OBJECTIVE: Alternative splicing represents an important nuclear mechanism in the posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression, which is frequently altered during tumorigenesis. Previously, we described marked changes in alternative splicing of the CD44 gene in ovarian and breast cancer as well as specific induction of distinct splicing factors during tumor development. The present study was focused on the expression profiles of different splicing factors, including classical serine-arginine (SR) proteins including ASF/SF2, hTra2β1, hTra2α, and Y-box-binding protein (YB-1) in physiological

BACKGROUND: The neonatal acute physiology score, SNAP-II, reflects the severity of illness in newborns. In term newborns, amplitude integrated EEG (aEEG), is depressed following asphyxia. In preterm infants aEEG is discontinuous, and therefore more difficult to assess compared to term infants.
AIMS: Our first aim was to investigate whether assessing aEEG amplitudes by calculating amplitude centiles was consistent with assessment by pattern recognition. Our second aim was to investigate whether the aEEGs of preterm infants were influenced by SNAP-II.
STUDY DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: We recorded aEE

The concept of constitutional thinness first emerged in the scientific literature at the beginning of the 20th century. Yet, this concept of a physiologically determined thinness, which clearly differentiated it from anorexia nervosa and challenged the basic notions of metabolism, intrigued the medical community. How could a young, healthy person with normal food intake present such an underweight state that resists body-weight gain? Due to either skepticism or disinterest, the fact remains that fewer than 50 clinical studies have focused on constitutional thinness in the last 90 years, contra

RATIONALE: Chronic substance use disrupts autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, altering stress and reward processing. The clinical significance of autonomic responses to alcohol-related stimuli in cocaine use disorder (CUD) remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated ANS reactivity to alcohol-related cues and emotional stimuli in individuals with CUD and healthy controls, aiming to characterize specific patterns of autonomic dysregulation and their relationship to craving.
METHODS: Participants with CUD (n = 80) and healthy controls (n = 42) performed two tasks-alcohol cue exposu

BACKGROUND: While automated insulin delivery (AIDs) systems have significantly improved glycemic control for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D), there remains a need for identifying and acting upon complex physiologic and behavioral patterns which consistently lead to hypo- and hyperglycemia. Prior methods have lacked the ability to automatically identify and extract patterns across mixed-type multidimensional data (eg, insulin, glucose, activity) without instilling bias from stipulations on time-lagged coupling, pattern length, or pre-defining patterns.
METHODS: We introduce a new patter

Hypertension is a leading cause of global cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, yet its primary etiology remains poorly defined. Accumulating evidence increasingly positions inflammation as a key determinant of disease progression, with both innate and adaptive immune mechanisms playing central roles. Under physiological conditions, the immune system safeguards vascular homeostasis through the coordinated activity of immune cells and soluble mediators. Cells of the innate immune system, such as natural killer cells, dendritic cells, macrophages, and neutrophils, detect pathogen- and damage-a

Anticoagulation is vital to maintain blood fluidic status and physiological functions in the field of clinical blood-related procedures. Here, novel biomimetic anticoagulated porous inverse opal hydrogel particles is presented as anticoagulant bearing dynamic screening capability. The inverse opal hydrogel particles possess abundant sulfonic and carboxyl groups, which serve as binding sites with multiple coagulation factors and inhibit the blood coagulation process. Owing to the variations of refractive index and pore sizes during the binding process, the particles appeared corresponding struc

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a prevalent gynaecological disease characterised by vaginal wall inflammation that is caused by Candida species. VVC impacts almost three-quarters of all women throughout their reproductive years. As the vaginal mucosa is the first point of contact with microbes, vaginal epithelial cells are the first line of defence against opportunistic Candida infection by providing a physical barrier and mounting immunological responses. The mechanisms of defence against this infection are displayed through the rapid shedding of epithelial cells, the presence of pattern re

To explore the prevention and protection effect of Diosocorea nipponica (DNM)) on acute gouty arthritis (AGA) rats based on liver metabonomics, and find potential biomarkers and related pathways. AGA model rats were induced by monosodium urate crystal suspension. UPLC-TOF-MS coupled with pattern recognition technique was employed to find out the potential biomarkers and related metabolic pathways. Eleven common potential biomarkers were identified. Among the potential intervention targets in normal rats given by DNM, 4 biomarkers were up-regulated, and the other 4 targets were down regulated.

Alternatively activated macrophages express the pattern recognition receptor scavenger receptor A (SR-A). We demonstrated previously that coculture of macrophages with tumor cells upregulates macrophage SR-A expression. We show in this study that macrophage SR-A deficiency inhibits tumor cell migration in a coculture assay. We further demonstrate that coculture of tumor-associated macrophages and tumor cells induces secretion of factors that are recognized by SR-A on tumor-associated macrophages. We tentatively identified several potential ligands for the SR-A receptor in tumor cell-macrophage

Advancing knowledge regarding the cellular mechanisms of intestinal inflammation has led to a better understanding of the disease pathology in patients with chronic disorders of the gut including inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, lymphocytic colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. An emerging new paradigm suggests that changes in the homeostasis of bacteria- and host-derived signal transduction at the epithelial cell level may lead to functional and immune disturbances of the intestinal epithelium. It has become clear from numerous studies that enteric bacteria are a critical componen

Genotype-to-phenotype (G2P) prediction is the central mission of modern plant breeding. Genomic data accumulation has outpaced the ability of current frameworks to predict field performance across variable environments. Statistical genomic models deliver computationally efficient breeding values but lose accuracy when applied outside training environments. Artificial intelligence extracts high-dimensional patterns at very high throughput but extrapolates unreliably under novel stress conditions. Conventional crop models encode physiological rules across environments but treat the canopy as a h

Pentraxins, which constitute a family of evolutionarily conserved pattern recognition molecules, are categorized into short and long branches. The long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a key member of the long pentraxin subfamily, while the C-reactive protein and serum amyloid P represent the short pentraxins. All pentraxins share a highly conserved C-terminal motif, an 8-amino acid sequence known as the pentraxin signature. PTX3 can be produced by a wide range of cell types, including immune cells such as dendritic cells, monocytes, and macrophages, as well as various non-immune cells, underscoring its

Platelets constitutively express class B scavenger receptors CD36 and SR-BI, 2 closely related pattern recognition receptors best known for their roles in lipoprotein and lipid metabolism. The biological role of scavenger receptors in platelets is poorly understood. However, in vitro and in vivo data suggest that class B scavenger receptors modulate platelet function and contribute significantly to thrombosis by sensing pathological or physiological ligands, inducing prothrombotic signaling, and increasing platelet reactivity. Platelet CD36 recognizes a novel family of endogenous oxidized chol

A simple technique for estimating the camera displacement from point correspondences in eye-in-hand visual servoing is presented. The idea for providing more accurate results than existing methods consists of taking into account that the point correspondences used during the camera motion correspond to stationary spatial points, hence exploiting additional information. This is done by first estimating the object Euclidean structure and then estimating the camera displacement from this estimate.

The nucleus accumbens (Acb) contains subpopulations of neurons defined by their receptor content and potential involvement in sensorimotor gating and other behaviors that are dysfunctional in schizophrenia. In Acb neurons, the NMDA NR1 (NR1) subunit is coexpressed not only with the dopamine D1 receptor (D1R), but also with the µ-opioid receptor (µ-OR), which mediates certain behaviors that are adversely impacted by schizophrenia. The NMDA-NR1 subunit has been suggested to play a role in the D1R trafficking and behavioral dysfunctions resulting from systemic administration of apomorphine, a D1R

INTRODUCTION: There are no known biological measures that accurately predict future development of psychiatric disorders in individual at-risk adolescents. We investigated whether machine learning and fMRI could help to: 1. differentiate healthy adolescents genetically at-risk for bipolar disorder and other Axis I psychiatric disorders from healthy adolescents at low risk of developing these disorders; 2. identify those healthy genetically at-risk adolescents who were most likely to develop future Axis I disorders.
METHODS: 16 healthy offspring genetically at risk for bipolar disorder and oth

INTRODUCTION: Lung ultrasound (LU) has proven to be the best method for diagnosing surfactant deficiency (Respiratory Distress Syndrome [RDS]) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) failure; experience in Mexico is limited.
METHODS: The objective was to determine the usefulness of a LU program and a lung ultrasound score (LUS) for predicting surfactant need in a perinatal hospital. LUS and FiO2 of patients who received or did not receive surfactant were compared with Mann-Whitney U test. Using LU as the gold standard, FiO2 thresholds were tested using receiver operating characteristic

The complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most frequently used laboratory tests in clinical practice and is often the first abnormal finding that prompts further evaluation. However, its interpretation is often limited to identifying values outside reference ranges, which may lead to both overinterpretation of minor abnormalities and under-recognition of serious disease. The CBC provides a rapid and integrated reflection of hematopoiesis and systemic physiology. Subtle combinations of abnormalities across multiple cell lineages, discordance between indices, and inappropriate marrow response

Obesity is a global health challenge. An increasing number of patients with obesity are admitted to an intensive care unit. Airway management in these patients represents a unique challenge due to significant anatomical and physiological alterations. Increased adipose tissue in the face, cheeks, pharynx, hypopharynx, and neck narrows the upper airway, renders soft tissues more collapsible, and complicates airway management. In addition, the functional residual capacity is reduced, resulting in markedly shortened safe apnea time, contributing to severe hypoxemia during intubation. Non-invasive
