The costs of peer ethnic discrimination: Longitudinal associations with negative ethnic identity affect and identity coherence among ethnic minority adolescents.

The present study examined longitudinal associations between perceived peer ethnic discrimination, negative ethnic identity affect, and global identity coherence among ethnic minority adolescents in Italy (n = 280; Mage = 14.29; 59.28% female; 76.42% second-generation). Results indicated negative bidirectional associations between negative ethnic identity affect and global identity coherence. While the associations between peer discrimination and negative ethnic identity affect were bidirectional and positive, the links between peer discrimination and identity coherence were unidirectional and

Protective Effect of Social Support Following Discrimination Varies by Group: Implications for Psychosis Risk Among Asian American, Latine, and White Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination is a risk factor for psychotic symptoms among minoritised individuals. Social support has been shown to be a broad protective factor for stressors like discrimination and for psychosis outcomes. However, it is unclear whether social support equally benefits all groups. METHODS: In this study, 134 young adults identifying as Asian American, Latine, or non-Hispanic White reported on recent experiences of discrimination, perceived social support, and subclinical psychotic and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Distinct moderation effects of social support on the associat

Racial discrimination, body mass index, and insulin resistance: A longitudinal analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine prospective relations of perceived racial discrimination at ages 16-18 with body mass index (BMI) at ages 19-21 and insulin resistance (IR) at ages 25 and 27 among Black youth in the rural South, and to determine whether BMI connected discrimination to IR as a mediator. METHOD: Participants were 315 African American adolescents in rural counties in Georgia who provided data on their perceptions of discrimination during adolescence. BMI was measured during a yearly home visit, and a certified phlebotomist drew a fasting blood sample from which IR was measured. RESULTS: T

Social stressors and inflammatory gene expression in U.S. Chinese immigrants.

OBJECTIVE: Immigrants comprise approximately 14% of the U.S. population and experience increasing rates of chronic disease after migration that are not wholly attributable to behavioral acculturation. The present study examined whether social stressors commonly experienced by immigrants (e.g., acculturative stress, discrimination) are associated with proinflammatory gene expression in a sample of Chinese immigrants residing in the United States. METHOD: Participants (n = 216) in an observational study completed assessments of acculturative stress, perceived discrimination, and social isolatio

Design and psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate nursing students' perceptions of discrimination by nurse educators: a protocol for a mixed-method study.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived discrimination by nurse educators is a harmful phenomenon in nursing education that influences nursing students in both classroom and clinical settings. It is associated with psychological distress, reduced learning outcomes, feelings of hopelessness and higher rates of attrition. There is a need to identify the dimensions of discrimination for developing strategies to promote educational justice. This research aims to develop and test the psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate nursing students' perceptions and experiences of discrimination by nurse educat

Depressed affect and historical loss among North American Indigenous adolescents.

This study reports on the prevalence and correlates of perceived historical loss among 459 North American Indigenous adolescents aged 11-13 years from the northern Midwest of the United States and central Canada. The adolescents reported daily or more thoughts of historical loss at rates similar to their female caretakers. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that our measure of perceived historical loss and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale were separate but related constructs. Regression analysis indicated that, even when controlling for family factors, perceived discri

Discrimination and mental health among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United States.

Health disparities among sexual minority groups, particularly mental health disparities, are well-documented. Numerous studies have demonstrated heightened prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders among lesbian, gay, and bisexual groups as compared with heterosexuals. Some authors posit that these disparities are the result of the stress that prejudice and perceived discrimination can cause. The current study extends previous research by examining the associations between multiple types of discrimination, based on race or ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, and past-year mental he

Weight discrimination and eating disorder symptoms in early adolescence: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Weight discrimination is associated with adverse outcomes, including eating disorder (ED) symptoms, but few longitudinal studies have investigated this relationship in early adolescence. We examined the prospective association of weight discrimination with ED symptoms one year later in early adolescents, and the extent to which this association was moderated by body mass index (BMI) percentile and sex. METHODS: We analyzed prospective data from Year 2 (2018-2020) and Year 3 (2019-2021) of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 9,079). To estimate the associat

Understanding the Drivers of Perceived PrEP Stigma among Indigenous People in the United States.

Previous research has demonstrated that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) stigma serves as a common barrier to PrEP use across racial, ethnic, and sexual minority groups in the United States; however, there is a deficit in research focused on Indigenous populations. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify drivers of PrEP stigma among Indigenous people. A cross-sectional survey was administered to examine PrEP knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to use among Indigenous people in the United States, including PrEP stigma and the following hypothesized drivers: stigma towards

Medical Mistrust and Healthcare Seeking Among Women of Color with Chronic Vulvovaginal Pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic vulvovaginal pain (CVVP), an umbrella term encompassing several gynecological pain conditions (e.g., vulvodynia, vaginismus), has a prevalence rate of 7-8% in the USA and is characterized by considerable diagnostic delay in patient experience research. Furthermore, current research in this area focuses largely on the experiences of white women, while the experiences of women of color are underrepresented. METHOD: In the present cross-sectional study (N = 488), we surveyed women of color (i.e., Asian, Black, and/or Hispanic/Latinx women) with CVVP about their perceptions an

Body Size Discrimination, Family Emotional Climate, and Chronic Health Incidence in Middle Age: A Longitudinal Study.

Body size discrimination has been significantly linked to adverse health outcomes. Although family emotional climate has been shown to influence health outcomes, few studies have tested if various aspects of family emotional climate either buffer or exacerbate chronic disease onset related to size discrimination. Using a subsample of the MIDUS 1 and 2 projects, we conducted a longitudinal analysis to test the relationship between perceived size discrimination, family support, and family strain and likelihood of various adverse outcomes as well as interaction effects between both family support

Predicting high perceived stress in late adolescence: development and validation of a prognostic model.

AIM: Stress levels have increased among adolescents, yet tools for identifying those at high risk remain limited. This study aimed to develop and internally validate a prognostic model estimating the probability of high perceived stress in young adulthood using data collected at age 15. METHODS: Data were from the West Jutland Cohort Study including 2,108 Danish adolescents with complete information on the 4-item Perceived Stress Scale at ages 15 and 18. High stress at age 18 was defined as a total score of 9 or higher. Twenty-three candidate predictors were examined using Least Absolute Shri

Self-stigma and decision about medication use among a sample of Nigerian outpatients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Self-stigma is a common barrier to maintenance therapy and recovery in schizophrenia. We investigated the prevalence of the decision not to use medication as prescribed and describe the multidimensional relationship of self-stigma with such a decision in 370 adults with schizophrenia. METHOD: A multivariate binary logistic regression model was used to examine the relationship between specific aspects of self-stigma (alienation, perceived discrimination, stigma resistance, stereotype endorsement and social withdrawal) and the decision not to take medication, while controlling for ot

Discrimination based on gender identity and decision-making regarding HIV/STI-protected sex, a cross-sectional study among trans and non-binary people in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Trans and non-binary people are often discriminated against. Discrimination has a negative impact on health and may affect sexual health and behavior. We explored the relationship between discrimination based on gender identity and the perceived ability to make decisions about their sex life to feel as protected as desired from HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) among trans and non-binary people in Germany. Secondarily, we assessed whether feeling unable of making HIV/STI-protected sex decisions was associated with behaviors related to increased HIV/STI risk. METHODS: W

Personal Versus Group Experiences of Racism and Risk of Delivering a Small-for-Gestational Age Infant in African American Women: a Life Course Perspective.

The majority of studies investigating the relationship between racism/racial discrimination and birth outcomes have focused on perceived experiences of racism/racial discrimination directed at oneself (personal racism). However, evidence suggests individuals report with greater frequency racism/racial discrimination directed at friends, family members, or other members of their racial/ethnic group (group racism). We examined how much African American (AA) women report lifetime experiences of perceived racism or racial discrimination, both personal and group, varied by maternal age. We also inv

Psychosocial factors predicting severity of depression among treatment-seeking HIV/AIDS patients: A multi-site Nigerian study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression as major psychological sequelea of the HIV/AIDS infection has continued to attract investigation. With few studies in Nigeria, it is unclear whether levels of perceived stigma, sexual risk behaviors, and anticipated discrimination are differentially associated with severity of depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study using a multivariate design investigated the role of stigma, anticipated discrimination, self-esteem, HIV-related factors (e.g., drug use combination, knowledge of duration of HIV diagnosis) and socio demographic factors (e.g., mu
