BACKGROUND: Asian/Pacific Islander (API) students have been stereotyped as the "model minority." The objective of this study was to examine the trends in health risk behaviors among API students who participated in the San Diego City Schools Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) between 1993 and 2005.
METHODS: High school students from the San Diego City School District completed the self-administered YRBS between 1993 and 2005. Among sexually active students, logistic regression for survey data was used to examine trends in health risk behaviors.
RESULTS: From 1993 to 2005, condom use at last s

Sixty-eight individuals from a Pacific island hyperendemic for subperiodic bancroftian filariasis were selected from a larger study population to include the entire clinical spectrum of filarial infection in that region and also an "endemic control" group without clinical or parasitologic evidence of filarial infection. Analysis of their blood leukocyte and humoral immune responses yielded the following major findings: 1) levels of specific antifilarial antibodies of three different immunoglobulin class (IgG and IgM measured by ELISA and IgE determined by radioimmunoassay) were significantly g

This narrative review synthesizes peer-reviewed studies of diet and/or physical activity lifestyle interventions for obesity prevention among adolescents in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. Nine databases were searched from inception to June 2024 for English and French publications. Of 2068 records identified, nine studies from Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia, and French Polynesia met inclusion criteria. Outcomes extracted included anthropometric indicators of body fatness, physical activity, and diet, alongside information on how interventions addressed sociocultural (communities and cult

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer incidence in the US-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPIs) is double that of the US mainland. American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam and the Republic of Palau receive funding from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) to implement cervical cancer screening to low-income, uninsured or under insured women. The USAPI grantees report data on screening and follow-up activities to the CDC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined cervical cancer screening and follow-up data from t

BACKGROUND: Family violence is a serious and increasingly significant public health issue, both in New Zealand and internationally. While Pacific families in New Zealand experience disproportionately higher rates of violence compared to their Palagi counterparts, little epidemiological information exists about the effect of childhood abuse on Pacific fathers and whether it increases their proclivity on perpetrating violence.
AIMS: To determine the prevalence of physical discipline administered to young Pacific children by their fathers and physical intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated

Suicide rates are high in United States (U.S.) Pacific Island Territories, where large numbers of Veterans reside. Yet knowledge of suicidal self-directed violence (SSDV) among Veterans in this region is limited. We examined the feasibility of surveying Veterans in Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and American Samoa regarding suicidal ideation (SI) and non-fatal SSDV, and examined SI and non-fatal SSDV prevalence and associations with SI. Of 3,000 Veterans invited to participate (2022), 566 completed the survey (21.6% response rate). Population-based SI estimates

Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) youth report a high prevalence rate of youth violence. Logic models that guide violence prevention programming are often not culturally specific and may not address the unique structural/social drivers of youth violence in minoritized communities. Monsoon has received Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) funding from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) since 2007 through a competitive application process. The specific aim of Monsoon's Youth Sexual Violence Prevention Program (YVPP) is to "prevent gender-based violence by educat

BACKGROUND: Higher rates of radiation therapy (RT) noncompletion may be associated with certain demographic groups in patients with prostate cancer (PC). We examined disparities in noncompletion and receipt of shorter RT regimens among disaggregated Asian American and Pacific Islander groups in the US.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of all patients diagnosed with localized PC (2004-2017) in the National Cancer Database who identified as White, East Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander, or South Asian who were treated with definitive RT. The two primary outcomes were

Genetic variation in ABCG2 (rs2231142, Q141K), encoding a uric acid transporter, is associated with gout in diverse populations. The aim of this study was to examine a role for ABCG2 in gout susceptibility in New Zealand Māori, Pacific Island and Caucasian samples. Patients (n = 185, 173 and 214, for Māori, Pacific Island and Caucasian, respectively) satisfied the American College of Rheumatology gout classification criteria. The comparison samples comprised 284, 129 and 562 individuals, respectively, without gout. rs2231142 was genotyped and stratification accounted for using genomic control

BACKGROUND: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) in young adults may represent a distinct entity with sex and ancestry-related differences. Population-level data on incidence and survival remain limited. We assessed age- and stage-specific trends in early-onset LUAD and evaluated racial and sex disparities in presentation and outcomes.
METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify patients aged 15-49 years diagnosed with LUAD. Age-adjusted incidence and stage-specific trends were assessed using joinpoint regression. Cause-specific survival was analyzed usi

Objective: Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) university students face unique mental health challenges, including disproportionately low rates of mental health service utilization compared to all other racial/ethnic groups. Despite increasing recognition of APIDA students' mental health needs, the underlying contributors to mental health disparities for these students are poorly understood. This narrative review summarizes the APIDA university student mental health literature from the last decade, focusing on social and structural contributors to students' mental health outcomes. Met

BACKGROUND: People with epilepsy (PWE), particularly Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), face significant cardiometabolic disparities. This study characterized the "triple burden" of obesity, diabetes, and tobacco use across White, Asian, and NHPI PWE in Hawaii and identified factors associated with seizure control.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 403 adult PWE (41.2% White, 24.1% Asian, 34.7% NHPI) was conducted at a Hawaii-based clinic. Multivariable logistic regression compared comorbidity profiles and identified factors associated with poor seizure control (breakthroug

INTRODUCTION: Racial disparities in surgical outcomes are well documented, yet data on American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) populations remain limited. This study examines disparities in 30-day outcomes following lumbar decompression and fusion in these underrepresented groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2017-2020). Patients undergoing lumbar decompression and fusion were identified via current procedural terminology c

BACKGROUND: Pacific Islander (PI) women in Australia have an increased risk of gestational diabetes (GDM); however, their perinatal outcomes are poorly understood.
AIM: The aim was to determine the maternal characteristics and perinatal outcomes of PI women with and without GDM compared to Australian/European (AE)-born women.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of perinatal outcomes of singleton deliveries >20 weeks' gestation between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2020 was conducted at a tertiary provider (Melbourne, Australia). Antenatal details and birth outcomes were extracted from the Bir

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in the aging population. However, little is known about CVD risk factors and outcomes for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (NH/PI) older adults by disaggregated subgroups.
METHODS: Data were from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 2011-2015 Health Outcomes Survey, which started collecting expanded racial/ethnic data in 2011. Guided by Andersen and Newman's theoretical framework, multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the prevalence and determinants of CVD r

OBJECTIVE: To compare frequencies of risk factors and pregnancy outcomes in ethnic groups versus the combined total of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations.
METHODS: Using linked birth and fetal death certificate and maternal hospital discharge data (California 2007-2018), we estimated frequencies of 15 clinical and sociodemographic exposures and 11 pregnancy outcomes. Variability across 15 AANHPI groups was compared using a heat map and compared to frequencies for the total group (n = 904,232).
RESULTS: AANHPI groups varied significantly from each other
