We report four cases of acute epiglottitis with a peritonsillar abscess originating from the inferior pole of the palatine tonsil. All cases were male, and presented with acute onset of sore throat and dysphagia. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed swollen epiglottis and swelling at the base of tongue along the edge of the epiglottis in all cases. Computed tomography (CT) revealed the position and extent of a peritonsillar abscess. Surgical drainage was not performed. Abscesses decreased in size following intravenous antibiotics and corticosteroids. We surmise that inflammatory exudates extending w

OBJECTIVE: Peritonsillar abscess is the most common deep neck infection and still provides a challenge to care givers in terms of diagnosis and treatment in the pediatric population. This study reviews our experience over the years 2004-2007 at the Soroka University Medical Center in the southern district of Israel in treating children with peritonsillar abscess. We compared our results with data regarding peritonsillar abscess in adults.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 126 children diagnosed and proved to have a peritonsillar abscess. Data regarding: age, sex, ethnicity

In the United Kingdom, patients with a peritonsillar abscess are usually managed as inpatients. However, studies in other countries have shown successful management of these patients as outpatients. We designed an evidence based protocol for the management of patients with a peritonsillar abscess. Diagnosis was by aspiration of pus. Initial treatment was with analgesia, 1.2 g co-amoxiclav and 4 mg dexamethasone intravenously. Data were collected prospectively over 11 months on the management of all patients who had been confirmed by aspiration of pus to have a peritonsillar abscess. Four of th

The objective of this study was to describe the incidence and microbiology of peritonsillar abscesses (PTA) and to study the clinical history with special reference to primary care management of these patients. We performed a retrospective study of hospital records to determine the incidence of PTA in 2000-2006, and a prospective study of consecutive PTA patients to study the microbiology of PTA, the clinical history and previous management in primary care of these patients. The incidence of PTA varied between 19 and 37/100,000 per y in the y 2000-2006. In total, 89 patients were included in t

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Peritonsillar abscess is a common problem, but some aspects of diagnosis and management remain controversial. We review the recent literature on peritonsillar abscess.
RECENT FINDINGS: Intraoral ultrasound can be a helpful diagnostic tool for peritonsillar abscess. For management, needle aspiration, incision and drainage, and quinsy tonsillectomy all yield successful results. Recent reviews have still not established that one treatment is consistently preferred. A randomized, placebo-controlled trail found that the use of intravenous steroids seems to reduce many symptoms,

We noticed a seemingly high prevalence of penicillin allergy in patients who had been diagnosed with peritonsillar abscess (PTA) at our institution. To formally investigate this observation, we reviewed the emergency room (ER) records of 118 patients who had presented between Jan. 1, 1995, and Dec. 31, 1999, with suspected PTA. A diagnosis of PTA was confirmed by the presence of pus on incision and drainage in 78 of these patients (66.1%). The remaining 40 patients (33.9%) were diagnosed with peritonsillar cellulitis (PTC). Of the 78 patients with confirmed PTA, 13 (16.7%) self-reported an all

OBJECTIVE: To review the presentation and management of peritonsillar (PTA) and parapharyngeal space (PPSA) abscesses in older adults and compare this with the usual presentation and management in the younger patient.
STUDY DESIGN: An 18-year retrospective review at a tertiary care hospital.
METHODS: The patient database was searched by using the diagnosis codes for PTA and PPSA. The search included inpatient and outpatient visits of patients 50 years of age and older from 1983 to 2001. The charts were reviewed, and data regarding presentation, management, and outcome were recorded. Comparis

We reviewed the records of 724 patients diagnosed with peritonsillar abscess who had been admitted to our hospital between January 1988 and December 1999. We analyzed their clinical features, disease course, and treatment. The male:female ratio was 3:1, and approximately two-thirds of these patients were between 20 and 39 years of age. The most common aerobic bacteria cultured from patients' pus were alpha-hemolytic streptococci. Severe complications---including deep neck infections and mediastinitis--were seen in 13 patients (1.8%). This complication rate suggests that patients with peritonsi

Peritonsillar abscess, a complication of tonsillitis, is not uncommon. The usual treatment consists of needle aspiration or surgical drainage and antibiotic treatment. Tonsillectomy may be used in the management of this condition, either at the time of diagnosis or after an interval period. Severe complications of peritonsillar abscess are rare. Synergistic necrotizing cellulitis is a fulminant infection associated with spread along fascial plains, necrosis of connective tissue and muscle, and high mortality. It is usually otondogenic in origin in the cervicofacial area and occurs in debilitat

The clinical course of 19 consecutive children treated for peritonsillar abscess (PTA), in the Chaim Sheba Medical Center, between 1988-1992 was retrospectively reviewed. The abscess was drained through an incision (12 children) and by needle aspiration (7 children), under local (11 children) or general (8 children) anesthesia. One child suffered from recurrent bouts of tonsillitis after the abscess resolved and eventually underwent tonsillectomy. Two others, with a pre-PTA history of recurrent tonsillitis (T+) underwent interval tonsillectomy. Recurrent PTA did not develop in any of the 16 no

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is the most frequent complication of acute tonsillitis requiring surgical intervention. Debate continues concerning optimal therapy in terms of patient morbidity and cost-effectiveness. A retrospective study was performed on 45 tonsillectomies for PTA in military personnel from December 1986 through December 1988. Twenty-three quinsy (abscess) tonsillectomies and 22 interval tonsillectomies were identified. Parameters studied were age, sex, abscess location, interval prior to operation, blood loss, operative time, operative experience, and combined hospital and conv

In order to compare the efficacy of permucosal needle drainage with that of incision and drainage in the outpatient management of peritonsillar abscess, 52 patients with aspiration-proven peritonsillar abscess were entered into a randomized, prospective protocol. A symptomatic scale scoring system was employed to evaluate treatment results. In the needle drainage group, 92% (22/24) were cured with a single aspiration. Ninety-three percent (26/28) of the patients in the incision and drainage group were cured on the initial attempt. The remainder of the patients in both groups were cured with a

A retrospective study was performed on 93 abscesses in children admitted for diagnosis and treatment at Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital, University Hospitals of Cleveland, during a 15-year period from 1972 to 1987. Forty-five percent were peritonsillar, 20.5% superficial neck, 21.5% submandibular-submental, 9.6% retropharyngeal, and 3.4% parapharyngeal. All four complications resolved without sequelae. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment were of paramount importance to achieve a low complication rate and a short hospital stay. Bacteriology and antibiotic therapy, as well as surgical t

38 children aged 1-15 years treated for peritonsillar abscess (PTA) between 1976 and 1986 have been reviewed. The patients were divided into those with a history of recurrent tonsillitis prior to developing PTA (T+) (10 patients = 26.3%) and those without such history (T-) (28 patients = 73.4%). 19 patients were surgically drained, 2 abscesses ruptured spontaneously, 2 patients were treated by repeated needle aspirations and 15 patients were treated by medication only. Neither the pre-PTA history (T+ versus T-) nor the mode of treatment during the acute event showed any significant differences

Two hundred ninety patients treated for peritonsillar abscess (PTA) between 1970 and 1982 were reviewed. The patients were divided into those with a history of recurrent tonsillitis prior to developing PTA (72 patients, 25%), and those without (218 patients, 75%). The patients in the first group had four times more recurrences than those in the second group (40% versus 9.6%). Patients older than 40 years were found to have a lower incidence of throat infections than younger patients, and no PTA recurrences were observed. Neither subsequent tonsillitis nor recurrent PTA was observed among 72 pa

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the single systemic use of corticosteroid following drainage procedure in patients with peritonsillar abscess (PTA).
METHODS: This retrospective case-control trial included 32 patients with the diagnosis of PTA between December 2013 and January 2016 in our clinic. Patients were divided into two groups based on the approaches of two authors for the treatment after PTA drainage. The study group included the patients treated with single dose systemic corticosteroid after PTA drainage. Other patients who had no corticosteroid treatment were in the control g

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is the most common otorhinolaryngological infection, requiring management at the special healthcare level. The microbiological findings vary due to geographical, etiological, and methodological factors. This study aimed to identify the bacterial species of PTAs by using a novel polymerase chain reaction (PCR)- and microarray-based assay, and to find causative cofactors among patients with different pathogens. We determined the bacterial findings of aspirates of pus prospectively collected from 180 PTA patients. Samples were pretreated prior to nucleic acid extractio
