Impaired transmission in the corticospinal tract and gait disability in spinal cord injured persons.

Rehabilitation following spinal cord injury is likely to depend on recovery of corticospinal systems. Here we investigate whether transmission in the corticospinal tract may explain foot drop (inability to dorsiflex ankle) in persons with spinal cord lesion. The study was performed in 24 persons with incomplete spinal cord lesion (C1 to L1) and 15 healthy controls. Coherence in the 10- to 20-Hz frequency band between paired tibialis anterior muscle (TA) electromyographic recordings obtained in the swing phase of walking, which was taken as a measure of motor unit synchronization. It was signif

[Health reasons for work disability among persons before going into early retirement].

BACKGROUND: The demographic situation in Poland shows a progressive ageing of its population and a concomitant decrease in the number of people of the productive age. The identification of health problems in older groups of people of the productive age is essential for gaining better knowledge of measures to be taken in order to extend the period of occupational activity in this groups of workers. The aim of the study was to define the health status of persons going into early retirement on the basis of their sickness absence history covering the five preceding years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, reading disability, and personality disorders in a prison population.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has long been recognized in children, and for many the disorder persists into adulthood. There is a growing concern that the adults with ADHD who have the least favorable outcome, are among those who end up in prison. The aim of this study was to assess childhood ADHD and its persistence into adulthood among a representative sample of Norwegian prison inmates, as well as personality disorders and reading difficulties, which in previous studies have been linked to ADHD. The results indicate that persistent ADHD is very common among prison inmates.

Disability Certification Under the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 in Northeast India: An Institutional Analysis of Trends, Service Utilization, and Trauma-Related Locomotor Disability Burden.

Background  Disability certification is a critical mechanism enabling persons with disabilities to access healthcare, rehabilitation, social welfare measures, and government entitlements under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. Despite increasing global recognition of disability as a public health priority, data from Northeast India remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate temporal trends in disability certification applications, service utilization patterns, demographic characteristics, and trauma-related locomotor disability burden at a tertiary care center in Nort

Interrelationships Among Personality Traits, Depressive Symptoms, Childhood Abuse, and Social Disability.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits and childhood abuse were found to be associated with depressive symptoms and with each other. However, no previous study has elucidated the directional interrelationship among those factors in a clinical population of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study sought to construct networks to explicate the directional interrelationship among those factors and social disability, identify the most central factor, and explore potentially existing causality chains implied by the directed association chains. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed

Personalized deep neural networks reveal mechanisms of math learning disabilities in children.

Learning disabilities affect a substantial proportion of children worldwide, with far-reaching consequences for their academic, professional, and personal lives. Here we develop digital twins-biologically plausible personalized deep neural networks (pDNNs)-to investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying learning disabilities in children. Our pDNN reproduces behavioral and neural activity patterns observed in affected children, including lower performance accuracy, slower learning rates, neural hyperexcitability, and reduced neural differentiation of numerical problems. Crucially, p

Personal support networks of young people with and without intellectual disability. A comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that the personal support networks of people with intellectual disability are smaller and less diverse than those of people without intellectual disability. This article aims to compare the characteristics of the personal networks of young people with and without intellectual disability. METHOD: The Personal Network Analysis (McCarty, Revista Hispana Para El Análisis de Redes Sociales, 2010, 19, 242-271) was applied. The participants comprised 51 young people aged between 13 and 19, of whom 27 had an intellectual disability. The Egonet programme was used to c

A comparative case study of the accommodation of students with disabilities in online and in-person degree programs.

Fully online degree programs are an increasingly important part of the higher education ecosystem. Among the many challenges raised by the growth of fully online courses and degree programs is the question: Are institutions providing online students with disabilities accommodations that are comparable to those provided to students in traditional in-person degree programs? To explore this question, we compared students in a fully online biology degree program to students in the equivalent in-person degree program at a large research university. For each group, we assessed the frequency with whi

Training professional caregivers to screen for report of cognitive changes in persons with intellectual disability.

INTRODUCTION: By age 60, 60% of adults with Down syndrome (DS) have dementia. Detecting dementia in persons with intellectual disability (ID) can be challenging because their underlying cognitive impairment can confound presentation of dementia symptoms and because adults with ID may have difficulty reporting symptoms. The National Task Group Early Detection Screen for Dementia (NTG-EDSD) was developed to aid detection of report of cognitive impairment in adults with ID. We implemented an educational curriculum using the NTG-EDSD and evaluated the impact of the intervention on professional car

A comparison of the energy costs with use of different types of manual wheelchair in disabled persons.

The energy cost of physical activity is a well-documented field of research both in non-disabled subjects and in subjects with physical disabilities, in particular spinal cord lesions. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate the energy cost and subjective fatigue in disabled persons who make daily use of a manual wheelchair by comparing three different types of wheelchair (standard, lightweight and ultra-light) in order to obtain indices useful for prescribing the most effective and appropriate wheelchairaid for the individual patient. The study was carried out on 18 patients affe

Assistive technology for persons with profound intellectual disability: a european survey on attitudes and beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Persons with profound intellectual disability (PID) are mostly not able to use assistive technology (AT) independently. Caregivers play an important mediating role in implementing AT in the daily life of persons with PID. Both first-order barriers, extrinsic to caregivers, and second-order barriers, intrinsic to caregivers, influence the attitudes and behaviors of caregivers with regard to AT-use. It could be asked if increased knowledge on and experience with AT may impact the effect of first- and second-order barriers. This study investigated how knowledge and experience influenc

Needs for mobility devices, home modifications and personal assistance among Canadians with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities often require assistive devices, modifications to their home environment, and physical assistance to facilitate mobility. This study examines self-reported met and unmet needs of people with disabilities who use wheeled mobility devices, compared with non-users. DATA AND METHODS: The 2012 Canadian Survey on Disability followed up with 45,442 individuals who reported a disability on the 2011 National Household Survey, and obtained a 75% response rate. Descriptive statistics with variance estimates and 95% confidence intervals were used to compare wheeled mo

Access to healthcare for disabled persons. How are blind people reached by HIV services?

UNLABELLED: Disabled people are overlooked and marginalised globally. There is a lack of information on blind people and HIV-related services and it is unclear how HIV-services target blind people in a sub-Saharan urban setting. OBJECTIVE: To explore how blind people are reached by HIV-services in Kampala, Uganda. METHOD: A purposeful sample of blind people and seeing healthcare workers were interviewed, and data on their opinions and experiences were collected. The data were analysed by qualitative content analysis, with a focus on manifest content. RESULTS: Three categories emerged from t

Do persons with intellectual disability and limited verbal capacities respond to trauma treatment?

BACKGROUND: There is not one case report of successful trauma treatment with the use of an evidence-based treatment method in people with substantially limited verbal capacities. This paper assessed the applicability of eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) in two clients with moderate ID, serious behavioural problems, and histories of negative life events. METHOD: The 8-phase protocol of EMDR, a first-line treatment for psychological trauma, was applied. RESULTS: In both cases, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms decreased in a total of only 6 and 5 sessions, r

The impact of living arrangements and deinstitutionalisation in the health status of persons with intellectual disability in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Despite progress in the process of deinstitutionalisation, very little is known about the health conditions of people with intellectual disability (PWID) who live in large institutions and PWID living in small residential services, family homes or independent living within the community. Furthermore, there are no international comparison studies at European level of the health status and health risk factors of PWID living in fully staffed residential services with formal support and care compared with those living in unstaffed family homes or independent houses with no formal suppo

Internal consistency and factor structure of personality disorders in a forensic intellectual disability sample.

BACKGROUND: The publication of the DSM-III (American Psychiatric Association (APA), 1980) prompted a significant increase in interest and research on personality disorder (PD), and the concept has subsequently been incorporated into mental health legislation in the developed world. Despite this, such research on people with intellectual disability (ID) has been sporadic, with widely varying results. The present study addresses a number of criticisms directed at previous research. METHOD: DSM-IV (APA, 2000) diagnoses of PD were made on 164 participants with ID on the basis of four independent

Outbreak of tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) dermatitis in a home for disabled persons.

Five mentally handicapped individuals living in a home for disabled persons in Southern Germany were seen in our outpatient department with pruritic, red papules predominantly located in groups on the upper extremities, neck, upper trunk and face. Over several weeks 40 inhabitants and 5 caretakers were affected by the same rash. Inspection of their home and the sheds nearby disclosed infestation with rat populations and mites. Finally the diagnosis of tropical rat mite dermatitis was made by the identification of the arthropod Ornithonyssus bacoti or so-called tropical rat mite. The patients w

Sequential processing deficits of reading disabled persons is independent of inter-stimulus interval.

Developmental dyslexia is a language-based learning disability with frequently associated non-linguistic sensory deficits that have been the basis of various perception-based theories. It remains an open question whether the underlying deficit in dyslexia is a low level impairment that causes speech and orthographic perception deficits that in turn impedes higher phonological and reading processes, or a high level impairment that affects both perceptual and reading related skills. We investigated by means of contrast detection thresholds two low-level theories of developmental dyslexia, the ma
