Arterial blood gas parameters of normal foals born at 1500 metres elevation.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Arterial blood gas analysis is widely accepted as a diagnostic tool to assess respiratory function in neonates. To the authors' knowledge, there are no published reports of arterial blood gas parameters in normal neonatal foals at altitude. OBJECTIVE: To provide information on arterial blood gas parameters of normal foals born at 1500 m elevation (Fort Collins, Colorado) in the first 48 h post partum. HYPOTHESIS: Foals born at 1500 m will have lower PaO2 and PaCO2 than foals born at sea level due to low inspired oxygen and compensatory hyperventilation occurring

Neuromonitoring: brain oxygenation and microdialysis.

Patients with cerebral lesions run a high risk of developing cerebral hypoxic and ischemic damage due to secondary insults. To minimize the risk of secondary cerebral hypoxia and ischemia, new monitoring techniques of cerebral oxygenation and metabolism have been developed and may help to understand the pathophysiology of secondary brain damage for a better treatment and outcome in critical patients. Cerebral microdialysis is a relatively new technique for measuring brain molecules of the extracellular space. The technical aspects, the interpretation of the commonly measured parameters, the us

[Estimation of gasometric values at different altitudes above sea level in Mexico].

We calculated reference values for arterial blood gases at different altitudes in Mexico assuming that sea level PaCO2 is 40 Torr, and in Mexico City (2.24 km. above the sea level) is 31.13 Torr, average of reported reference values. With the previous two points, it is possible to calculate a linear regression: PaCO2 = 40-3.96(altitude in km.). The equation is very similar to that calculated from reports in alveolar gas in North-Americans (Fitzgerald < 5 km): PACO2 = 39.3-3.11(altitude in km), and from subjects acclimatized to acute altitude exposure (< 5 km): PACO2 = 38.3-2.5 (altitude in km)

[Induced sputum. Indication for examination in Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia?].

Induced sputum is a simple, rapid, and non-invasive technique for detection of Pneumocystis carinii in patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. In this study 31 patients were examined both with induced sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage. P. carinii was found in 24 patients. In 68% of the samples obtained by the induced sputum method the microorganism was found after Giemsa or methenamine silver staining. In 32% the diagnosis was established in the lavage fluid only. Induced sputum is indicated in moderate cases of P. carinii infection. Bronchoalveolar lavage has to be performed in suspecte

Effect of ethanol on interaction of hypoxia and PCO2 levels in rabbits.

The following three kinds of hypoxia were imposed on rabbits: the inhalation of two hypoxic gas mixtures (O2 2%-CO2 5%-N2 93% [CO2-added hypoxic] and O2 2%-N2 98% [CO2-free hypoxic]) and asphyxiation by tracheal occlusion. Ethanol (1.5g/kg of body weight) was given intravenously 30 min before the start of the hypoxia. A period up to the onset of apnea, as well as death, was shorter in the ethanol-treated group than in the non-treated group. This respiratory depressing effect of ethanol was evident in the hypoxic gas inhalation group. There was no significant difference in the PO2 value when ap

Tension pneumothorax during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Life-threatening tension pneumothorax in neonates on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been associated with an increase in arterial oxygen tension and a decrease in peripheral perfusion, followed by a decrease in ECMO flow with progressive hemodynamic deterioration. To investigate this triad, chest tubes were placed bilaterally in 9 dogs to allow injection of air to produce tension pneumothorax. Six dogs were subsequently placed on standard venoarterial ECMO before the reinduction of tension pneumothorax. Measured values included arterial pulse pressure, inferior vena cava pressur

[Inhibiting effect of hypoxia on the development of tumor-like formations in the fungus Fusarium bulbigenum var. blasticola].

When cultivating Fusarium bulbigenum var. blasticola on the synthetic Rider media on the primary colonies tumour-like formations appear which are autonomous nondifferentiated cells. They display the resemblance with the real tumours in the following signs: differentiation, polymorphism, unlimited self-maintainance, aerobic glycolysis, etc. It is shown that under conditions of hypoxia, corresponding to the altitude of 2000-1000 m above sea-level the frequency of tumour-like formations decreases by 9-66% as compared to the cultivation conditions at pO2 of atmospheric air.

Hyperventilation-induced cerebral hypoxia.

Acute respiratory alkalosis decreases cerebral blood flow, increases the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen, and can result in cerebral hypoxia. This experiment was designed to study this phenomenon in dogs, and to demonstrate the effect of an increased concentration of inspired oxygen. Seven mongrel dogs were anesthetized with pentobarbital and ventilated with a constant volume respirator. A Telfon-coated stainless steel catheter was placed through a craniotomy into the parietal lobe and advanced through the corona radiata to monitor cerebral PO2 and PCO2 with a mass spectrometer. Steady state

Blood pressure of rabbits was decreased 20-30% by intravenous administration of prostaglandin E1. The blood flows of the ciliary body and choroid were measured using the hydrogen gas clearance method. The ciliary body blood flow was 92.6 +/- 9.3 ml/min/100 g before administration, and 91.6 +/- 18.8 after. The choroidal blood flow was 75.6 +/- 10.0 and 73.9 +/- 6.6, respectively. There were no significant differences in blood flow before and after administration of prostaglandin E1. Partial pressure of arterial blood carbon dioxide and oxygen, pupil size and ocular tension were also measured ag

[Treatment of severe forms of idiopathic respiratory distress in newborn infants using constant negative perithoracic pressure].

49 children with a severe idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome were treated by continuous negative pressure ranging from 5 cm of water to a negative pressure of 13 cm of water around the thorax. The partial pressure of oxygen rose significantly in the majority of cases, and the alveolo-arterial gradient also significantly diminished by more than 100 mm of mercury. 29 children were treated by this method alone, but in 20 other children owing to the failure of constant negative pressure, respiratory assistance either by intermittent pressure ventilation or intermittent positive pressure vent

Improvement of brain electrical activity during treatment of porcine malignant hyperthermia with dantrolene.

Three months before this study, susceptibility for malignant hyperthermia (MH) had been tested in 15 pigs. In all pigs, MH was triggered by administration of 1% halothane. Brain electrical activity was examined during therapy of MH with and without administration of dantrolene. From the EEG, power densities in selected frequencies and the median frequency of the power spectrum were calculated. Therapy was started when severe respiratory changes were observed (PaCO2 > 10 kPa, mixed venous oxygen tension (PvO2) < 4 kPa). At this time, heart rate exceeded 150 beat min-1, mean arterial pressure (M

[Use of controlled hyperventilation in the treatment of comatose patients with cranial injuries].

Controlled hyperventilation is a recognized method by which it is possible to reduce the intracerebral blood volume and thus the intracranial pressure (ICP). In the review, the physiological conditions involved in the regulation of ICP are illustrated, particularly in connection with acute cranial traumata and effect of controlled hyperventilation in these situations is discussed. Controlled hyperventilation is recommended in the hyperacute phase for all patients with cranial trauma prolonged impairment of consciousness (Glasgow Coma Scale less than 7 for more than 30 minutes) and other clinic

Pulmonary arterial haemodynamics and blood gas values of Thoroughbred racehorses with a history of epistaxis during a race.

In ten Thoroughbred racehorses which suffered epistaxis during a race, the mean pulmonary arterial diastolic pressure (PADP) was significantly higher, and the mean pulmonary arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) was significantly lower, than the corresponding mean values of a sample of fourteen clinically normal Thoroughbreds in training. The authors conclude that in horses with epistaxis during a race, pulmonary dysfunction may persist for up to two months after the episode, and that the results indicate a need for pulmonary function studies before and after racing, in order to resolve problems conc

Cardiopulmonary effects of butorphanol tartrate in dogs.

The effects of butorphanol given (IV) at dose levels of 0.1 and 0.4 mg/kg were evaluated in conscious dogs, n = 5 for each dose. Mild sedation occurred, though it was greater in dogs given the larger dose. Two dogs in each group panted, but PaCO2 was not significantly changed. Small, but significant, decreases in arterial blood pressure, heart rate, and PaO2 occurred (P less than 0.05). Base excess developed a negative trend. The PCV and total protein decreased slightly in dogs given the smaller dose, but were unchanged with the larger dose. Plasma glucose remained within acceptable limits.

Volume of carotid bodies was measured morphometrically in rats with experimental lung emphysema or silicosis. The mean volume of the left carotid body was 19.9 +/- (SD) 12.4 in 13 control rats, 30.7 +/- 12.5 in 9 rats with lung emphysema, and 41 +/- 18.9 . 10(6) micrometer 3 in 10 rats with lung silicosis. There was no correlation between carotid body volume and pulmonary arterial blood pressure. A good correlation was found between the volume of carotid body and partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood.
