Evaluation of serum and gingival crevicular fluid levels of Vitamin D binding protein in subjects with clinically healthy periodontium and chronic periodontitis: A clinico bio-chemical study.

BACKGROUND: Advances in oral and periodontal disease diagnostic research are moving towards methods wherein periodontal risk can be identified and quantified by objective measures such as bio-markers. Given the roles of vitamin D binding protein (DBP) in modulating the immune response and in the transport of vitamin D, it is hypothesised that quantitative changes of vitamin DBP are associated with periodontal disease. AIM: The aim of the current study is to measure DBP levels in serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of patients with generalised chronic periodontitis, in comparison to heal

Alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase levels in saliva and serum of patients with healthy periodontium, gingivitis, and periodontitis before and after scaling with root planing: A clinico-biochemical study.

UNLABELLED: Periodontitis is commonly diagnosed based on clinical parameters. However, the analysis of a few unique biomarkers of the disease process present in the saliva and blood can further assist the estimation of the rate of disease progression. AIM: The present study attempted to correlate the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and acid phosphatase (ACP) levels in saliva and serum between patients with healthy periodontium, gingivitis, and chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted in 135 subjects between 20 and 55 years of age. The subjects were divided int

Periodontal health and gingival diseases and conditions on an intact and a reduced periodontium: Consensus report of workgroup 1 of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions.

Periodontal health is defined by absence of clinically detectable inflammation. There is a biological level of immune surveillance that is consistent with clinical gingival health and homeostasis. Clinical gingival health may be found in a periodontium that is intact, i.e. without clinical attachment loss or bone loss, and on a reduced periodontium in either a non-periodontitis patient (e.g. in patients with some form of gingival recession or following crown lengthening surgery) or in a patient with a history of periodontitis who is currently periodontally stable. Clinical gingival health can

Bacterial Colonization of Orthodontic Devices (Molar Bands, Nance Buttons, and Acrylic Plates) and Its Impact on the Marginal Periodontium and Palatal Fibromucosa in Teenagers: A Cross-Sectional Clinical-Microbiological Study.

Background: Orthodontic auxiliaries can create plaque-retentive niches that inflame adjacent soft tissues. We compared bacterial colonization on molar bands, Nance buttons, and acrylic plates and assessed associated periodontal and palatal tissue responses in adolescents. Methods: In a cross-sectional study (n = 128; 10-17 years), clinical indices (Plaque Index, Gingival Index, bleeding on probing, probing depth) were recorded at device-influenced teeth. Palatal fibromucosa under palate-contacting devices was graded 0-3 (0 = none, 1 = mild/diffuse, 2 = moderate/confluent, 3 = marked with papil

Influence of probiotics on the periodontium, the oral microbiota and the immune response during orthodontic treatment in adolescent and adult patients (ProMB Trial): study protocol for a prospective, double-blind, controlled, randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is often necessary to correct malocclusions in adolescence or adulthood. However, oral hygiene is complicated by appliances, and prior studies indicate that they may trigger oral inflammation and dysbiosis of the oral microbiota, especially during the first 3 months after insertion, and, thus, may present a risk for inflammatory oral diseases. In recent periodontal therapeutic studies, probiotics have been applied to improve clinical parameters and reduce local inflammation. However, limited knowledge exists concerning the effects of prob

Advanced biomaterials for periodontal tissue regeneration.

The periodontium is a suitable target for regenerative intervention, since it does not functionally restore itself after disease. Importantly, the limited regeneration capacity of the periodontium could be improved with the development of novel biomaterials and therapeutic strategies. Of note, the regenerative potential of the periodontium depends not only on its tissue-specific architecture and function, but also on its ability to reconstruct distinct tissues and tissue interfaces, suggesting that the advancement of tissue engineering approaches can ultimately offer new perspectives to promot

[Periodontal alterations in patients with hepatic cirrhosis. Note II].

Following up the evolution of a series of 85 patients with hepatic cirrhosis, a number of alterations concerning the whole maxillo-facial area and especially the marginal periodontium in a proportion of 93%, were noticed. A direct relation between the status of the marginal periodontium and the degree of hepatic affection could be established. The clinical alterations at the level of periodontium were in keeping with the histological and biochemical ones, fact resulting from the complementary examinations (amino-acids, G.D.H. and L.D.H. emzymes and seric proteins determinations) performed at t

The molecular and cellular effects of ageing on the periodontal ligament.

AIM: Many in vitro studies have investigated age-related biological changes in cells comprising the periodontium but the basic question of whether the periodontium can maintain its integrity with age remains unanswered. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand how, in the absence of disease, advancing age impacts the structure of the periodontium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 4, 10, 25, and 50-week-old mice were examined using histology and immunohistochemical analyses for cell proliferation, cell turnover, collagen quantity and quality, osteogenic markers, bone turnover, and cytokine expre

Oral piercing and gingival recession: review of the literature and a case report.

A young adult developed severe gingival recessions and radiographic signs of trauma to the periodontium after wearing a tongue barbell and a lip stud. Oral body art (piercing) can be hazardous to the periodontium; nevertheless, patients inclined to such practices do not see them as health hazards and are very reluctant to remove them.

Gli1+ Periodontal Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Periodontitis.

Periodontal mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a crucial role in maintaining periodontium homeostasis and in tissue repair. However, little is known about how periodontal MSCs in vivo respond under periodontal disease conditions, posing a challenge for periodontium tissue regeneration. In this study, Gli1 was used as a periodontal MSC marker and combined with a Gli1-cre ERT2 mouse model for lineage tracing to investigate periodontal MSC fate in an induced periodontitis model. Our findings show significant changes in the number and contribution of Gli1+ MSCs within the inflamed periodontium. Th

[The implant/tissue interface in a clinical perspective].

For a proper insight in the implant/tissue interface of permucosal oral implants it is good to refer to the tooth/periodontium interface. Although there are evident differences such as the lack of a periodontal ligament with its possibilities for eruption and migration and elaborate neural endings, it seems that classical periodontal parameters are the yardstick to discriminate failure from success of oral implants. Long cone radiographs and mobility assessment seem the only available clinical tools to detect a scar tissue interposition. On the other hand, their discrimination power is insuffi
