Functional asymmetry estimated by measurements of otolith in fish.

It is widely accepted that the incidence of space adaptation syndrome (SAS) is due to a mismatch of sensory information from various receptors to the central nervous system. We investigated the functional asymmetry of vestibular organ, which may caused sensory conflict in space, by measuring the weight difference of otolith between left and right side in goldfish and carp. In the goldfish utricular otolith, the maximum difference was 0.8 mg and the mean difference was 0.091 mg. The percentage of weight difference to the heavier otolith was calculated. The maximum difference was 20.57% and the

Unilateral centrifugation of the otoliths as a new method to determine bilateral asymmetries of the otolith apparatus in man.

Ten healthy subjects were eccentrically rotated with constant speed on a Barany chair. Setting of a luminous line (LL) to the subjective vertical and ocular counter-roll (OCR) were evaluated. During eccentric position rotation subjects consistently reported illusory rotation and set the LL to an angle correlating to centrifugal force. At the same time an OCR of opposite direction was measured. In one patient, labyrinthectomized on the right side, only counterclockwise rotation of the luminous line was observed. Differences between "inner" and "outer" eye were evident for luminous line settings

Genes, manganese, and zinc in formation of otoconia: labeling, recovery, and maternal effects.

Published studies indicate that genes and dietary manganese deficiency cause vestibular defects and ataxic behaviors. Manganese deficiency during development causes otoconial defects in mice, rats, guinea pigs, and chicks. Mutant genes cause otoconial defects in mice, mink, and poultry. Manganese supplementation prevents the otoconial defects in some mutant mice and mink. Manganese is essential, before crystallization of the otoconia, for synthesis of mucopolysaccharides and otoconial matrix. Such defects can be induced, after otoconia are crystallized during fetal development, by dietary zinc

From a conventional maneuver to a mechanical repositioning procedure for torsional-vertical down beating positioning nystagmus based on numerical simulations.

PURPOSE: To explore, using numerical simulations, the biomechanical behavior of otoconia during the Garaycochea maneuver in torsional-vertical down-beating positioning nystagmus (TVP-DBNy) associated with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and to propose a modified maneuver designed for execution under controlled conditions compatible with a mechanical-repositioning-chair (MRC). METHODS: A high-resolution three-dimensional micro-computed tomography (μCT) reconstruction of a human membranous labyrinth was used to simulate TVP-DBNyrelated conditions. The main clinical scenarios produc

Semicircular Canals Input Can Modify the Fast-Phase Nystagmus in Off-Vertical Axis Rotation of Mice.

Vestibular research is essential for understanding and treating disorders such as vertigo and Meniere's disease. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a key method for assessing vestibular function and an essential tool for diagnosing vertigo. Traditionally, the VOR comprises angular VOR (aVOR) and translational VOR (tVOR), which originate from the vestibular semicircular canals (SCCs) and otolith organs, respectively. VOR consists of both fast-phase and slow-phase eye movements, which functionally interact to contribute to gaze control. However, to calculate the gain and phase parameters of th

Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials findings in individuals with motion sickness susceptibility.

BackgroundMotion sickness (MS) is a clinical condition that causes autonomic symptoms as a result of a mismatch in sensory inputs with unusual body and environmental movements. Although the cause of MS is not clearly established, one widely accepted theory is otolith asymmetry and canal-otolith conflict. Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (mVEMPs) are short latency inhibitory potentials recorded from the bilateral masseter muscle in response to bilateral or unilateral galvanic/acoustic stimuli. Studies have shown that mVEMP evaluates the integrity of the vestibulo-trigeminal path

Selenium and mercury in freshwater fish muscle tissue and otoliths: a comparative analysis.

Evaluating potential ecological and human health risks of exposure to bioaccumulative trace elements is typically implemented using analysis of tissue samples. Increasingly, the microchemistry of fish calcified structures is used to elucidate the lifetime exposure to trace elements. In the present study, we measured total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and selenium (Se) in muscle tissue and otolith samples from 12 species of fish collected at reference sites and locations influenced by power plant wastewater. Muscle tissue concentrations of Se were sensitive to recent wastewater exposure

The Subjective Visual Vertical and the Subjective Haptic Vertical Access Different Gravity Estimates.

The subjective visual vertical (SVV) and the subjective haptic vertical (SHV) both claim to probe the underlying perception of gravity. However, when the body is roll tilted these two measures evoke different patterns of errors with SVV generally becoming biased towards the body (A-effect, named for its discoverer, Hermann Rudolph Aubert) and SHV remaining accurate or becoming biased away from the body (E-effect, short for Entgegengesetzt-effect, meaning "opposite", i.e., opposite to the A-effect). We compared the two methods in a series of five experiments and provide evidence that the two me

Vertigo during the Epley maneuver and success rate in patients with BPPV.

To investigate whether reported vertigo during the Epley maneuver predicts therapeutic success in patients with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo of the posterior semicircular canal (pc-BPPV). Fifty consecutive adult patients with pc-BPPV, based on a positive Dix-Hallpike test (DHT), were treated with the Epley maneuver and retested after 2 days. Patients were asked to report the presence of vertigo upon assuming each of the four positions of the maneuver. Thirty seven patients (74 %) were treated successfully in one session. Twenty out of 23 patients who reported vertigo at turning the he

Adaptation to motion sickness from torso rotation affects symptoms from supine head nodding.

INTRODUCTION: Space motion sickness affects more than 50% of astronauts. Adaptation to one kind of nauseogenic motion can affect the response to another. We hypothesized that repeated exposure to torso rotation (TR) would diminish motion sickness (MS) due to supine head nodding (HN), a ground-based analogue for space sickness. METHODS: During TR, standing subjects swept their gaze back and forth between two targets located 135 degrees to either side of straight ahead. For HN, the subject lay supine on a platform with his/her head and neck hanging over the edge. The head was pitched back and f

Gravity related research with fishes--perspectives in regard to the upcoming International Space Station, ISS.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On this background, it is still an open question to which extent altered gravity such as hypergravity (centrifuge) or microgravity (spaceflight) affects the normal individual development, either on the systemic level of the whole organism or on the level of individual organs or even single cells. The present review provides information on these questions, comprising gravistimulated effe

Primary neurotransmitters and regulatory substances onto vestibular nucleus neurons.

This review article focused on the primary neurotransmitters involved in transmission from the otolith to the vestibular nucleus (VN), especially in relation to the neurotransmission to the VN neurons (gravity-sensitive neurons) activated by tilt stimulation. The medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurons were classified in 8 types (alpha-theta) according to the patterns in response to the clockwise and counterclockwise tilt-stimulations. The tilt-induced firing was inhibited by GDEE (a non-selective glutamate receptor antagonist) and/or atropine (a muscarinic receptor antagonist). Thus, glutamat

On the origin of interindividual susceptibility to motion sickness.

According to the otolith asymmetry hypothesis for susceptibility to motion sickness, the interlabyrinthine asymmetry in the otoconial mass, which is normally compensated in the circuity of the vestibular system by appropriate neuronal weighting, becomes disrupted as a result of unfamiliar movement patterns or force environments. Measurements in various species have demonstrated a large scatter in the otoconial mass. As the utricle and saccule have distinct functions in the vestibular system it seems appropriate to deal with these organs separately. Results are presented on mass distribution an

Development of gravity-sensing organs in altered gravity.

Experiments are described in which the development of the gravity-sensing organs was studied in newt larvae reared in microgravity on the IML-2 mission and in Aplysia embryos and larvae reared on a centrifuge at 1 to 5 g. In Aplysia embryos, the statolith (single dense mass on which gravity and linear acceleration act) was reduced in size in a graded fashion at increasing g. In early post-metamorphic Aplysia or even in isolated statocysts from such animals, the number of statoconia produced is reduced at high g. Newt larvae launched before any of the otoconia were formed and reared for 15 days

Space vestibulo-neuroscience in the new century.

In the new century there will probably be more long spaceflights and fewer short spaceflights. There will probably be several flights to Mars, flights that (if chemical rockets are used) will involve one year to get there, a second year on Mars, and a third year to return. The three-year Mars scenario will probably include rotation of the spacecraft to provide artificial gravity. If nuclear thermal rockets are used, a manned exploration of Mars could be accomplished in less than one year. Vestibular research will be directed towards ensuring that astronauts, upon landing on Mars, will be able
