Pharmacological manipulation of anxiety and male rat sexual behavior.

Several anxiolytic/anxiogenic treatments were evaluated on male rat sexual behavior. The anxiolytic drug diazepam (1.0 mg/kg) inhibited copulatory behavior as indicated by an increase in the number of mounts preceding ejaculation, prolongation of the ejaculation latency and the postejaculatory interval. These changes were not accompanied by alterations in motor coordination as tested on a treadmill apparatus. A lower dose of diazepam (0.5 mg/kg) did not affect the sexual behavior. The anxiogenic drug Zk 39106 (2 and 4 mg/kg) facilitated the copulatory behavior by reducing the number of intromi

Future prospects for tissue engineered lung transplantation: decellularization and recellularization-based whole lung regeneration.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the efficacy of a single 15 mg preoperative sublingual dose of melatonin in reducing anxiety as the primary outcome, and its effects on psychomotor performance, postoperative sleep quality, and early post-traumatic stress symptoms as secondary outcomes in patients undergoing mandibular third molar surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients were randomly allocated to receive either melatonin (n=24) or an identical placebo (n=24) sublingually 45 minutes before surgery. Anxiety was assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and a Visual Anal

Factor structure of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factor structure of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents (LSAS-CA). The LSAS-CA was administered to 225 children and adolescents as a component of various clinical studies. In addition, other measures of psychopathology and impairment were administered to a subgroup of the sample. Confirmatory factor analyses of the social interaction and performance subscales for the anxiety and avoidance ratings yielded poor fit indices. Exploratory factor analysis supported a two-factor solution with a higher order factor for the LSAS-

Relationships between mood states and performances in reaction time, psychomotor ability, and mental efficiency during a 31-day gradual decompression in a hypobaric chamber from sea level to 8848 m equivalent altitude.

High altitude is characterized by hypoxic environmental conditions that may induce a set of pathological disorders, known as acute mountain sickness. In addition to the physiological symptoms, exposure to high altitude may also produce adverse changes in motor skills, mental efficiency, and mood states, including anxiety. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between mood states, including anxiety, and performance changes in reaction time, psychomotor ability and mental efficiency in eight climbers participating in the 'Everest-Comex 97', a 31-day gradual decompression in a h

Video feedback with peer ratings in naturalistic anxiety-provoking situations for social anxiety disorder: Preliminary report.

The present study aimed to examine how video feedback can affect perceived performance and anticipatory anxiety in various naturalistic social anxiety-provoking situations among clinical patients diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and to examine predictors that might influence response to video feedback. Participants were 52 consecutive patients with DSM-IV SAD who participated in a group-based CBT program. Our results demonstrated that video feedback was associated with a decrease in the underestimation of own performance as well as the perception of feared outcomes. Moreover, antic

Social anxiety and peer relations in early adolescence: behavioral and cognitive factors.

This study investigated factors associated with social anxiety during early adolescence using multiple informants, including self and peer perspectives, teacher ratings, and direct observations. Negative social performance expectations, maladaptive coping strategies, and social skill deficits were examined as correlates of social anxiety and mediators linking social anxiety with poor peer relations. Participants were 84 middle school students (47 girls, 37 boys) over-sampled for elevated social anxiety. Analyses revealed correlations linking social anxiety with decreased peer acceptance and in

The Impact of Group Feedback on Self-Perceptions Following Videotape Exposure in CBT for Social Anxiety Disorder.

Video feedback following social anxiety exposures improves self-perceptions. Clinical studies have not examined whether feedback from group members has incremental benefit beyond that of viewing the tape itself. Sixty-seven individuals with social anxiety disorder completed videotaped exposure during group based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). After participants viewed their taped exposure, group members and therapists gave feedback. Participants completed ratings of anxiety and performance before and after taping their exposure, after viewing the video themselves, and after receiving group

Negative self-imagery among adolescents with social phobia: a test of an adult model of the disorder.

Based on findings from the adult literature, this study examined the role of negative self-images (NSI) in social phobia during adolescence. NSI was manipulated among 21 nonphobic (IMAG) adolescents (M age = 14.05 years, SD = 1.56) during two social tasks. Self and observer-rated anxiety and performance as well as co-occurring cognition were compared to 21 adolescents with social phobia (SOC) and 21 control adolescents not instructed to use self-imagery. Few differences in observer-rated anxiety or performance were found between the IMAG and control groups, whereas SOC adolescents were consist

Social anxiety, anxious self-preoccupation, and recall of self-relevant information.

Theoretical and empirical efforts concerning cognitive processes associated with anxiety have typically emphasized either cognitive deficits (i.e., reduced learning, memory, and task performance) or cognitive excesses (i.e., increased self-focused, ruminative thought). To date, evidence of these two types of cognitive processes has primarily been based on different types of sources (i.e., performance measures vs. self-reports), which precludes direct comparisons of the extent to which cognitive deficits and/or excesses characterize anxiety states. The present study attempted to directly compar

Role of the valuation of nervousness in cortisol responses to psychosocial stress task and task performance in European American and East Asian students.

How people perceive and value negative affective states is associated with physiological responses to stressful events and moderates the association between negative feelings and physiological and behavioral outcomes. However, previous studies on valuation of negative affective states have been conducted mostly in Western cultures. Different cultural backgrounds shape how people view negative emotions as well as how people attend to internal emotional states, which may change the effects of valuing negative emotions. The present study thus examined whether valuation of nervousness was associat

Intraocular Pressure as an Indicator of the Level of Induced Anxiety in Basketball.

SIGNIFICANCE: Our data demonstrate that intraocular pressure (IOP) is sensitive to anxiety manipulation in sport scenarios, specifically in a basketball free throw task. The present outcomes may be of special relevance because of its practical advantages for the objective control of athletes' anxiety levels. PURPOSE: Athletes experience high levels of anxiety during sport competition, and IOP has demonstrated to reflect autonomous nervous system changes during mentally demanding situations. We tested whether different levels of induced anxiety during basketball free throw shooting alter IOP.

The synergistic effects of anxiety and cerebral hypoperfusion on cognitive dysfunction in older adults with cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is associated with neurocognitive outcomes. The effect of anxiety on brain perfusion in a CVD population has yet to be examined, and no study has investigated the interactive effects of anxiety and cerebral perfusion on cognition. METHODS: A total of 55 older adults with CVD completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and underwent arterial spin labeling to quantify cortical perfusion and thickness. Participants were administered the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Ne

Vaccines and vaccination strategies against human cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Anxiety disorders are a social problem due to their prevalence and consequences. It is crucial to explore the influence of anxiety on cognitive processes. In this study we recorded EEG activity from 73 subjects (35 patients, 38 controls, matched for age and education) during performance of the Continuous Attention Task. We used low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) for evaluation of mechanisms of impaired cognitive performance in anxiety disorders. Analysis showed that patients with anxiety disorders committed more errors than the controls, had a short latency of P300 and higher a

A Psychophysiological Case Study of Orchestra Conductors.

The psychological and physiological effects of performance were investigated in two professional orchestral conductors, with data collected prior to, during, and after a rehearsal and a public performance. The participants were given a battery of psychological self-report tests (anxiety, dissociation, health inventory, fantasy proneness, shame, and flow). Ambulatory physiological monitoring (Vivometric LifeShirt® system) was conducted during both a rehearsal and public performance to gather information about the autonomic nervous system and heart rate variability (HRV). One conductor had a his

Assessing cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa using eye tracking: A registered report.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive flexibility research in anorexia nervosa (AN) has primarily focused on group differences between clinical and control participants, but research in the general population utilizing the mixed pro- anti-saccade flexibility task has demonstrated individual differences in trait anxiety are a determinant of switching performance, and switching impairments are more pronounced for keypress than saccadic (eye-movement) responses. The aim of the current research is to explore trait anxiety and differences in saccadic and keypress responding as potential determinants of performance

The impact of coping style on gaze duration.

The understanding of individual differences in response to threat (e.g., attentional bias) is important to better understand the development of anxiety disorders. Previous studies revealed only a small attentional bias in high-anxious (HA) subjects. One explanation for this finding may be the assumption that all HA-subjects show a constant attentional bias. Current models distinguish HA-subjects depending on their level of tolerance for uncertainty and for arousal. These models assume that only HA-subjects with intolerance for uncertainty but tolerance for arousal ("sensitizers") show an atten

Investigating a critical evaluation tendency in social anxiety.

Models of social phobia suggest that socially anxious individuals have critical evaluation expectancies, expecting others to be inherently critical in their appraisal of performance. One potential source for these expectancies is generalization or projection of an individual's own critical evaluation tendencies. We recruited 89 students, informing them that they would be asked to deliver an impromptu speech. Participants were shown three short pre-recorded speeches and asked to rate the performance of the speaker in each. Participants were also asked to rate how well they thought they would pe
