Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of a range of animal, and occasionally human, diseases. Problems with antimicrobial treatment of P. multocida highlight the need to find other possible ways, such as prophylaxis, to manage infections. Current vaccines against P. multocida include inactivated bacteria, live attenuated and nonpathogenic bacteria; they have disadvantages such as lack of immunogenicity, reactogenicity, or reversion to virulence. Using bioinformatics approaches, potentially immunogenic and protective epitopes were identified and merged to design the most optimally immuno

Prosthetic vascular bypass graft infection is a rare complication requiring prompt identification and isolation of the organism. A 66-year-old woman developed left lower extremity pain and a pulsatile pseudoaneurysm 7 months after left common femoral to peroneal artery bypass with prosthetic polytetrafluoroethylene graft, requiring re-exploration and a jump graft. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from blood and tissue culture specimens, and the patient admitted to a new kitten that frequently bit her lower extremities. Treatment included intravenous administration of ertapenem for 6 weeks fo

In this study, 108 P. multocida isolates recovered from various host animals such as cattle, buffalo, swine, poultry (chicken, duck, and emu) and rabbits were screened for carriage of 8 virulence associated genes. The results revealed some unique information on the prevalence of virulence associated genes among Indian isolates. With the exception of toxA gene, all other virulence associated genes were found to be regularly distributed among host species. Association study between capsule type and virulence genes suggested that pfhA, nanB, and nanH genes were regularly distributed among all ser

A 64-year-old man was admitted with abdominal pain 6 weeks after treatment with intravenous flucloxacillin for cellulitis of his right leg. Urgent operation was necessary for a mycotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta due to infection with Pasteurella multocida, a microorganism residing in the oral cavity of domestic animals that very rarely causes infection of native arteries or grafts. The aorta was repaired with a rifampin-coated tube graft. Despite postoperative duodenal perforation, abdominal Candida infections, wound dehiscence, and renal insufficiency, the patient is alive 1 year postope

Pasteurella multocida is a mucosal pathogen that colonizes the upper respiratory system of rabbits. Respiratory infections can result, but the bacteria can also invade the circulatory system, producing abscesses or septicemia. P. multocida produces extracellular sialidase activity, which is believed to augment colonization of the respiratory tract and the production of lesions in an active infection. Previously, it was demonstrated that some isolates of P. multocida contain two unique sialidase genes, nanH and nanB, that encode enzymes with different substrate specificities (S. Mizan, A. D. He

A 73-year-old female patient presented with Pasteurella multocida erysipelas-like cellulitis, bacteremia, and shock. The onset of the disease occurred 24 h after a cat bit her to the right lower leg. Initially, the picture of bacteremia and shock developed, with minimal local cellulitis. Pasteurella multocida grew in blood culture. A combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid was therapeutically successful in respect that the signs of bacteremia and shock disappeared. However, extensive erysipelas-like cellulitis developed on the bitten leg within the next 2 days. The disease was efficient

Seven 18-wk-old pullets from a commercial layer flock experiencing increased mortality associated with neurologic and respiratory symptoms were submitted to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System at the Turlock Branch for necropsy. Clinical signs included depression, torticollis, swollen eyelids, conjunctivitis, and sinusitis. Meningoencephalitis and suppurative inflammation of the cranial air spaces were found on histopathology. The brain, sinuses, and air spaces of the cranium were infected with Pasteurella multocida. Complicating the condition was Mycoplasma gallisepticum in

Amino asid metabolism was studied by thin layer chromatography in 25 Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from various manifestations of the disease chicken septicemia. Six amino acids were used: DL-ornithin, L-cystein, L-asparagin, DL-serin, L-arginin and Acidum glutaminicum. The Pasteurella strains studied include in their metabolism the amino acid asparagin, but serin and cystein are excluded. The strains isolated from birds suffering from acute and atypical septicemia do not metabolize ornithin, while these isolated from birds having wattles oedema or from calves suffering from arthritis

BACKGROUND: There is limited data regarding the sources of human Pasteurella multocida infection, characteristics of infected populations, and the antibiotic resistance patterns of human strains.
METHODS: Through the multi-database platforms, we conducted a comprehensive review and analysis of 482 reported cases of Pasteurella multocida from the world since from 1964 to 2023, including the sources of infection, sex and age distribution of infected individuals, and the clinical manifestations of infection in different age groups. Additionally, we evaluated the antibiotic susceptibility of diff

A case of glossitis calcinosa in a dog caused by Pasteurella multocida is reported. Swelling of the tongue and reduced appetite were the predominant clinical symptoms. Due to latent infections with P. multocida in many species there is a risk of bitewounds being infected with this microorganism. In order to find the carrier-rate of P. multocida samples in canines, teeth and gingiva of 121 dogs and 30 cats were examined bacteriologically, revealing a carrier rates of 55% and 80% respectively. The rate is significantly higher in dogs with poor oral hygiene (calcula), and there is a tendency towa

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus commonly found in the oral and respiratory flora of cats and dogs. Human infection typically occurs following animal bites or scratches and most commonly presents as skin and soft tissue infection. Respiratory infections and bacteremia are less common and are usually reported in elderly or immunocompromised individuals. We present a case of a previously healthy male with a one-week history of fever, nonproductive cough, fatigue, myalgias, chills, and generalized weakness. Workup revealed left lower lobe pneumonia and Pasteurella bacteremia

This case report highlights a rare instance of Pasteurella multocida meningitis in a 2-month-old infant, complicated by subdural empyema. The pathogen was identified using next-generation sequencing (NGS), despite negative bacterial cultures, underscoring the diagnostic challenges. The strain was predicted to be resistant to meropenem and ampicillin, necessitating a tailored treatment approach. The strain was likely transmitted through a neighbor's dog, emphasizing the complexity of P. multocida transmission. This case underscores the importance of advanced diagnostic techniques and personaliz

Pasteurella multocida is a well-known cause of skin and soft tissue infections resulting from animal bites. The patient was a newborn male with no perinatal abnormalities except for a cephalohematoma on the left parietal region. At 10 days of age, he had a bite wound to the cephalohematoma from an indoor dog. The wound was very mild and there was no bleeding. At 12 days of age, he visited a local hospital with a fever and poor feeding. At presentation, he was in septic shock and was transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital. On day three of hospitalization, P. multocida was identi

Reports of primary cardiovascular disease in goats are rare and most commonly include ventricular septal defect, valvular endocarditis, traumatic pericarditis, ionophore poisoning and nutritional cardiomyopathies. We now report the pathological findings in a 67 kg, 6-year-old, adult female Boer goat that presented with neurological signs (ie, head pressing, unsteadiness and paddling) and hyperthermia 2 days prior to death. Lack of therapeutic response to meloxicam and penicillin‒streptomycin and poor prognosis led to euthanasia of the animal. At necropsy, the main findings included severe aort

Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) is one of the most important virulence factors of Pasteurella multocida type D. Pasteurella multocida infection has caused enormous economic losses in the pig farming industry. Although it is well known that this bacterial infection causes progressive atrophic rhinitis, its effects on other organ tissues in pigs are unclear. In this study, PMT was expressed and purified, and the cytotoxic effects of PMT on four types of swine cells, LLC-PK1, PAM, IPEC, and ST, were investigated. LLC-PK1 exhibited the highest sensitivity to the cytotoxic effects of PMT. Our stu

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera, and florfenicol (FF) has potent antibacterial activity against P. multocida and is widely used in the poultry industry. In this study, we established a P. multocida infection model in ducks and studied the pharmacokinetics of FF in serum and lung tissues after oral administration of 30 mg/kg bodyweight. The maximum concentrations reached (Cmax) were lower in infected ducks (13.88 ± 2.70 μg/ml) vs. healthy control animals (17.86 ± 1.57 μg/ml). In contrast, the mean residence time (MRT: 2.35 ± 0.13 vs. 2.27 ± 0.18 hr) and elimination
