Molecular detection of Brucella abortus in wild and captive felids.

PURPOSE: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of great public health importance. In wild animals, Brucella abortus is one of the most diagnosed species, mainly in enzootic environments where domestic animals share the same environment. B. abortus is common in environments shared by cattle, wild, and domestic animals. This study aimed to detect the presence of B. abortus DNA in free-ranging and captivity felids at Mato Grosso State, Brazil. METHOD: Polymerase chain reaction, based on the genetic element IS711, was performed in blood samples collected from 23 free-ranging and captive felids. The s

[Trichophyton mentagrophytes-from snow leopard to man : A molecular approach for uncovering the chain of infection].

Sources of infection for Trichophyton (T.) mentagrophytes-a zoophilic dermatophyte-comprise pet rodents (guinea pigs, mice, rabbits) and sometimes cats. Human infections due to dermatophytes after contact with zoo animals, however, are extreme rare. Four zoo keepers from Basel Zoo were diagnosed to suffer from tinea manus and tinea corporis due to T. mentagrophytes. The 22-year-old daughter of one zoo keeper was also infected with tinea corporis after having worked in the snow leopard section for one day. The strain of the index patient was confirmed by a direct uniplex-PCR-EIA and sequence an

Echinococcus felidis in hippopotamus, South Africa.

Hydatid cysts of Echinococcus felidis are described from the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) from Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Among six hippopotami investigated, hepatic hydatids were found in three. The identification was based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. In addition, the rostellar hook morphology was analysed. This is the first morphological description of the metacestode of E. felidis, and the first molecularly confirmed report of the intermediate host of E. felidis in South Africa. The definitive host of E. felidis in South Africa is the lion (Panthera leo).

Diversity of Cytauxzoon spp. (Piroplasmida: Theileriidae) in Wild Felids from Brazil and Argentina.

Domestic and wild felids are frequently parasitized by apicomplexan protozoa in the genus Cytauxzoon. Expanding species diversity has recently been described within this genus, with potential implications for epidemiology and pathogenesis. In light of these findings, this study assessed the genetic diversity of Cytauxzoon spp. in wild felids (n = 66) from different eco-regions of Brazil and Argentina. Of the 66 blood samples analyzed, 53 (80.3%) were 18S rRNA gene PCR-positive for Cytauxzoon spp., including 43 jaguars (Panthera onca) and 10 ocelots (Leopardus pardalis). Panthera onca specimens

Persistent metanephric ducts in a geriatric white tiger.

An 18-year-old male intact white Tiger (Panthera tigris) was euthanized after a clinical diagnosis of severe renal failure. Postmortem macroscopic examination of the kidneys revealed unilateral hydronephrosis with renal calculi and bilateral cortical and medullary fibrosis and papillary coagulation necrosis. Interestingly, multiple large persistent metanephric ducts were found at the corticomedullary junctions accompanied by marked interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, and lymphoplasmacytic interstitial nephritis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of persistent metanephric du

Cheetah Acinonyx pardinensis (Felidae, Carnivora) from the Early Pleistocene of Crimea (Taurida Cave).

A mandible fragment of Acinonyx pardinensis (Croizet et Jobert, 1828) is described from the Early Pleistocene locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea, Late Villafranchian, about 1.8-1.5 Ma). This is the first discovery of the genus Acinonyx in the Pleistocene of Crimea. Along with other felids, such as Homotherium, Megantereon, Panthera, Lynx, and Puma, cheetahs were typical representatives of the Late Villafranchian faunas of Eurasia. In the Taurida locality, Acinonyx pardinensis is co-occurred with Homotherium crenatidens, Megantereon adroveri, and Lynx issiodorensis.

Systemic arterial hypertension secondary to chronic kidney disease in two captive-born large felids.

Systemic arterial hypertension (SHT) has been widely described in the domestic cat (Felis catus). In these feline patients, SHT is considered as the most common vascular disorder of middle-aged to older animals, and secondary SHT related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents the most common form of the disease. We describe here the first two cases of spontaneous SHT in large felids, i.e. one 18-year old, 34.4 kg, male North-Chinese leopard (Panthera pardus japonensis, case #1) and one 20-year old, 28.7 kg, female snow leopard (Panthera uncia, case #2), both captive-bred and previously dia

X-ray dark-field radiography for in situ gout diagnosis by means of an ex vivo animal study.

Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, caused by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in peripheral joints and tissue. Detection of MSU crystals is essential for definitive diagnosis, however the gold standard is an invasive process which is rarely utilized. In fact, most patients are diagnosed or even misdiagnosed based on manifested clinical signs, as indicated by the unchanged premature mortality among gout patients over the past decade, although effective treatment is now available. An alternative, non-invasive approach for the detection of MSU crystals is X-r

Head and neck injuries after leopard attack: Presentation and management.

Leopard attacks on humans are reported most often from the Indian subcontinent. The bite wounds are complex injuries infected with polymicrobial inoculum and may present as punctures, abrasions, lacerations or avulsions. The presentation and acceptable treatment of these injuries vary according to the wound. We hereby describe the clinical presentation and treatment of a male victim with leopard bite injuries on the head and neck region. As bite injuries are commonly found on and around the face, maxillofacial surgeons should be familiar with the therapy. Through thorough clinical and radiolog

Two new species of Cylicospirura Vevers, 1922 (Nematoda: Spirocercidae) from carnivores in southern Africa, with validation of the related genera Gastronodus Singh, 1934 and Skrjabinocercina Matschulsky, 1952.

Two new species of Cylicospirura Vevers, 1922 are described from carnivores from southern Africa. Cylicospirura crocutae Junker et Mutafchiev sp. n. from Crocuta crocuta (Erxleben) in Zimbabwe is distinguished from its congeners by combinations of characters, including the presence of four cephalic and four external labial papillae, while internal labial papillae were not distinct, the presence of groups of small accessory teeth between the six large tricuspid teeth, the fifth and the sixth pairs of the caudal papillae being equidistant from the cloaca, and a large ratio of length of the muscu

Context-Dependent Reactive Antipredator Behavior of Chacma Baboons (Papio ursinus griseipes) Amidst Predator Recovery.

Predation is a driving force in prey ecology and evolution, and primates exhibit diverse antipredator strategies for minimizing risk. Because these behaviors can be costly, individuals balance costs and benefits when responding to perceived threats. The cognitive capacity and behavioral plasticity of baboons make them an ideal taxon for studying the context-dependent variation in antipredator strategies. We used an autonomous, motion-activated playback experiment to study the behavioral responses of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus griseipes) to simulated predator encounters in Gorongosa National

Implications of diet for the extinction of saber-toothed cats and American lions.

The saber-toothed cat, Smilodon fatalis, and American lion, Panthera atrox, were among the largest terrestrial carnivores that lived during the Pleistocene, going extinct along with other megafauna ∼12,000 years ago. Previous work suggests that times were difficult at La Brea (California) during the late Pleistocene, as nearly all carnivores have greater incidences of tooth breakage (used to infer greater carcass utilization) compared to today. As Dental Microwear Texture Analysis (DMTA) can differentiate between levels of bone consumption in extant carnivores, we use DMTA to clarify the dieta

A Lightweight Deep Neural Network for Individual Leopard Identification: Supporting Movement Ecology in the Taihang Mountains of Henan.

Individual identification and tracking of leopards (Panthera pardus) are critical for conserving wild populations and understanding their behavioral ecology. Current methods primarily rely on manual coat pattern matching, which is inefficient for large datasets and makes it difficult to identify subadults undergoing growth-related pattern changes. Moreover, individual-based studies on the movement ecology of wild North China leopards (Panthera pardus japonensis) remain scarce. To address these challenges, we propose LeoNet, a lightweight hybrid deep learning model integrating convolutional neu

SERIAL CHANGES IN METABOLIC ACID-BASE STATUS IN THREE SPECIES OF ANESTHETIZED CAPTIVE LARGE FELID.

Determination of acid-base status contributes important information about patient health, including for patients under anesthesia. There is a paucity of information about the determinants of acid-base status of large felids managed under anesthesia, and advancement of such knowledge may contribute to patient safety. This study serially monitored the individual metabolic acid-base status of 11 large felids, including lions (Panthera leo), tigers (Panthera tigris), and cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), under general anesthesia. We analyzed the contributions of measured strong ions (sodium, chloride,

Prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis sp. infection in zoo animals in three cities in China.

Blastocystis is a highly prevalent eukaryotic parasite of many animals and humans worldwide. It can compromise the gastrointestinal tract and cause gastrointestinal symptoms, constituting a serious threat to human health and animal growth. Many animals are potential sources of Blastocystis infection in humans. However, limited data are available regarding the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis infection among zoo animals in China. Therefore, the present study examined the prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis in zoo animals in Hangzhou, Dalian, and Suzhou cities, China. Of 4

Two Cases of Fatal Leopard Attacks from Botswana.

This case report details 2 recent fatal leopard attacks on herdsmen at Zobidao Ranches in Botswana aged 24 y and 58 y. The younger man was attacked while searching for cattle, and the older man was killed while pursuing the leopard. Both men sustained multiple deep and superficial injuries to their necks, scalps, and limbs consistent with leopard attack patterns, leading to death from massive blood loss due to multiple injuries. The findings reinforce the potentially lethal nature of leopard attacks and the need to educate humans to avoid leopard territories as well as not to engage with them.

Morbid attraction to leopard urine in Toxoplasma-infected chimpanzees.

Parasites are sometimes capable of inducing phenotypic changes in their hosts to improve transmission [1]. Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan that infects a broad range of warm-blooded species, is one example that supports the so-called 'parasite manipulation hypothesis': it induces modifications in rodents' olfactory preferences, converting an innate aversion for cat odor into attraction and probably favoring trophic transmission to feline species, its only definitive hosts [2]. In humans, T. gondii induces behavioral modifications such as personality changes, prolonged reaction times and decreas

Jaguar Range-Wide Connectivity: Prioritising Core Areas and Corridors Between and Within Protected Areas and Indigenous Lands.

Anthropogenic habitat transformation has led to population declines and increasing isolation of populations of many species, particularly top predators, where small and fragmented populations often experience limited dispersal and reduced genetic diversity. Jaguars (Panthera onca), for example, have lost half of their historical range and most populations outside the Amazon biome are small, isolated and highly threatened. Here, we assess jaguar population connectivity across the species' range by identifying and ranking core areas and dispersal corridors, including linkages among Protected Are
