Infestation of a diabetic foot by Wohlfahrtia magnifica.

Myiasis is the infestation of animals or humans by larvae from some species of dipteran flies. Depending on the tissues invaded, the maggots of these insects can produce different diseases of the skin, or mucoses (ocular, genitourinary, and oropharyngeal). Wohlfahrtia magnifica is one of the species causing myiasis; although it is a real veterinary problem, it rarely infests humans and extraordinarily in the context we describe. We herein present the case of a diabetic patient diagnosed with class IV peripheral vascular disease (Fontaine classification) who suffered infestation by W. magnifica

Disseminated aspergillosis in dogs.

Clinical and pathological findings are reported from a series of 12 cases of disseminated aspergillosis (A. terreus) in 11 German Shepherd dogs and one Dalmatian referred to Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital (MUVH) over the period 1980 to 1984. A preliminary study of humoral and cell mediated immune components and complement levels revealed no consistent abnormality in 9 dogs tested apart from raised IgG levels. Serum IgA levels were depressed in 30% of cases. Serial data from one extensively monitored case is presented. The unusual epidemiological and pathogenetic features of the disease

Quantifying the carbon footprint of canine breed-specific surgical care in a veterinary referral setting.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and apply a calculator to quantify the carbon footprint of breed-specific surgical care in dogs, from hospital admission to discharge, in a veterinary referral setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Breed-specific procedures were defined as surgeries performed uniquely or predominantly in particular breeds due to inherited or conformational pathology, as identified by the relevant clinical services. All dogs undergoing breed-specific procedures at a UK veterinary referral hospital over an eight-month period were prospectively studied. Data collected included procedure type, dia

Gaining insights into novel pathogen hosts: Characterisation of Actinomyces weissii strains isolated from companion animals.

Actinomyces weissii was first isolated from the oral cavity of dogs in 2012. This study characterised the phenotypic and genotypic features of 11 additional strains obtained from diverse pathological lesions in companion animals. A multi-faceted approach was employed, combining culture techniques, biochemical profiling, MALDI-TOF MS, real-time PCR, sequencing of genetic markers, and whole-genome analysis. Despite minor phenotypic variation, MALDI-TOF MS and genotypic analyses consistently confirmed species identity and revealed intraspecies diversity. Whole-genome sequencing revealed four haem

Novel anti-Wolbachia drugs, a new approach in the treatment and prevention of veterinary filariasis?

Filarial nematodes are tissue-dwelling parasitic worms that can cause a range of disfiguring pathologies in humans and potentially lethal infections of companion animals. The bacterial endosymbiont, Wolbachia, is present within most human and veterinary filarial pathogens, including the causative agent of heartworm disease, Dirofilaria immitis. Doxycycline-mediated drug targeting of Wolbachia leads to sterility, clearance of microfilariae and gradual death of adult filariae. This mode of action is attractive in the treatment of filariasis because it avoids severe host inflammatory adverse reac

Fundoscopy in cats: a practical guide and common findings.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Comprehensive examination of the feline fundus should be in every clinician's arsenal. It is an integral part of both the physical and ophthalmic examination, especially in senior cats and in the presence of intraocular inflammation and visual impairment. Fundoscopy provides critical insight into a wide range of systemic diseases, often leading to quicker diagnoses and better treatment outcomes. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Practice is needed to become proficient and take high-quality photos of the retina. Distinguishing between normal variants and pathological findings can be ch

Naturally Occurring Endocrine Disorders in Non-Human Primates: A Comprehensive Review.

Literature concerning veterinary medicine of non-human primates is continuously updated, yet endocrine disorders remain underreported. While case or survey reports of individual endocrinopathies are available, a comprehensive review is not. An exhaustive literature search on this subject via widely used academic search systems, (e.g., Google Scholar, PubMed, BioOne complete and Web of Science), and peer-reviewed publications, proceedings, and newsletters was performed. Selected major endocrine entities will be described with emphasis on clinical signs, morphologic appearances, concomitant dise

Clinical and clinico-pathologic characteristics of Shiba dogs with a deficiency of lysosomal acid beta-galactosidase: a canine model of human GM1 gangliosidosis.

The present study was conducted to determine the clinical and clinico-pathologic characteristics of Shiba dogs with GM1 gangliosidosis, which is due to an autosomal recessively inherited deficiency of lysosomal acid beta-galactosidase activity. Clinical and clinico-pathological features were investigated in 10 homozygous Shiba dogs with GM1 gangliosidosis. The age at onset was 5 to 6 months and the dogs manifested progressive neurologic signs including loss of balance, intermittent lameness, ataxia, dysmetria and intention tremor of the head. The dogs were unable to stand by 10 months of age d

Forensic pathology and toxicological analyses: A case of fatal xylazine poisoning.

Xylazine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist commonly used as a veterinary sedative, has gained notoriety for its increasing misuse in combination with opioids, such as fentanyl, to potentiate its effects. This trend has led to a rise in cases of xylazine poisoning. Although timely diagnosis and intervention have reduced fatalities, the postmortem pathological manifestations and lethal blood concentration of xylazine alone remain poorly characterized due to its common co-occurrence in toxicology with fentanyl. This study presented a case of homicide involving fatal intoxication solely from xyla

Computed tomography features and prevalence of focal diaphragmatic mineralization in 300 dogs.

A focal area of mineral attenuation is commonly observed in the diaphragmatic crura of canine patients undergoing a thoracic CT. There is no mention of this finding in either the human or veterinary medicine literature. This retrospective study evaluates 300 canine thoracic CT studies with the aim of describing the CT appearance of this finding and establishing a prevalence in a large cohort of dogs. The presence of the mineral focus and its CT characteristics, including length, attenuation, and appearance, were recorded and correlated with the patient's signalments and anamnesis. The focus wa
