aesthetic prosthesis. This case report describes a simple and i

Three-dimensional versus two-dimensional endoscopes in anatomical orientation of the middle ear and in simulated surgical tasks.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional endoscopes provide a stereoscopic view of the operating field, facilitating depth perception compared to two-dimensional systems, but are not yet widely accepted. Existing research addresses performance and preference, but there are no studies that quantify anatomical orientation in endoscopic ear surgery. METHODS: Participants (n = 70) were randomised in starting with either the two-dimensional or three-dimensional endoscope system to perform one of two tasks: anatomical orientation using a labelled three-dimensional printed silicone model of the middle ear, or

Situation Model for Situation-Aware Assistance of Dementia Patients in Outdoor Mobility.

BACKGROUND: Dementia impairs spatial orientation and route planning, thus often affecting the patient's ability to move outdoors and maintain social activities. Situation-aware deliberative assistive technology devices (ATD) can substitute impaired cognitive function in order to maintain one's level of social activity. To build such a system, one needs domain knowledge about the patient's situation and needs. We call this collection of knowledge situation model. OBJECTIVE: To construct a situation model for the outdoor mobility of people with dementia (PwD). The model serves two purposes: 1)

Joint representation of translational and rotational components of optic flow in parietal cortex.

Terrestrial navigation naturally involves translations within the horizontal plane and eye rotations about a vertical (yaw) axis to track and fixate targets of interest. Neurons in the macaque ventral intraparietal (VIP) area are known to represent heading (the direction of self-translation) from optic flow in a manner that is tolerant to rotational visual cues generated during pursuit eye movements. Previous studies have also reported that eye rotations modulate the response gain of heading tuning curves in VIP neurons. We tested the hypothesis that VIP neurons simultaneously represent both h

Search performance is better predicted by tileability than presence of a unique basic feature.

Traditional models of visual search such as feature integration theory (FIT; Treisman & Gelade, 1980), have suggested that a key factor determining task difficulty consists of whether or not the search target contains a "basic feature" not found in the other display items (distractors). Here we discriminate between such traditional models and our recent texture tiling model (TTM) of search (Rosenholtz, Huang, Raj, Balas, & Ilie, 2012b), by designing new experiments that directly pit these models against each other. Doing so is nontrivial, for two reasons. First, the visual representation in TT

Rehabilitation procedures in the management of postural orientation deficits in patients with poststroke pusher behavior: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Pusher behavior (PB) is a little-known postural control disorder characterized by alterations in the perception of body orientation in the coronal (roll) plane. Poststroke PB poses many short- and long-term concerns in clinical practice leading to the longer length of hospital stay and slower functional recovery. The literature on specific rehabilitation training in PB is scant. The aim of this pilot study was to compare the outcomes after postural orientation training using visual and somatosensory cues versus conventional physiotherapy in patients with poststroke PB. METHODS: Si

Regional variation in the inversion effect for faces: differential effects for feature shape, feature configuration, and external contour.

Faces are perceived via an orientation-dependent expert mechanism. We previously showed that inversion impaired perception of the spatial relations of features more in the lower face than in the (more salient) upper face, suggests a failure to rapidly process this type of structural data from the entire face. In this study we wished to determine if this interaction between inversion and regional salience, which we consider a marker for efficient whole-face processing, was specific to second-order (coordinate) spatial relations or also affected other types of structural information in faces. We

Tactile roughness discrimination of the finger pad relies primarily on vibration sensitive afferents not necessarily located in the hand.

This study aims to investigate the relative contribution of remote mechanoreceptors to perception of roughness and spatial acuity. We examined two unilateral pathological conditions affecting differently innervation of the index finger: unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (n=12) and surgically repaired complete traumatic median nerve section at the wrist following surgical repair (n=4). We employed a control condition consisting of ring-block anesthesia of the entire index in 10 healthy subjects to model pathological denervation of the fingertip. The link between reading ability and visual spatial attention across development.

Interacting with a cluttered and dynamic environment requires making decisions about visual information at relevant locations while ignoring irrelevant locations. Typical adults can do this with covert spatial attention: prioritizing particular visual field locations even without moving the eyes. Deficits of covert spatial attention have been implicated in developmental dyslexia, a specific reading disability. Previous studies of children with dyslexia, however, have been complicated by group differences in overall task ability that are difficult to distinguish from selective spatial attention

Attentional orienting towards emotion: P2 and N400 ERP effects.

Attention can be oriented to different spatial locations yielding faster processing of attended compared to unattended stimuli. Similarly attention can be oriented to a semantic category such as "animals" or "tools". Words from the attended category will also be recognized faster than words from an unattended category. Here, we asked whether it is possible to orient attention to an emotional category, for example, "negative emotional stimuli". Furthermore, we investigated which mechanisms facilitate processing of attended stimuli. In an attentional orienting paradigm in which cues are informat

Effect of sensorial stimulations on postural disturbances related to spatial cognition disorders after stroke.

Balance disorders related to disturbances in perception of spatial reference systems are common especially after right hemispheric stroke. Mental misrepresentation of bodily orientation in space is then often superimposed upon other factors affecting imbalance such as motor and sensory impairments. Traditional rehabilitation for balance recovery has not been specifically designed to improve balance disorders related to spatial cognition. The traditional approach, consisting of stimulating the conscious perception of body orientation in space, is demanding and laborious. The approach based on s

Neural substrates of spatial and temporal disorientation in Alzheimer's disease.

To examine the neuroanatomical correlates of spatial and temporal disorientation in Alzheimer's disease (AD), we performed an anterograde clinicopathological study of 29 patients with clinically and neuropathologically confirmed AD. Spatial and temporal disorientation was assessed using the locational orientation subtests of the Mini Mental State Examination and the Benton's test for temporal orientation. Quantitative analysis of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques were performed in the CA1 field of the hippocampus, layers II and V of the entorhinal cortex, and layers II-III and V-VI of

The population percentile allowance method for determining systematic spatial error tolerances for temporary intensity modulated brachytherapy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple approaches are under development for delivering temporary intensity modulated brachytherapy (IMBT) using partially shielded applicators wherein the delivered dose distributions are sensitive to spatial uncertainties in both the applicator position and shield orientation, rather than only applicator position as with conventional high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT). Sensitivity analyses to spatial uncertainties have been reported as components of publications on these emerging technologies, however, a generalized framework for the rigorous determination of the spatial unce

Application of a cephalometric method to the temporomandibular joint in patients with or without alteration in the orientation of the mandibular condyle axis.

In a prior study, the spatial relationship of the mandibular condyle was studied through a cephalogram based on laminographies of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The present method was developed with the aim of analyzing TMJ morphology and the spatial relationship of the mandibular head within the mandibular fossa, considering references far from these structures, as they may suffer shape alterations. This study was conducted in view of the importance of the study of morphology and the hard structures relationship, which constitutes the temporomandibular joint. Its purpose is to validate a

Craniofacial orientation and parietal bone morphology in adult modern humans.

In adult humans, the orbits vary mostly in their orientation in relation to the frontal bone profile, while the orientation of the cranial base and face are associated with the anteroposterior dimensions of the parietal bone. Here we investigate the effect of parietal bone length on the orientation of the orbits, addressing craniofacial integration and head orientation. We applied shape analysis to a sample of computed tomography scans from 30 adult modern humans, capturing the outlines of the parietal and frontal bones, the orbits, and the lateral and midline cranial base, to investigate shap

Motion sickness induced by off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR).

We tested the hypothesis that motion sickness is produced by an integration of the disparity between eye velocity and the yaw-axis orientation vector of velocity storage. Disparity was defined as the magnitude of the cross product between these two vectors. OVAR, which is known to produce motion sickness, generates horizontal eye velocity with a bias level related to velocity storage, as well as cyclic modulations due to re-orientation of the head re gravity. On average, the orientation vector is close to the spatial vertical. Thus, disparity can be related to the bias and tilt angle. Motion s

Differential white matter involvement associated with distinct visuospatial deficits after right hemisphere stroke.

Visuospatial attention depends on the integration of multiple processes, and people with right hemisphere lesions after a stroke may exhibit severe or no visuospatial deficits. The anatomy of core components of visuospatial attention is an area of intense interest. Here we examine the relationship between the disruption of core components of attention and lesion distribution in a heterogeneous group (N = 70) of patients with right hemisphere strokes regardless of the presence of clinical neglect. Deficits of lateralized spatial orienting, measured as the difference in reaction times for respon

Handling Different Spatial Resolutions in Image Fusion by Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares for Incomplete Image Multisets.

Data fusion of different imaging techniques allows a comprehensive description of chemical and biological systems. Yet, joining images acquired with different spectroscopic platforms is complex because of the different sample orientation and image spatial resolution. Whereas matching sample orientation is often solved by performing suitable affine transformations of rotation, translation, and scaling among images, the main difficulty in image fusion is preserving the spatial detail of the highest spatial resolution image during multitechnique image analysis. In this work, a special variant of
