Separation methods for antiviral phosphorus-containing drugs.

Among antiviral drugs, phosphorus-containing compounds, foscarnet and cidofovir, present adverse effects including renal toxicity. Since their main therapeutic target is the treatment of CMV retinitis, which needs lifelong maintenance therapy, accurate analytical methods are required for drug monitoring. According to the high hydrophilic property of the two compounds, ion pair reversed-phase HPLC methods were proposed for their separation in drug formulations and biological samples. Their lack of UV absorption at wavelengths above 205 nm does not allow the use of this detection technique for b

Does strict phosphorus control precipitate renal osteomalacia?

Hyperphosphatemia leads to the development of osteitis fibrosa in patients with chronic renal failure. In contrast, crippling osteomalacia may appear in uremic patients who are hypophosphatemic or aluminum intoxicated or who undergo total or subtotal parathyroidectomy. Thus, strict phosphorus control by use of aluminum-containing gels may ameliorate renal osteitis fibrosa, but may potentiate the development of osteomalacia. To evaluate this possibility, we compared the bone histologies of 10 chronic renal hemodialysis patients who consistently maintained predialysis phosphorus levels between 4

Acute yellow phosphorus poisoning. "Smoking stool syndrome".

Three cases of acute phosphorus poisoning are reported. The source of this poison was a rodenticide, which may be in more common use presently because of the increasing resistance of rodents to warfarin derivatives. The safest method of managing poisoning from this highly toxic substance is prevention. Two of the patients had a history of previous medicine overdose.

Dietary phosphorus source reprograms the kidney-intestine axis to dictate calcium-phosphorus efficiency and egg production in aging hens.

BACKGROUND: The decline in egg production in aging hens poses a significant challenge to sustainable poultry production. Given that evidence suggests the phosphorus source affects late‑lay performance, we tested the hypothesis that the dietary phosphorus source is a decisive regulator sustaining performance by reprogramming systemic mineral homeostasis. Using a systems biology approach, we analyzed the coordinated expression of eleven key mineral transporter genes across the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and kidney of hens fed dicalcium phosphate (DCP) or tricalcium phosphate (TCP). RESULTS: Duri

Lanthanum carbonate lowers serum phosphorus without altering body phosphorus burden in maintenance peritoneal dialysis patients: a randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Many studies show that intestinal phosphate binders reduce serum phosphorus concentrations in hyperphosphatemic patients with chronic kidney failure. To our knowledge, there are virtually no studies of the effect of these binders on fecal phosphate or body phosphate. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the hypothesis that phosphate binders increase fecal phosphate and reduce body phosphorus burden. METHODS: Seven adult patients undergoing maintenance peritoneal dialysis underwent full metabolic balance studies for phosphorus in a research ward while they ate a constant phosphorus die

Decolouration of H2SO4 leachate from phosphorus-saturated alum sludge using H2O2 and advanced oxidation processes in phosphorus recovery strategy.

As a part of attempt for phosphorus (P) recovery from P-saturated alum sludge, which was used as a low-cost P-adsorbent in treatment reed bed for wastewater treatment, decolouration of H(2)SO(4) leachate obtained from previous experiment, possessing a great deal of P, aluminum and red-brown coloured materials (RBCMs), by using H(2)O(2) and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) was investigated. The use of H(2)O(2) and AOPs in the forms of Fenton (H(2)O(2)/Fe(2 +)) and photo-Fenton (UV/H(2)O(2)/Fe(2 +)) were tested. The changes in colour and total organic carbon (TOC) were taken place as a result

Effect of high phytase levels on growth performance and calcium and phosphorus metabolism in broilers fed a non-inorganic phosphorus diet.

The effects of high phytase levels on growth performance and calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) metabolism in broilers fed non-inorganic P diets were investigated. A total of 600 one-day-old broilers were assigned to either a control diet or a non-inorganic P diet supplemented with one of two commercial phytases (P1 and P2) at 1,000 (NP, normal level of phytase) or 10,000 FTU/kg (HP, high level of phytase). Compared with the control group, HP treatments had comparable feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio, whereas NP supplementation reduced the parameters, particularly during 22

Internal loading of phosphorus in streams described by a Sediment-Water Exchange Model for Phosphorus (SWEMP): From lab to field scale.

The reaction of phosphorus (P) between sediments and water in streams strongly affects the surface water P concentrations. A new reactive transport model (SWEMP: Sediment-Water Exchange Model for Phosphorus) was developed to describe redox dependent P sorption in the sediment and vertical diffusive transport of solutes to the overlying stream. The model parameters were independently obtained to first predict P release in ten different sediment-water batch systems and in two flumes. Input parameters are the degree of P saturation of the sediment, its organic matter content, dissolved oxygen (DO

Use of a Phosphorus Points Education Program to Maintain Normal Serum Phosphorus in Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease: A Case Report.

A 14-year-old male, with chronic kidney disease stage 4 (glomerular filtration rate 20 mL/min/1.73 m2) secondary to reflux nephropathy required dietary modification with evidence of renal osteodystrophy, presented with elevated serum phosphorus and parathyroid hormone. He was educated using a novel phosphorus point system where 1 point is equivalent to ∼50 mg of phosphorus. Dietary counseling was provided by a pediatric renal dietitian on phosphorus content of foods the patient typically consumed and converted to point system for daily tracking. The family reported limiting daily phosphorus po

Transformation of phosphorus and relevant intracellular compounds by a phosphorus-accumulating enrichment culture in the presence of both the electron acceptor and electron donor.

This study was conducted to obtain a better insight into the metabolic behavior of denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms relative to the transformations of relevant intracellular compounds as well as phosphorus and nitrate for enhanced biological phosphorus removal under different combinations of electron acceptor (oxygen or nitrate) and electron donor (acetate). Under anoxic conditions, the amount of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) produced per acetate taken up considerably increased with the increasing amount of nitrate reduced whereas the amounts of nitrate reduced and phosphorus released

BIOMETRY OF CALCIUM, INORGANIC PHOSPHORUS, CHOLESTEROL, AND LIPOID PHOSPHORUS IN THE BLOOD OF RABBITS : III. INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF LIGHT ENVIRONMENT.

Experiments are reported in which it was shown that the calcium, inorganic phosphorus, cholesterol, and lecithin in the blood of normal rabbits were influenced by 4 types of light environment. The results of the experiments seem to warrant the following conclusions: 1. Animals exposed to the ultra-violet light for a brief period each day give results which are diametrical to those obtained for animals living in total darkness. 2. The results obtained for animals exposed to the Cooper Hewitt light and for those living in the open laboratory are somewhat similar but occupy a position between tho

Phosphorus recovery from the liquid phase of anaerobic digestate using biochar derived from iron-rich sludge: A potential phosphorus fertilizer.

A novel technique for phosphorus recovery from the liquid phase of anaerobic digestate was developed using biochar derived from iron-rich sludge (dewatered sludge conditioned with Fenton's reagent). The biochar pyrolyzed from iron-rich sludge at a low temperature of 300 °C (referred to as Fe-300 biochar) showed a better phosphorus (P) adsorption capacity (most of orthophosphate and pyrophosphate) than biochars pyrolyzed at other higher temperatures of 500-900 °C, with the maximum P adsorption capacity of up to 1.843 mg g-1 for the liquid phase of anaerobic digestate. Adsorption isotherms study

A comprehensive investigation to the fate of phosphorus in full-scale wastewater treatment plants using aluminum salts for enhanced phosphorus removal.

This study investigated the fate of phosphorus (P) in 8 full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai, China, in which both biological nutrient removal and aluminum-based chemical phosphorus removal were used. The results showed that 83.8-98.9 % P was transferred to the sludge in the 8 WWTPs by both chemical and biological reactions. P speciation analysis indicated that chemical P precipitates accounted for 84.3 % in the activated sludge, of which crystalline AlPO4 and amorphous iron‑phosphorus compounds (FePs) were the main components. Sludge with more water-soluble and

Phosphorus content of muscle tissue and muscle function in dairy cows fed a phosphorus-deficient diet during the transition period.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency and hypophosphatemia are believed to be associated with muscle function disturbances in dairy cows, particularly around parturition. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary P deprivation during late gestation and early lactation on muscle P homeostasis and muscle function in periparturient dairy cows. Thirty-six multiparous dairy cows in late gestation were randomly assigned either to undergo dietary P depletion or to be offered a diet with adequate P content from 4 wk before to 4 wk after parturition. Phosphorus-deficient rations for dry an

Enhancing efficiency and economics of phosphorus recovery process by customizing the product based on sidestream characteristics - an alternative phosphorus recovery strategy.

The enhanced biological phosphorus removal process makes the phosphorus recovery feasible from the dewatering streams of biological sludge. The physicochemical properties of these sidestreams, as an input to a crystallizer, are different before and after anaerobic digestion. In this study, phosphorus recovery by calcium phosphate is proposed for pre-digestion sidestreams and by struvite precipitation for post-digestion sidestreams. The thermodynamic modeling followed by experimental tests was performed to evaluate the recovery efficiency and product properties of struvite and calcium phosphate

Anthracene as a Launchpad for a Phosphinidene Sulfide and for Generation of a Phosphorus-Sulfur Material Having the Composition P2S, a Vulcanized Red Phosphorus That Is Yellow.

Thermolysis of a pair of dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene compounds is shown to lead to differing behaviors: phosphinidene sulfide release and formation of amorphous P2S. These compounds, tBuP(S)A (1, A = C14H10 or anthracene; 59% isol. yield) and HP(S)A (2; 63%), are available through thionation of tBuPA and the new secondary phosphine HPA (5), prepared from Me2NPA and DIBAL-H in 50% yield. Phosphinidene sulfide [ tBuP═S] transfer is shown to proceed efficiently from 1 to 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene to form Diels-Alder product 3 with a zero-order dependence on diene.
