[Using complementary therapy with a hemodialysis patient with colon cancer and a sense of hopelessness].

Hemodialysis patients usually have a sense of hopelessness. This can affect their physical, mental and spiritual health, and can even be life- threatening. This article discusses a nursing experience involving a dialysis patient who also suffered from cancer had and a sense of hopelessness due to the distress caused by the two severe illnesses. The author assessed the patient by means of Roy's theory during the nursing period (5/7/2005-6/18/2005). Data were collected through physical assessments, interviews, observation of interaction with family members and a medical history review. The patie

[Neurasthenia and thymasthenia].

The term of depression applies to two syndromes at least; one is associated with a reduction in interests, activities and with a withdrawal; the other consists of a moral pain, a pessimism, a guilty feeling, an irritability. In each case the depressive mood corresponds to the subjective state. A first survey concerning 3,000 outpatients in general practice allowed us to identify 16.5 of depressed subjects, with 3% showing a pure painful syndrome, 7% showing a syndrome that we described as thymasthenia, and 6% showing the two syndromes (this last group consists probably of major depressive stat

Associations between hopelessness, negative thinking styles, and depression in Chinese adolescents: a large-sample cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Drawing on Self-Determination Theory and the Hopelessness Theory of Depression, this study reconceptualized hopelessness along the dimensions of three basic psychological needs and meaningfulness, broadened negative thinking styles to include rumination and irrational beliefs, and systematically examined their associations with depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescent students. METHODS: We analyzed 17,561 students and assessed hopelessness and negative thinking styles through self-developed questionnaires, the reliability and validity of which have been verified. Depression was m

An investigation of the interaction of trait repetitive negative thinking and neuroticism on brain activity during negative self-referential processing: a cross-sectional fMRI study.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and neuroticism are two of the most prominent transdiagnostic risk factors for internalizing disorders. Previous research highlighted a complex relationship between neuroticism and RNT. However, no study has yet examined their interaction at the neural level. Trait RNT and neuroticism were assessed in a sample of 126 healthy participants, followed by a fMRI task designed to elicit RNT. Linear models were employed to examine the interaction between trait RNT and neuroticism and main effects of RNT on brain changes. No significant interaction between trait RNT

Sleep-specific repetitive negative thinking processes and prenatal insomnia symptoms: A naturalistic follow-up study from mid- to late-pregnancy.

Insomnia symptoms are highly prevalent during pregnancy; therefore, identifying modifiable risk markers is important for risk prediction and early intervention. This study aimed to examine the role of sleep-specific rumination and sleep-specific worry in prenatal insomnia symptoms. A total of 859 married pregnant women without history of psychiatric illnesses (mean [standard deviation] age, 30.15 [3.86] years; 593 [69.0%] with a bachelor's degree or above) were enrolled from the obstetrical outpatient departments of two tertiary comprehensive hospitals in Shandong, China, who completed assessm

Psychometric Properties of the Swedish Version of the Brief Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ-10): An Internet-Based Study on Degrees of Affective Symptoms and Levels of Distress.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is reported in a wide variety of emotional disorders, although it is most often associated with either depression or anxiety disorders, assessed as symptoms of rumination and worry. Early detection of indicators for RNT across disorders is needed. To this end we explored the psychometric properties of a transdiagnostic measure, i.e., the Swedish version of the brief Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ-10), in adults (n = 674, age: 18 years or older). METHODS: Participants completed an online battery of questionnaires measuring RNT, anxiety,

The Anticipated Regret Scale (ARS): Initial Validation of a Self-Report Measure of Proneness Toward Anticipated Regret.

Anticipated regret represents expectations of experiencing regret due to action or inaction. Despite its relevance to negative affective states, such as worry, there remains no published multiitem self-report measure of general proneness toward anticipated regret. This study provides data on psychometric properties of the developed Anticipated Regret Scale (ARS). A sample of 811 respondents was used to examine structural validity, internal consistency, convergent validity, concurrent validity, and incremental concurrently validity. [Care pathway to diagnosis in fibromyalgia and inflammatory rheumatic diseases: A patient-centered approach using a comparative mixed-methods study].

BACKGROUND: Many doctors have a complicated relationship with patients with fibromyalgia (FM), whereas they feel more comfortable with patients with well-defined clinico-biological illnesses. The aim of the study was to compare the care pathways as experienced by patients with FM or those facing well-defined rheumatic diseases. METHODS: Consecutive participants diagnosed with FM, spondyloarthritis (SpA), or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were prospectively recruited from a tertiary outpatient center. Utilizing a semi-structured guide, participants were interviewed. A quantitative analysis compared

Differences Between Men and Women in Chronic Scratching: A Psychodermatologic Study in Lichen Simplex Chronicus.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic scratching is common to many skin disorders. Being a female and presenting a high level of psychopathology are risk factors for chronic scratching. Yet, it is unclear why. Certain personality characteristics that are more prevalent in women are also known to influence emotional states (i.e. emotional tension). OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to explore whether these personality styles might help understand why gender and emotional distress are associated with scratching. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We compared the personality patterns of 103 patients (69.9% women) diagnosed

The role of concreteness in repetitive negative thinking: Temporal dynamics and the predictive value for depression throughout psychological treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is an important transdiagnostic process involved in the development and maintenance of depression. Evidence suggests that maladaptive RNT is characterised by reduced concreteness. However, the temporal relationship between concreteness of RNT and depressive symptoms, as well as changes in concreteness during psychological treatment, remain unclear. Therefore, the current study investigated (a) whether momentary RNT concreteness explains variance in the prediction of momentary depressive symptoms beyond momentary RNT, (b) whether momentary RNT co

Transdiagnostic assessment of repetitive negative thinking and responses to positive affect: Structure and predictive utility for depression, anxiety, and mania symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a cognitive process that is repetitive, passive, relatively uncontrollable, and focused on negative content, and is elevated in emotional disorders including depression and anxiety disorders. Repetitive positive thinking is associated with bipolar disorder symptoms. The unique contributions of positive versus negative repetitive thinking to emotional symptoms are unknown. The first aim of this study was to use confirmatory factor analyses to evaluate the psychometrics of two transdiagnostic measures of RNT, the Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire

Negative expectations in major depression: Association with brain structure and course of illness.

BACKGROUND: Negative expectations towards the future are frequently observed in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and linked to less favourable outcomes like worse treatment response and suicidal behaviours. Despite clinical significance, the neurobiological underpinnings of negative expectations remain largely unexplored. METHODS: This study compared structural MRI morphometric gray matter volume (SPM/CAT12) and two-year longitudinal clinical data between two groups of patients with DSM-IV-TR MDD (total N = 330), matched for age, sex, severity of depressive symptoms (HAMD), and g

Default mode network subsystem alterations in bipolar disorder during major depressive episode.

BACKGROUND: Default mode network (DMN) has been widely reported to be altered in bipolar disorder during major depressive episode (BDD). Recent studies supported the idea that DMN is not an unitary system, but composed of smaller and distinct functional subsystems. The current study aimed to investigate the abnormal functional connectivity (FC) patterns of DMN subsystems in BDD. METHODS: Seed-based FC method was applied to extract 11 DMN components in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired from 40 patients with BDD and 63 demographically matched healthy controls. Distress and emotional well-being in breast cancer patients prior to radiotherapy: an expectancy-based model.

Understanding precursors to distress and emotional well-being (EWB) experienced in anticipation of radiotherapy would facilitate the ability to intervene with this emotional upset (i.e. higher distress, lower EWB). Thus, this study tested an expectancy-based model for explaining emotional upset in breast cancer patients prior to radiotherapy. Women affected by breast cancer (N = 106) were recruited and participants completed questionnaires prior to commencing radiotherapy. Structural equation modelling was used to test a cross-sectional model, which assessed the ability of dispositional optimi
