Lifetime poly-victimization and psychopathological symptoms in Mexican adolescents.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research on the impact of poly-victimization on mental health in Mexico. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between poly-victimization and both internalizing and externalizing symptoms, in a community sample of Mexican adolescents. The starting hypothesis of this study was that poly-victimization would be a better predictor of internalizing and externalizing symptoms than individual categories of victimization (conventional crimes, caregiver victimization, peer and sibling victimization, sexual victimization, witnessing victimiz

Parent and Teacher Ratings of Behavioral Executive Functioning for Students With Dyslexia.

Research exploring behavioral ratings of executive functioning (EF) for children and adolescents with dyslexia is scarce, which limits researchers, clinicians, educators, and parents from understanding and best supporting these students at home and/or school. Using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second Edition (BRIEF-2) rating scale to measure participants' EF behaviors in home and school settings, a primary objective of this study was to examine the EF of Spanish children and adolescents with dyslexia (n = 78) and to compare their EF with typically developing (TD) peers

Associations Between Rejection Sensitivity, Aggression, and Victimization: A Meta-Analytic Review.

BACKGROUND: Rejection sensitivity (RS) is a personality disposition characterized by oversensitivity to social rejection; individuals who are sensitive to social rejection tend to anxiously or angrily expect, readily perceive, and overreact to it. The associations between (a) RS and aggression and (b) RS and victimization have been studied in recent years. However, the strength of these associations varied considerably between studies. This review aimed to synthesize the primary literature to improve our insight into these associations. METHOD: A comprehensive literature search yielded 52 stu

Key concepts in consumer and community engagement: a scoping meta-review.

BACKGROUND: Although consumer and community engagement (CCE) in health care is receiving increasing attention, research and practice in this area are hampered by the variability of concepts and terminology commonly employed. This scoping meta-review aims to identify key CCE concepts and examine terminology used to describe them. METHODS: In a scoping meta-review, an extensive list of 47 phrases and 11 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) was used to undertake a comprehensive and systematic search in PubMed Central, Embase, EBM reviews, CINAHL, APAPsycNET, and Scopus. RESULTS: 59 systematic review

Peer support models for people with a history of injecting drug use undertaking assessment and treatment for hepatitis C virus infection.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are the group most affected by HCV; however, treatment uptake has been low. Engagement between PWID and healthcare workers has been characterized by mistrust and discrimination. Peer support for HCV is one way to overcome these barriers. Peer support models for chronic disease management have been successfully applied for other diseases. HCV peer support models have been implemented in various settings, but those that include opioid substitution treatment have been more common. Most models have been either service generated (provider led) or community controlled

Prevalence and horizontal propagation of gonococcal infections among Nigerian children.

The prevalence and mode of spread of gonococcal infections was studied among prepubertal children in Nigeria. Of 16 children with symptoms suggestive of sexually transmissible diseases (STD), 9 (56%) had gonorrhoea, while no causative organism was found in 7. The majority (7; 78%) of the gonococcal isolates produced penicillinase. Three of the cases were by child-to-child transmission, with female peers as the initiators. Prepubertal children should no longer be ignored as propagators of STD.

"Angel dust:" an overview of abuse patterns and prevention strategies.

Adolescent abuse of phencyclidine, also known as "ANGEL DUST" or "PCP," has increased dramatically in the past several years. Phencyclidine can be highly toxic, and efforts should be made to prevent its abuse. The authors advance one model of behavorioral intervention which utilizes peer group counseling to promote learning of practical skills for resisting pressures to use "hard drugs," especially phencyclidine.

Selected volunteer adolescents in adolescent group therapy.

Twenty-one adolescents had therapy in a group containing three volunteer adolescents over a period of ten months. Fifteen adolescents came to five sessions or more. A description of the group shows how many of the group members model their behavior and attitudes on those of the volunteers. It is suggested that using volunteers is a useful method of initiating and maintaining a group of adolescents.

Non-consensual sexting among adolescents from ethnocultural minority backgrounds: the role of native peer pressure, self-control, and sexual preoccupation.

BACKGROUND: The non-consensual dissemination of sexually explicit electronic messages (non-consensual sexting) among adolescents from ethnocultural minority backgrounds is a severe form of digital aggression that remains internationally under-researched. METHOD: Integrating Ecological Systems and Social Cognitive theories, the present study examined the prevalence of non-consensual sexting roles (sending, receiving, and forwarding) and the predictive contribution of perceived native peer pressure (i.e., peers from the Greek majority without a migrant background), self-control, and sexual preo

Understanding Social Influence of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Interplay of Peer Networks and Adolescent Behavior.

Adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) could be influenced by their friends' NSSI and by their own social position within peer networks. However, prior research has examined these effects separately and has primarily focused on middle-to-late adolescence. It remains unclear how friends' NSSI relates to adolescents' NSSI under different social positions and how these effects differ across different age stages. This study examined both the independent and interactive effects of the number of friends engaging in NSSI, the number of claiming friends, and the extent of bridging different peer

Evaluating the dependability of peer assessment in project-based learning for pre-clinical students: a generalizability theory approach.

INTRODUCTION: Peer assessment enables students to evaluate peers, deepening their understanding of course objectives and boosting engagement. However, its dependability, especially in summative contexts, is often questioned. This study examines the dependability of peer assessments, and the optimal number of items and raters needed for a reliable assessment in project-based learning (PtBL). METHODS: In a PtBL class, 95 third-year pre-clinical students, grouped into ten teams, created 5-min videos on cardiovascular lifestyle modifications for the community, followed by a 5-min presentation on

Adolescents' implicit and explicit attitudes toward their peers with genetic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has demonstrated that children lacking knowledge about genetic disorders may have harmful attitudes toward people with disabilities, but disability awareness can successfully modify these attitudes. We explored adolescents' implicit and explicit attitudes toward peers with genetic conditions to determine whether improved genetics/genomics literacy can mitigate the impact of ableism in this population. METHODS: English-speaking adolescents (10-18 years) from British Columbia were invited to complete a Disability Attitudes Implicit Association Test (DA-IAT) and p

Shared Illness and Social Support Within Two HIV-Affected African American Communities.

A key source of resiliency within HIV-affected African American communities is informal social support. Data from dyadic conversations and focus groups were used to address the following research question: What are HIV-positive African Americans' social support experiences within their informal social networks in response to HIV-related problems? Circumstances that exacerbated HIV-related problems included others' fear of contagion, reticence to be involved, judgment and rejection, and disregard for privacy Support from HIV-negative others buffered the impact of problems when others communicat
