10-year follow-up of calcifying odontogenic cyst in the periapical region of vital maxillary central incisor.

INTRODUCTION: Radiographic images may lead to misinterpretations of lesions of endodontic and nonendodontic origin. This report describes a case of a 10-year follow-up of a calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) in the periapical region of a vital maxillary central incisor in a 9-year-old boy. METHODS: The patient revealed a history of a swelling in the periapical area of tooth #9. The patient denied any dental trauma or history of pain. Clinical examination revealed no mobility, but there was discrete discomfort when horizontal pressure was applied. Pulp vitality was present in all maxillary ante

Cells isolated from human periapical cysts express mesenchymal stem cell-like properties.

We provide a detailed description of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from human periapical cysts, which we have termed hPCy-MSCs. These cells have a fibroblast-like shape and adhere to tissue culture plastic surfaces. hPCy-MSCs possess high proliferative potential and self-renewal capacity properties. We characterised the immunophenotype of hPCy-MSCs (CD73(+), CD90(+), CD105(+), CD13(+), CD29(+), CD44(+), CD45(-), STRO-1(+), CD146(+)) by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. hPCy-MSCs possess the potential to differentiate into osteoblast- and adipocyte-like cells in vitro. Surgical Management of Radicular Cyst With the Application of a Natural Platelet Concentrate: A Case Report.

Traumatic dental injuries usually involve the dentoalveolar region, and they readily affect the teeth and their surrounding soft and hard tissues. The common sequelae of traumatic dental injuries lead to pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis along with cystic changes. The current case report describes the surgical management of a radicular cyst in the periapical region of maxillary incisors and highlights the efficacy of natural platelet concentrate [platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)] used for postoperative healing. A 38-year-old male patient presented to the department with pain and mild swelling

Treatment of a human transosseous mandibular defect by guided bone regeneration.

The treatment of through-and-through human periapical lesions by barrier membrane techniques has not been reported in the periodontal literature. However, periodontists frequently perform this treatment. The authors present a case that demonstrates radiopacity after regeneration surgery of a human periapical transosseous mandibular defect, suggesting local bone regeneration. The surgical technique performed in this case was based on the principles of guided bone regeneration using a demineralized freeze-dried bone membrane (DFDBM). The bone membrane acted as an efficient barrier that excluded

Differential Healing Patterns of Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis Following Nonsurgical Endodontic Therapy: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Based Case Series.

This case series evaluated the differential healing patterns of maxillary sinus mucosa and periapical bone following nonsurgical root canal treatment for odontogenic maxillary sinusitis to propose a prognostic perspective based on distinct radiographic features. Ten cases of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis managed by primary nonsurgical root canal treatment or retreatment were categorized into 4 radiographic patterns based on periapical and sinus lesions. Clinical symptoms were recorded, and radiographic healing was assessed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at baseline and during fol

Comparative assessment of periapical radiography and CBCT imaging for radiodiagnostics in the posterior maxilla.

Close proximity of the maxillary roots and the sinus floor makes a dental disease a probable cause of maxillary sinusitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography in defining the topographic relationship of maxillary teeth to the sinus floor and detecting apical periodontitis and other odontogenic causes of the maxillary sinusitis. Out of 145 dental records from subjects (mean age 52 years, range 20-75 years; 89 females) referred to the Oral Imaging Centre, KU Leuven, periapical and CBCT images of the posterior maxilla were

Combined endodontic and surgical treatment of a three-rooted maxillary first premolar.

A case is reported in which endodontic treatment of a maxillary first premolar was complicated by the fact that the tooth had three roots. One of the roots was completely calcified and therefore could not be negotiated with endodontic files. There was a large periapical lesion associated with the tooth and this was surgically removed. During the surgical procedure a retrograde cavity was prepared on the calcified root using ultrasonic instruments and this was filled using Super EBA cement. Twelve months later the tooth was asymptomatic and the periapical tissues had completely healed.

Tertiary Lymphoid Structures Are Related to Inflammatory Progression and Bone Loss in Human Apical Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Bone loss is strongly associated with the immunologic milieu in apical periodontitis (AP). Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are organized lymphoid cell aggregates that form in nonlymphoid tissues under persistent inflammatory circumstances. To date, there has been no relevant report of TLSs in periapical lesions. This work aimed to investigate the formation and potential function of TLSs in AP. METHODS: Tissues from human apical lesions (n = 61) and healthy oral mucosa (n = 5) were collected. Immunohistochemistry and multiplex immunofluorescence were used to detect the format
