Associations Between Maladaptive and Normal-Range Personality Traits and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Features.

Personality provides a general structure for variation in psychopathology, but several issues involving associations between personality traits and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remain poorly understood. These issues include differences in associations across normal-range and maladaptive traits, differences across OCD features, and possible non-linear associations. In this study, we estimated linear and non-linear associations between personality traits and OCD features in 350 Iranian adults aged 18-70 (mean 32.2 ± 9.6). Participants completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), the

Brief cognitive behavioural therapy with male adolescent offenders in open custody or on probation: an evaluation of management of anger.

A 6-wk. cognitive behavioural program administered to 24 adolescent male offenders assigned to open custody and 5 to probation showed no mean differences on the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory. Significant correlations were found for the personality measures with pretreatment and posttreatment scores on the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory.

Convergent and discriminant validity of the Five Factor Form.

The current study tests the convergent and discriminant validity of a modified version of the Five Factor Model Rating Form (FFMRF), a one-page, brief measure of the five-factor model. The Five Factor Form (FFF) explicitly identifies maladaptive variants for both poles of each of the 30 facets of the FFMRF. The purpose of the current study was to test empirically whether this modified version still provides a valid assessment of the FFM, as well as to compare its validity as a measure of the FFM to other brief FFM measures. Two independent samples of 510 and 330 community adults were sampled,

Are alexithymia and schizoid personality disorder synonymous diagnoses?

Relationships among alexithymia, personality disorders, and higher-order psychopathological and interpersonal dimensions were examined in 199 college students and a close relative of each. Alexithymia, the difficulty to express and identify emotions, was measured by the Observer Alexithymia Scale (OAS; [Haviland, M. G., Warren, W. L., & Riggs, M. L. (2000). An observer scale to measure alexithymia. Psychosomatics, 41, 385-392]), which was completed by each student's relative. Each student completed three self-report measures: the Coolidge Axis II Inventory (CATI; [Coolidge, F. L. (2000). Cooli

Personality and Sleep Evaluation of Patients with Tinnitus in Japan.

In Japan, there have been no examinations of tinnitus with respect to personality traits, and only a few studies have investigated sleep disorders in tinnitus. Understanding the association between these can aid in selecting and developing effective treatment options for patients with tinnitus. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between tinnitus severity, personality, and sleep disorders, in patients with chronic tinnitus in Japan. We retrospectively evaluated the personality factors of 56 patients presenting with tinnitus using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), which examines

Personality characteristics of patients with temporomandibular disorders: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

One hundred ten patients complaining of nondental orofacial pain of more than 3 months' duration were psychologically evaluated with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Four distinct personality profiles were found: psychophysiologic reaction, in 52% of the patients; depressed reaction, in 11% of the patients; defensive reaction, in 12% of the patients; and "no diagnosis" (normal), in 24% of the patients. These results indicate that chronic temporomandibular pain patients present personality characteristics that are similar to those of other chronic pain patients according to the

Clinical types in a normal population: concurrent and construct validity.

Examined the relationship between personality and psychopathology through the use of the Multivariate Personality Inventory (MPI) (N = 100). The concurrent validity study compared the factors of the MPI with those of the Lazare-Klerman Personality Inventory, which was developed for a pathological population. Factor analysis of these two inventories yielded three factors that correspond to the three predicted personality styles: Hysteric, Compulsive, and Character Disorder. In the second part of this study the construct validity of these scales was examined. Results showed significant differenc

OBJECTIVE: The study addresses the question whether, as often assumed, the symptoms of borderline personality disorders occur more frequently in transsexuals or not. METHODS: We examined 164 transsexuals. The subjects completed the following questionnaires: The Borderline-Personality Inventory (BPI), the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI) and the Questionnaire for Assessment of One's Own Body (FbeK). RESULTS: In 80 % of all the examined transsexuals, there was evidence of symptoms of neither a borderline personality disorder nor of other personality disorders. If borderline symptoms occurr

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) as a treatment outcome measure for psychiatric inpatients.

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) is a 175-item inventory designed to assess both clinical symptomatology and underlying, more enduring personality traits and syndromes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the MCMI personality scales evidenced greater stability over time than did the MCMI symptom scales. The MCMI was administered to 151 consecutively admitted inpatients at an acute care, private psychiatric hospital. Patients were administered the MCMI shortly after admission and shortly before discharge. Results indicated that the personality scales evidenced grea

An Empirical Evaluation of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in Later Life.

Personality disorders (PDs) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) are conceptualized as distinct clinical syndromes. However, debate persists about the clinical utility of this categorical model, with many researchers supporting a dimensional model that focuses on pathological personality traits and personality dysfunction. This model was published in Section III of DSM-5 and named the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). This study evaluated the AMPD by examining relationships between traits and dysfunction with traditional categorical PD construct

Experimental Manipulation of the BFI-2, IPIP-NEO-120, and the IPC-5.

Research assessing the relationship of the five-factor model (FFM) to personality disorder symptomatology has generally been confirmatory, with three exceptions. The exceptions have been failures to confirm associations of conscientiousness with the obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, agreeableness with dependent, and openness with schizotypal. Haigler and Widiger demonstrated empirically years ago that this was occurring because the predominant FFM measure at that time, the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised, does not include a sufficient representation of maladaptive variants of the re

Social impairment and personality disorder features among older adults: An application of the circumplex model.

The interpersonal circumplex is a model that places interpersonal problems along two axes (communion and agency), resulting in eight theoretically derived patterns. Application of the circumplex to older adults is poorly understood. Subsequently, this study examined relationships between the interpersonal circumplex and personality disorder (PD) features among older adults, since social impairments are core components of PDs. Two models of PDs were examined: the traditional model of 10 PDs and the Alternative Model of PDs (AMPD) with its personality functioning and pathological personality tra

Differences in personality and patterns of recidivism between early starters and other serious male offenders.

In this study, the differences in personality and patterns of recidivism were compared between individuals with an early incidence of offending ("early starters") and their later-starting counterparts ("later starters"). Results indicated that early starters were significantly different from later starters in several personality characteristics, as measured by the California Personality Inventory (CPI) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Specifically, early starters scored lower on the responsibility and socialization scales of the CPI and higher on the paranoia, schizo
