The function of the autonomic nervous system was assessed in 23 patients with dysmotility-like functional dyspepsia and 12 healthy volunteers by analysis of 24-hr heart rate variability and a battery of five standardized sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiovascular reflex tests. Measures of heart rate variability were obtained by analysis of ambulatory electrocardiographic recordings using both the time and the frequency domain methods. The values of parameters reflecting vagal activity (HF, rMSSD) were significantly lower in patients with functional dyspepsia. Individual analysis of heart r

We review the research which has attempted to determine whether the characteristics of autonomic innervation of ciliary smooth muscle are relevant to the process of accommodative adaptation. The effect of various topical autonomic drugs on the three phases of adaptation were analyzed: pre-task tonic accommodation (open-loop); within-task accommodative response (closed-loop); and post-task regression of accommodation to pre-task tonic levels. Although it is clear that parasympathetic innervation predominates, there is evidence that some individuals utilize supplementary inhibitory sympathetic i

Chronic preganglionic parasympathetic denervation in the rat submandibular gland increases kallikrein activity whereas post ganglionic sympathetic denervation has no effect. Ultrastructural morphology of the striated duct following either denervation remains unaltered. Chronic preganglionic parasympathetic denervation in the cat gland dramatically reduces kallikrein activity and causes disruption and disappearance of subcellular organelles. Chronic sympathetic denervation has no effect.

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of Ménière's disease is still largely unknown; however, it is known to be strongly associated with stress. Excessive stress can cause hyperactivity of the sympathetic autonomic nervous system. With the aim of understanding changes in sympathetic hyperactivity before and after Ménière's disease, we compared autonomic nervous function in patients in a stable phase of Ménière's disease and that in healthy adults. We also gathered data over about 10 years on autonomic nervous function immediately before a Ménière's attack.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
PATIENTS: Au

Chagas' disease is a major endemic disease in Latin America and a great cause for concern due to its high incidence: it afflicts 16 to 18 million individuals and places over 90 million people at risk of infection. At present, five mechanisms can be proposed to explain the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiopathy: 1. direct lesion of the tissue by Trypanosoma cruzi; 2. dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (neurogenic concept); 3. microvascular disease; 4. immunologic reaction; 5. alterations in the extracellular matrix. The neurogenic concept is the most attractive explanation for the

The present article examines how physiological systems impact on affect regulation, social engagement, and cognitive flexibility, three critical factors in psychotherapeutic success. The vagal system, associated with parasympathetic nervous activity and heart rate variability, provides an integration of brain, heart, gut, affective systems, cognitive performance, and social engagement. The author presents Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory, Julian Thayer's neurovisceral integration model, Kerstin Uvnas-Moberg's oxytocin/hormonal model, and Paul Gilbert's compassion focused therapy, as models for

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system and trigeminal nerve are involved in adjusting flow through diverging cerebral arteries in the prefrontal cortex. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 100 Hz electroacupuncture (EA) to the trigeminal nerve area on cerebral blood flow and autonomic nervous system function.
METHOD: This was a randomised crossover study of 16 healthy volunteers who were assigned to an EA or control group. Stimulation (in the EA group) was performed five times, each after 1 min of rest. Needles were inserted at the inner edge of the eyebrows and 1 cm from

The inflammatory response is modulated through interactions among the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Intercommunication between immune cells and the autonomic nervous system is a growing area of interest. Spatial and temporal information about inflammatory processes is relayed to the central nervous system (CNS) where neuroimmune modulation serves to control the extent and intensity of the inflammation. Over the past few decades, research has revealed various routes by which the nervous system and the immune system communicate. The CNS regulates the immune system via hormonal and neur

Afferent and efferent cardiac neurotransmission via the cardiac nerves intricately modulates nearly all physiological functions of the heart (chronotropy, dromotropy, lusitropy, and inotropy). Afferent information from the heart is transmitted to higher levels of the nervous system for processing (intrinsic cardiac nervous system, extracardiac-intrathoracic ganglia, spinal cord, brain stem, and higher centers), which ultimately results in efferent cardiomotor neural impulses (via the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves). This system forms interacting feedback loops that provide physiologica

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between body composition and cardiac autonomic nervous system activity in educators. The objective was to explore the associations between body fat mass (BFM) and fat-free mass (FFM) with different heart rate variability (HRV) indices in a sample of educators and to assess whether FFM moderates the relationship between BFM and autonomic function.
METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 253 educators from compulsory and higher education institutions during the 2022-2023 academic year. Autonomic regulation was assessed via HRV

OBJECTIVES: To determine if trigeminal nerve stimulation can ameliorate the consequences of acute blood loss and improve survival after severe hemorrhagic shock.
DESIGN: Animal study.
SETTING: University research laboratory.
SUBJECTS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats.
INTERVENTIONS: Severe hemorrhagic shock was induced in rats by withdrawing blood until the mean arterial blood pressure reached 27 ± 1 mm Hg for the first 5 minutes and then maintained at 27 ± 2 mm Hg for 30 minutes. The rats were randomly assigned to either control, vehicle, or trigeminal nerve stimulation treatment groups. The effe

Patients with a defecation disorder may not evoke a normal defecation reflex, or the reflex may be excessive, as a dysfunction of the spinal autonomic nervous system. Treatment with various forms of lumbar and sacral neuromodulation have shown symptom improvement, but potential changes in autonomic functioning are rarely studied. Here we evaluate the effects on autonomic function of a single session of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the lumbar and sacral spine in 41 patients with chronic gastrointestinal motor dysfunction. The LLLT protocol used red LED light at a wavelength of 660 nm for 1

BACKGROUND: In residency programs, it is well known that autonomic regulation is influenced by night duty due to workload stress and sleep deprivation. A less investigated question is the impact on the autonomic nervous system of residents before or when anticipating a night duty shift. In this study, heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated as a measure of autonomic nervous system regulation.
METHODS: Eight residents in the Department of Anesthesiology were recruited, and 5 minutes of electrocardiography were recorded under 3 different conditions: (1) the morning of a regular work day (bas

The heart and brain are an integrated, bidirectional axis, communicating through neural and hormonal pathways. This article examines the neuroanatomy, physiologic interactions, and clinical implications of this vital system. Anatomically, the cardiac autonomic nervous system features extrinsic sympathetic (norepinephrine) and parasympathetic (acetylcholine) innervation, fine-tuned by the local intrinsic cardiac nervous system. Cardiovascular diseases impair brain function, raising the risk of cognitive decline and stroke. Conversely, neurologic disorders can trigger cardiac complications via a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increased sympathetic activity is associated with cardiovascular complications in stroke, but the role of the parasympathetic nervous system has not been carefully outlined. In the present study our purpose was to assess quantitatively autonomic cardiovascular disturbances in brain infarction by measuring cardiovascular autonomic reflexes.
METHODS: We studied the autonomic regulation of cardiovascular functions prospectively in 40 patients with brain infarction (acute phase, 1 month, and 6 months) and in 55 healthy control subjects by recording heart rate and blood pre

Urinary incontinence results from disorders of the lower urinary tract or neurologic diseases either of the nerve supply to the bladder/urethra or within the central nervous system. Congenital causes include patent urachus and ectopic ureter. Coordination of lower urinary tract function involves the interaction of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic system as well as somatic branches of the central nervous system. Well-recognized causes of incontinence include equine herpes virus 1 myeloencephalopathy, polyneuritis equi (neuritis of the cauda equina), and sacral/coccygeal trauma. Idiopath

BACKGRUOUND: Insulin is a peptide hormone that regulates post-prandial physiology, and it is well known that insulin controls homeostasis at least in part via the central nervous system. In particular, insulin alters the activity of neurons within the autonomic nervous system. However, currently available data are mostly from unidentified brainstem neurons of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMV).
METHODS: In this study, we used several genetically engineered mouse models to label distinct populations of neurons within the brainstem and the spinal cord for whole-cell patch clamp r

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) disease affect a large global population and incur substantial health care costs. Impairment in gut-brain communication is one of the main causes of these disorders. The central nervous system (CNS) provides its inputs to the enteric nervous system (ENS) by modulating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to control the gastrointestinal functions. Therefore, GERD and FGID's might be associated with autonomic dysfunction, which can be identified via heart rate variability (HRV). FGIDs may be treated by restoring the au

Since the discovery of non-neuronal acetylcholine in the heart, this specific system has drawn scientific interest from many research fields, including cardiology, immunology, and pharmacology. This system, acquired by cardiomyocytes independent of the parasympathetic nervous system of the autonomic nervous system, helps us to understand unsolved issues in cardiac physiology and to realize that the system may be more pivotal for cardiac homeostasis than expected. However, it has been shown that the effects of this system may not be restricted to the heart, but rather extended to cover extra-ca
