PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors make it possible to measure air pollution in homes, workplaces, and communities that are poorly represented by regulatory networks. Their readings, however, are sensitive to humidity, aerosol composition, concentration range, unit-to-unit variation, and aging. This review examines laboratory and field calibration evidence across environmental and occupational settings, emphasizing transferability and the consequences of calibration error for exposure assessment and health inference.
RECENT FINDINGS: The review identified 66 peer-revi

Elevated blood pressure (BP) in children is a risk factor for adult hypertension and is increasing globally. Ambient particulate matter (PM) is associated with increased BP in children in urban areas, but data from rural regions are sparse. The Children's AIRE study enrolled children 6-8 years in 2017-2019 and collected data bi-annually through Spring 2022. Residential addresses were spatially linked to regulatory air pollution monitors to determine long-term (12-month) and short-term (7-day) exposure to PM2.5 and PM10. Systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were measured up to five times in

Background/Objectives: Lymphomas are the third most common pediatric malignancy, with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) comprising around 7% of childhood cancers. Environmental exposures have been linked to its etiology. Particulate matter (PM) prenatal exposure is increasingly scrutinized for potential effects on early-life carcinogenesis. We investigated whether exposure during pregnancy to PM2.5 and PM10 was associated with childhood NHL incidence. Methods: A population-based case-control study was conducted in Spain (2009-2016), including 3,682,038 children < 15 years. Incident NHL cases (n = 289

Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) air pollution is a major environmental concern with well-documented links to health and life satisfaction. While mechanistic pathways underlying these associations are being actively researched, the genetic and environmental sources of these links remain largely unexplored. In this regard, emerging adulthood is intriguing, as young adults increasingly establish lives outside parental homes, allowing for greater separation of shared familial and individual-specific effects. To leverage this time window and examine the role of shared and unique factors, we ana

Exposure to ambient airborne particulate matter (PM) has been associated with almost 9 million premature deaths per year worldwide. Ports are essential infrastructure for trade and transport, with over 80% of the world's international trade volume travelling by sea, yet there is little understanding of the potential health effects of PM from ships. Here, we studied the elemental and toxicological characteristics of size-fractionated PM collected at different areas of a busy European mixed-use port. We found that unregulated ultrafine PM, a PM size fraction <100 nm in aerodynamic diameter, orig

Few studies have reported an association between intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) and preconception exposure to PM2.5 and sunlight duration, but there has been no in-depth analysis of the correlation between ICP and different constituents of PM2.5. Thus, we performed this retrospective analysis among 160,544 pregnant women who delivered between 2014 and 2020, to further estimate the impact of different constituents of PM2.5, as well as the duration of sunlight, on ICP via generalized linear models. During the three months prior to conception, the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for ICP

A growing body of evidence consistently highlights the substantial risks associated with both acute and chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which significantly increasing the incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Given that lung health is a critical determinant of overall human well-being, it remains a central focus of medical research. This review investigates the association between PM2.5 exposure and various forms of lung damage, employing both epidemiological and clinical perspectives. Furthermore, the review delves into the molecular mechanis

BACKGROUND: Anemia is common among HIV/AIDS patients, impacting prognosis. Particulate matter (PM) exposure is an understudied, potentially modifiable risk factor in this group.
METHODS: We gathered 36,266 hemoglobin (Hb) measurements from 6808 HIV/AIDS patients from the HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Response Information Management System from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2021. We evaluated the relationship between Hb levels and short-term PM exposure using linear mixed-effects models. We used logistic regression to estimate the association of long-term PM exposure with baseline anemia prevalence a

Particulate matter from motor vehicle exhaust is a type of important atmospheric particulates, which can absorb sunlight affecting its photochemical behavior. However, the photochemical activity of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) in motor vehicle exhaust particulate matter has not been explored. Here, we applied WSOC in particulate matter from motor vehicle exhaust to investigate the photogenerating ability of its reactive oxygen species (ROS) and its effect based on model phenol photodegradation with the comparison between WSOC in diesel particulate matter and in gasoline particulate m

Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is associated with reproductive health and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, studies evaluating biological markers of PM2.5 are lacking, and identifying biomarkers for estimating prenatal exposure to prevent pregnancy complications is essential. Therefore, we aimed to explore urine metabolites that are easy to measure as biomarkers of exposure. In this matched case-control study based on the PM2.5 exposure, 30 high PM2.5 group (>15 μg/m3) and 30 low PM2.5 group (<15 μg/m3) were selected from air pollution on pregnancy outcome (APPO) cohort study. We used a tim

In urban areas, a major source of harmful particulate matter is generated by vehicles. In particular, bus stops, where people often stay for public transportation, generate high concentrations of particulate matter compared to the general atmosphere. In this study, a non-powered type brush filter that generates electrostatic force without using a separate power source was developed to manage the concentration of particulate matter exposed at bus stops, and the removal performance of particulate matter was evaluated. The dust collection performance of the non-motorized brush filter varied by ma

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus prevalence is steadily increasing worldwide, posing a significant threat to the short-term and long-term health of both mother and offspring. Because particulate matter air pollution has been reported to affect glucose metabolism, it was suggested that maternal particulate matter exposure may be associated with the development of gestational diabetes mellitus; however, the evidence is limited and inconsistent.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the association between maternal exposure to particulate matter of diameter ≤2.5 µm and of diameter of

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a major component of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5), which has been recognized by the World Health Organization under the name "Class I Carcinogen". Lung microbial communities are present widely in the lung tissue of a variety of organisms and play a significant role in the development and progression of lung disease, while cGAS is a DNA receptor that senses the invasion of microbial pathogens and activates the innate immune response. However, the role of cGAS in pulmonary flora-mediated PM2.5-induced lung injury is still largely unknown. With constructed cG

Flying insects are potential mobile samplers of airborne particulate matter (PM). However, current knowledge on their susceptibility to PM is limited to pollinators. Insects' capacity for particle surface accumulation depends on the lifestyle, structure of the body integuments, and behavioral patterns. Here, we investigate how two species of flying omnivorous insects from the genus Vespula, possessing direct interactions with air, soil, plants, and herbivores, indicate industrial pollution by accumulating coarse (PM10) and fine (PM2.5) particles on their bodies. The internal accumulation of pa

PM2.5 (fine particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in diameter) is a key pollutant that can produce acute asthma exacerbations and longer-term deterioration of respiratory health. Individual exposure to PM2.5 is unique and varies across microenvironments. Low-cost sensors (LCS) can collect data at a spatiotemporal resolution previously unattainable, allowing the study of exposures across microenvironments. The aim of this study is to investigate the acute effects of personal exposure to PM2.5 on self-reported asthma-related health. Twenty-eight non-smoking adults with asthma living in Scotland collected P

Particulate matters (PMs) such as PM10 and PM2.5 were collected at a bus stop and were analyzed using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to identify organic polymeric materials in them. The major pyrolysis products of the PM samples were isoprene, toluene, styrene, dipentene, and 1-alkenes. The pyrolysis products generated from the PM samples were identified using reference polymeric samples such as common rubbers (natural rubber, butadiene rubber, and styrene-butadiene rubber), common plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate)), plant-rela
