Chromosomal-level reference genome assembly of the North American wolverine (Gulo gulo luscus): a resource for conservation genomics.

We report a chromosomal-level genome assembly of a male North American wolverine (Gulo gulo luscus) from the Kugluktuk region of Nunavut, Canada. The genome was assembled directly from long-reads, comprising: 758 contigs with a contig N50 of 36.6 Mb; contig L50 of 20; base count of 2.39 Gb; and a near complete representation (99.98%) of the BUSCO 5.2.2 set of 9,226 genes. A presumptive chromosomal-level assembly was generated by scaffolding against two chromosomal-level Mustelidae reference genomes, the ermine and the Eurasian river otter, to derive a final scaffold N50 of 144.0 Mb and a scaff

Endohelminths of European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Selected Localities in Poland with an Emphasis on Search of the Broad Fish Tapeworm Dibothriocephalus latus.

INTRODUCTION: A piscivorous fish European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is present in all types of lakes and brackish waters in Poland. Previous ichthyoparasitological surveys revealed broad spectrum of endohelminths in perch from different aquatic environments. Among them, detection of Diphyllobothrium sp. and Dibothriocephalus latus (syn. Diphyllobothrium latum) in the Pomeranian Bay is of particular interest, since D. latus is one of the causative agents of diphyllobothriasis, fish-borne parasitic zoonosis. Besides, D. latus eggs were previously detected in coprological samples of otter, wolf a

Spontaneous juggling behavior in a wild urban capuchin monkey (Sapajus nigritus cucullatus).

Juggling, defined as the repeated and rhythmic throwing and catching of an object, is a rare and complex form of object manipulation among non-human animals. While object play has been described in several taxa, true juggling behavior, intentional, successive aerial manipulation of the same object, has only been formally documented in a few species such as otters, dolphins, corvids, and, more recently, in gibbons and macaques. In this study, we report the first known case of juggling behavior in a wild free-ranging Platyrrhini, a juvenile black-horned capuchin monkey (Sapajus nigritus cucullat

Leveraging expression quantitative trait loci information in single-cell resolution to identify cell-specific genes for gestational diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication with long-term metabolic consequences for both mother and offspring. While genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified risk loci, the cell-type-specific genetic architecture remains poorly characterized due to the limitations of bulk-tissue analyses. METHODS: We integrated GWAS summary statistics from FinnGen (12,332 cases, 131,109 controls) with single-cell expression quantitative trait loci (sc-eQTL) data from 12 immune cell types in the OneK1K cohort. Using the OTTERS framework and ACAT-O omnibus

Toxoplasmosis in Zoo Animals: A Retrospective Pathology Review of 126 Cases.

Toxoplasma gondii is an extremely successful zoonotic protozoan parasite that has been demonstrated in a wide range of endo- and poikilothermic species. Although infection is widespread amongst domestic animals, overt disease other than abortion in small ruminants is sporadic. This survey evaluates toxoplasmosis in zoo animals based on a systematic review of pathology archive material (n = 33,506 submissions) over a 16-year study period. A total of 126 submissions, deriving from 32 zoos, two educational facilities and two private owners, were included in the study, based on gross lesions, cyto

Genetics and pathology associated with Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella spp. isolates from North American Pacific coastal marine mammals.

Southern sea otters (SSO: Enhydra lutris nereis) are a federally-listed threatened subspecies found almost exclusively in California, USA. Despite their zoonotic potential and lack of host specificity, K. pneumoniae and Klebsiella spp. have largely unknown epizootiology in SSOs. Klebsiella pneumoniae is occasionally isolated at necropsy, but not from live SSOs. Hypermucoviscous (HMV) K. pneumoniae strains are confirmed pathogens of Pacific Basin pinnipeds, but have not been previously isolated from SSOs. We characterized the virulence profiles of K. pneumoniae isolates from necropsied SSOs, ev

An Amphibious Whale from the Middle Eocene of Peru Reveals Early South Pacific Dispersal of Quadrupedal Cetaceans.

Cetaceans originated in south Asia more than 50 million years ago (mya), from a small quadrupedal artiodactyl ancestor [1-3]. Amphibious whales gradually dispersed westward along North Africa and arrived in North America before 41.2 mya [4]. However, fossil evidence on when, through which pathway, and under which locomotion abilities these early whales reached the New World is fragmentary and contentious [5-7]. Peregocetus pacificus gen. et sp. nov. is a new protocetid cetacean discovered in middle Eocene (42.6 mya) marine deposits of coastal Peru, which constitutes the first indisputable quad

Bartonella endocarditis: a pathology shared by animal reservoirs and patients.

Bartonellae were first recognized to cause endocarditis in humans in 1993 when cases caused by Bartonella quintana, B. elizabethae, and B. henselae were reported. Since the first isolation of Bartonella vinsonii subspecies berkhoffii from a dog with endocarditis, this organism has emerged as an important pathogen in dogs and an emerging pathogen in people. Subsequently, four types of B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii have been described, all of which have been associated with endocarditis in dogs. A limited number of dog endocarditis cases have also been associated with B. clarridgeiae, B. washoen

The Athabasca River regulates methylmercury burdens of waterbirds breeding downstream.

This study characterized the transport pathways and sources of mercury in downstream food webs of the Athabasca River Basin in northern Alberta, Canada. Flowing through a large boreal watershed in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region, the river drains into the ecologically-sensitive Peace-Athabasca Delta and western Lake Athabasca. Mercury stable isotope measurements on abiotic and biotic matrices were combined with spatial and temporal sampling to evaluate the importance of the Athabasca River as a conduit for mercury. Mixing model estimates derived from mercury isotopes indicated the Athabasca Riv

Variability and Time of Day Dependence of Ozone Photochemistry in Western Wildfire Plumes.

Understanding the efficiency and variability of photochemical ozone (O3) production from western wildfire plumes is important to accurately estimate their influence on North American air quality. A set of photochemical measurements were made from the NOAA Twin Otter research aircraft as a part of the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) experiment. We use a zero-dimensional (0-D) box model to investigate the chemistry driving O3 production in modeled plumes. Modeled afternoon plumes reached a maximum O3 mixing ratio of 140 ± 50 ppbv (average ± standard d

Mercury in swamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana) from wetland habitats in Wisconsin.

Wetlands play a major role in the export of methylmercury (MeHg) to a watershed. The large contribution of wetlands to watersheds in northern Wisconsin, coupled with the acidic environment of this area, makes these habitats especially vulnerable to mercury (Hg) accumulation by biota. The purpose of this study was to compare Hg accumulation between northern Wisconsin wetlands and southern Wisconsin wetlands using the swamp sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) as a representative species. The swamp sparrow was selected as a representative passerine species in which to examine Hg in these habitats, beca

Causes of mortality and morbidity in free-ranging mustelids in Switzerland: necropsy data from over 50 years of general health surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Although mustelids occur worldwide and include a wide range of species, little is known about the diseases affecting them. Mustelids have regularly been submitted for post mortem investigation in the framework of the program for general wildlife health surveillance in Switzerland, which has been in place for nearly 60 years. We performed a retrospective analysis of the necropsy reports on mustelids submitted to the diagnostic service of the University of Bern. The aims of this study were to present an overview of the causes of mortality and morbidity observed in these carnivores, t

Observations on the distribution and ecology of Clostridium botulinum type E in Alaska.

Environmental samples collected along the coastline and from the interior of Alaska were examined for the presence of Clostridium botulinum. Clostridium botulinum type E was detected in soils from 5 of 12 beaches; in 7 of 115 non-coastal soil samples; in sediments from six of eight locales; in gills of salmon from two fishing areas; and in the feces of 1 of 44 colonic samples from marine mammals. The basic biochemical characteristics of the isolates were determined. Tube tests for demonstrating gelatin liquefaction proved insensitive with these strains, whereas a plate test detected gelatinase

Multi-tissue transcriptome-wide association study identifies 29 risk genes associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common heritable neurodevelopmental disorder, affecting ~7 million children (11.4%) in the U.S. However, ADHD's underlying genetic architecture remains largely unknown. Transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS), which integrate expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and GWAS summary data, can identify differentially expressed risk genes underlying complex phenotypes. Here we conduct a TWAS of ADHD using expression data from multiple brain tissues to improve understanding of the complex genetic architecture underlying this

Virus circulation in native, introduced, and farmed mustelids in Poland.

American mink (Neogale vison) are known carriers of various viruses, including many zoonoses. Their susceptibility to a wide range of pathogens and anatomical similarities to human lungs raise concerns about their potential role in facilitating interspecies transmission. Here we analysed viruses detected in tissue samples of native mustelids, and feral and farmed mink in Poland (2019-2022). The species included American mink, pine and stone marten (Martes martes, Martes foina), weasel (Mustela nivalis), European badger (Meles meles), European polecat (Mustela putorius), and Eurasian otter (Lut

Streptococcus suis avian expansion suggests shared antibiotic use drives host jumps.

BACKGROUND: The interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health drives emerging threats, such as antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. The widespread use of the same antimicrobials in both human and livestock may play a role in interspecies bacterial transmission by disrupting natural microbial communities and creating an environment favouring resistant bacteria. Pigs and poultry receive high levels of antimicrobials and are reservoirs of multidrug-resistant bacteria, including Streptococcus suis, a zoonotic pig pathogen. S. suis detection in non-porcine hosts, particularly poultry,

Characteristics and frequency of detection of fecal Listeria monocytogenes shed by livestock, wildlife, and humans.

Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular pathogen that can be carried asymptomatically in various animals and can be shed in feces. We investigated the prevalence and characteristics of L. monocytogenes isolated from livestock, wildlife, and human potential sources of contamination in 2 areas in Ontario, Canada. From February 2003 to November 2005, a total of 268 fecal samples were collected from different animals. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated using selective enrichment, isolation, and confirmation procedures, and 15 samples (6%) yielded to the isolation of 84 confirmed str

Identification of novel gammaherpesviruses in North American carnivores.

We investigated the diversity of gammaherpesviruses (GHVs) present in North American carnivorans using GHV-targeted consensus PCR to amplify viral glycoprotein B (gB) and DNA polymerase (Dpol) genes. For each unique GHV identified, we sequenced a 3.5 kb region spanning gB to Dpol. Screening of spleen DNA from 263 individual animals comprising 17 carnivoran species from 7 families resulted in the identification of 8 unique GHVs, each associated with a single host species. We identified five viruses from mustelid species (ermine, marten, mink, fisher, and river otter) and the first GHV from a me

OTTM: an automated classification tool for translational drug discovery from omics data.

Omics data from clinical samples are the predominant source of target discovery and drug development. Typically, hundreds or thousands of differentially expressed genes or proteins can be identified from omics data. This scale of possibilities is overwhelming for target discovery and validation using biochemical or cellular experiments. Most of these proteins and genes have no corresponding drugs or even active compounds. Moreover, a proportion of them may have been previously reported as being relevant to the disease of interest. To facilitate translational drug discovery from omics data, we

Molecular eco-epidemiology of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in road-killed mammals reveals Cerdocyon thous and Cuniculus paca as new hosts harboring this fungal pathogen.

Wild animals infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis represent important indicators of this fungal agent presence in the environment. The detection of this pathogen in road-killed wild animals has shown to be a key strategy for eco-epidemiological surveillance of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), helping to map hot spots for human infection. Molecular detection of P. brasiliensis in wild animals from PCM outbreak areas has not been performed so far. The authors investigated the presence of P. brasiliensis through nested-PCR in tissue samples obtained from road-killed animals collected nearby a
