Associations of perfectionism dimensions with perceived stress and anxiety symptoms among Chinese undergraduates in sport-related majors: a multi-site cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduates in sport-related majors may face overlapping academic, practical, physical-performance, and, for some students, training and competition demands. Perfectionism dimensions may shape how these demands are appraised. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of High Standards, Order, and Discrepancy with perceived stress and anxiety symptoms among Chinese undergraduates in sport-related majors, including cross-sectional indirect associations through empirically supported perceived-stress components. METHODS: A multi-site cross-sectional survey included 705 full-time unde

Self-critical perfectionism, dependency, and symptomatic distress in patients with personality disorder during hospitalization-based psychodynamic treatment: A parallel process growth modeling approach.

There is growing evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy in patients with personality disorder (PD), but very little is known about the factors underlying these effects. Two-polarities models of personality development provide an empirically supported approach to studying therapeutic change. Briefly, these models argue that personality pathology is characterized by an imbalance between development of the capacity for self-definition and for relatedness, with an exaggerated emphasis on issues regarding self-definition and relatedness being expressed in high levels of self-c

Is the road to burnout paved with perfectionism? The prevalence of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder in a clinical longitudinal sample of female patients with stress-related exhaustion.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have investigated the relationship between stress-related mental health problems and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Similarly, little research has focused on the moderating effect of OCPD on recovery in clinical patients with stress-related mental health problems. The general aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of OCPD and the associations between OCPD and level of burnout, anxiety, and depression symptoms, during a 7-years follow-up in a clinical longitudinal sample of female patients with stress-related exhaustion. METHOD: The inclu

The relations between childhood experience of negative parenting practices and nonsuicidal self-injury in Chinese adolescents: The mediating roles of maladaptive perfectionism and rumination.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a highly prevalent and serious public health concern among adolescents worldwide, and family experiences are influential in its development. However, the potential mediating mechanisms underlying the relations between childhood experience of negative parenting practices and NSSI are not fully understood. This study tested a mediating model to examine the roles of maladaptive perfectionism and rumination in these relations. METHODS: A total of 5,619 Chinese adolescents (54.7 % males; mean age = 15.92 years, SD = 0.73) participated in this study and

Experiential Avoidance as a Transdiagnostic Mediator in the Relationship Between Intolerance of Uncertainty, Maladaptive Perfectionism, and Psychiatric Symptoms: Structural and Causal Mediation Analyses in a Clinical Sample.

Anxiety- and depression-related disorders rank among the most prevalent psychological conditions globally. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), perfectionism, and experiential avoidance (EA) are recognized as transdiagnostic factors contributing to the development and maintenance of these emotional disturbances. However, their interplay remains insufficiently understood and has not been examined within a single research design across clinical samples with varying psychiatric diagnoses. Investigating the relationships and clinical significance of these key transdiagnostic processes in the maintenan

The Body of Cognitive and Metacognitive Variables in Eating Disorders: Need of Control, Negative Beliefs about Worry Uncontrollability and Danger, Perfectionism, Self-esteem and Worry.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have described perfectionism and low self-esteem as traits associated with eating disorders (ED). More recently, research has shown the role played by worry, rumination, control and metacognitive beliefs. This paper investigates the role played by cognitive and metacognitive variables in the psychopathological mechanism of eating disorders, assuming that not only perfectionism and low selfesteem but also metacognitive beliefs and processes can discriminate between controls and EDs. METHOD: The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM, the Multidimensional Perfectionism S

When and how perfectionism impedes the brief treatment of depression: further analyses of the National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program.

Perfectionism has previously been identified as having a significant negative impact on therapeutic outcome at termination in the brief (16-week) treatment of depression (S. J. Blatt, D. M. Quinlan, P. A. Pilkonis, & T. Shea, 1995) as measured by the 5 primary outcome measures used in the National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program (TDCRP). The present analyses of other data from the TDCRP indicated that this impact of perfectionism on therapeutic outcome was also found in ratings by therapists, independent clinical evaluators, and the patients an

Association between perfectionism and life satisfaction among a sample of the Lebanese population: The indirect role of social phobia and validation of the Arabic version of the Social Phobia Inventory.

PURPOSE: To assess the psychometric properties of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), and evaluate the indirect effect of social phobia between perfectionism and life satisfaction (LS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study enrolled 683 Lebanese adults (April-May 2021). RESULTS: The confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed the one-factor solution of the SPIN items (Cronbach's alpha = 0.92). Social phobia had an indirect effect in the association between rigid, self-critical, and narcissistic perfectionism and life satisfaction. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The study results confirm the psychomet

Fertility-Related Quality of Life in Men Undergoing Medically Assisted Reproduction During the Pandemic: Perfectionism and Thought Control Beliefs Moderate the Effects of the Type of Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: After a diagnosis of infertility, an increasing number of couples turns to the Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) to achieve a pregnancy. A diagnosis of infertility has a negative impact on the individual's well-being and it can increase the risk of anxious-depressive symptoms, stress, and low self-esteem. Data associated with infertility-related Quality of Life (QoL) are lacking in men. Little is known about men's experience of infertility and its treatments during the pandemic. Among the variables potentially associated with infertility-related QoL, the role of obsessive belief

The advantage of excellencism: Role of mindfulness in attenuating burnout.

Why do some high-achieving students thrive while others experience burnout? This study investigated this paradox by examining perfectionism and excellencism, two forms of high personal standards, and the role of mindfulness. We approached a private university and collected data from 598 students. Confirmatory factor analyses provided evidence for the discriminant validity of perfectionism, excellencism, mindfulness, and burnout. The regression models revealed that mindfulness was associated with lower burnout levels. Excellencism was positively associated with mindfulness. Perfectionism was ne

Perfectionistic Children and Their Parents: Is There Room for an Intergenerational Transmission? A Study of a Clinical Sample of Italian Children and Their Parents.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and Internalizing (ID) and Externalizing Disorders (ED) in children needs to be better understood, along with the intergenerational transmission of these traits from parents to children. The present work aimed to share light on both these issues. METHOD: 39 children with ID, 19 with ED, and their parents were recruited*. The Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Big Five Inventory, the Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale, and the Hierarchical Personality Inventory for Children were used. Examining a psychosocial interactive model of binge eating and vomiting in women with bulimia nervosa and subthreshold bulimia nervosa.

The current study tested a psychosocial interactive model of perfectionism, self-efficacy, and weight/shape concern within a sample of women with clinically significant bulimic symptoms, examining how different dimensions of perfectionism operated in the model. Individuals with bulimia nervosa (full diagnostic criteria or subthreshold) completed measures of bulimic symptoms, multidimensional perfectionism, self-efficacy, and weight/shape concern. Among those who were actively binge eating (n=180), weight/shape concern was associated with binge eating frequency in the context of high perfection

Psychological distress and the frequency of perfectionistic thinking.

Five studies tested the hypotheses that there are individual differences in the frequency of automatic thoughts involving perfectionism and that these thoughts are associated with psychological distress. Research with the Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory (PCI) established that this new measure has adequate psychometric properties, and high PCI scorers tend to spontaneously report perfectionistic thoughts in naturalistic situations. Additional research confirmed that frequent perfectionism thoughts account for unique variance in distress, over and above variance predicted by standard measures

Relationship between parental perfectionism and child's disordered eating: mediating role of parental distress and validation of the arabic version of the eating disorders examination questionnaire-short-parent version (EDE-QS-P).

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are an emerging global health crisis, with significant implications for both physical and psychological well-being. Disordered eating behaviors in childhood can serve as precursors to more severe eating disorders if left untreated. Previous literature evidences a strong association between perfectionism, as well as parental control and eating disorders, highlighting perfectionism as a significant factor in the development and maintenance of ED symptoms. Early intervention during this critical developmental period is essential to address these risks, prevent the pro
