Compression of the peroneal nerve is an uncommon complication of labor and delivery. We describe a case of common peroneal nerve injury associated with positioning the knees in hyperflexion during delivery. The pathophysiologic mechanisms, clinical course, and possible prevention of this uncommon complication are discussed.

Twenty-five percent of patients with injuries to the plexus require surgical intervention for optimal results. Patients with loss of serratus and rhomboids, Horner's syndrome, positive myelogram, or negative evoked potentials have a high incidence of lower root avulsions and a probability of upper root ruptures. These should be explored early. Results depend on the amount of remaining axonal input available for grafting. Using intraoperative electrical studies, elements which will recover spontaneously may be saved and improved function obtained by grafting only damaged elements. Obstetrical p

Diaphragmatic paralysis (DP) in neonates is a rare yet potentially life-threatening cause of respiratory distress, often resulting from obstetric trauma or cardiac surgery. This report presents two distinct cases of bilateral DP: one following a dystocic delivery with associated brachial plexus involvement, and the other linked to a genetic mutation (SYNGAP1) in a neonate with no birth trauma. Diagnosis was established through imaging, fluoroscopy, electromyography, and genetic testing. In both cases, conservative management was initially pursued; however, due to persistent respiratory failure

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic facial (Bell's) palsy occurring during pregnancy or post partum is a rare disease. Reports regarding incidence, prognosis and associated risk factors are still inconsistent.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients presenting with idiopathic facial palsy who had been treated in cooperation between obstetric and otorhinolaryngological departments (tertiary referral centers). The time of onset of paralysis, grading according to House and Brackman, treatment modalities and results were analyzed for the years 1999-2010.
RESULTS: The incidence

Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is characterized by ventricular arrhythmias, hypokalemic periodic paralysis and developmental anomalies. It is caused by mutations in the KCNJ2 gene that encodes for the alpha-subunit of Kir2.1, a K(+) channel responsible for cardiac repolarization. Providing effective therapy to reduce arrhythmia burden and risk of sudden death is challenging, especially in the context of pregnancy and childbirth. We report a case of a pregnant 27-year-old woman with an R218W mutation in the C-terminal interaction domain of KCNJ2 causing ATS. Regular cardiac and obstetric assessm

BACKGROUND: Restoration of elbow extension in obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) with triceps paralysis is essential for optimizing upper limb function, although often considered a secondary objective.
OBJECTIVE: To assess long-term functional outcomes of triceps reinnervation via nerve transfers in pediatric OBPI patients with persistent triceps paralysis.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort included 16 patients who underwent triceps reanimation between 2007 and 2018. Inclusion criteria were the absence of active elbow extension and a minimum 4-year follow-up. Depending on the lesion le

OBJECTIVE: To study the differences in neonatal outcome and treatment measures in Finnish obstetric units.
DESIGN: A registry study with Medical Birth Register data.
SETTING AND POPULATION: All births (n = 2 94 726) in Finland from 2006 to 2010 with a focus on term, singleton non-university deliveries.
METHODS: All 34 delivery units were grouped into small (below 1000), mid-sized (1000-2999) and large (3000 or more) units, and the adverse outcome rates in neonates were compared using logistic regression.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Early neonatal deaths, stillbirths, Apgar scores, arterial cord

BACKGROUND: The treatment of obstetric brachial plexus palsy through primary reconstruction and nerve transfers has been established in the past decades. In the case of non-traumatic diseases that lead to flaccid paralysis and the inability to move the extremities, such as transverse myelitis (TM) or arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), which can have a wide variety of causes, the focus has been on rehabilitative therapy so far, while surgical interventions have been used to a lesser extent, e. g., in the form of osteotomies or muscle transfers. Our aim is to establish nerve transfers as

Following Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization on June 24, 2022, abortion criminalization in the United States has converged with interoperable health data systems, making reproductive health documentation more portable and legally legible across jurisdictions. This analytic scoping review, guided by Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), examined U.S. literature published from June 2022 through October 2025 in PubMed, OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and HeinOnline. Sources were organized by evidentiary role into Tier C (legal and analytic conditions

OBJECTIVE: Brachial plexus paralysis is a serious form of neonatal morbidity. We determined its incidence and persistence of disability and evaluated whether its occurrence could be predicted by maternal characteristics or partographic analysis in a large cohort of recent cases.
STUDY DESIGN: During the years 1994 through 1998, all infants with neonatal evidence of obstetric brachial plexus injury were identified and followed 14;>or=1 year. Obstetric details in these maternal-infant pairs were compared with 108 control pairs, matched for maternal and gestational age, parity, and birth weight.

The aim of this investigation was to study the contemporary pattern of perinatally acquired brachial plexus palsy (BPP) in Sweden. National incidence data were collected from the Swedish Medical Birth Registry. The clinical pattern of BPP was studied in the county of Skaraborg. All children (n = 52) with confirmed neonatal BPP in 1981-89 were assessed 4-14 y after birth using routine neonatal and follow-up documentation for retrospective analysis and an assessment battery for the clinical evaluation of impairment. The mothers' recollection of the birth process was recorded by interview and com

The authors report 8 cases of facial palsy collected in the Abass Ndao hospital center. Risk factors are dominated by the instrumental manipulations during delivery. Prognosis is however generally good.

This article supplies data related to 11 operated children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy. Discussion of the obstetric background, pathology, pre- and postsurgical testing and of primary and secondary surgical reconstruction also is given. The need for rehabilitation regimen is stressed.

For the majority of patients with obstetrical brachial plexus palsy, present-day conservative management yields good results. We now must direct our efforts toward improving the 10 to 15 per cent of patients who do not do well. Presently the role of microsurgical reconstruction of these injuries is undergoing evaluation. We must identify the patients with poor prognosis early: Babies should be examined at monthly intervals to document functional return, to supervise the child's exercise program, and to provide parental support. Babies who do not improve rapidly within the first 2 to 3 months s

Familial hypokalaemic periodic paralysis (FHPP) is an uncommon genetic disease characterized by muscle weakness associated with hypokalaemia. Episodes are precipitated by drugs, stress, metabolic diseases, hypothermia or infection. We report the case of a 38-year-old pregnant women with FHPP who underwent epidural analgesia for labour. Pregnant women with FHPP require multidisciplinary management involving an anaesthesiologist, a gynaecologist and a paediatrician. It is important to maintain normothermia, prevent hyperventilation, monitor electrolytes, avoid glucose infusions and medications t

Residual limb shortening is common after obstetric brachial plexus palsy. The exact limb-length discrepancy remains undetermined, and the purpose of this paper is to determine the resultant discrepancy. Twenty-two skeletally immature patients with obstetric brachial plexus palsies were examined. Radiographs of both the involved and uninvolved humerii and forearms were obtained with a radiographic ruler placed adjacent to the extremity. Each limb segment was measured and the discrepancy calculated as a percentage compared with the normal side. Twenty-one of the 22 children had some shortening o
