Glottal adjustment for regulating vocal intensity. An experimental study.

Living canine larynx was insufflated from the transected trachea with and without contractions of the lateral cricoarytenoid, cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles, in order to study the control mechanism of vocal intensity at the glottal level. The contractions of the lateral cricoarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles were simulated with mechanical retraction, while the thyroarytenoid muscle was contracted with electrical stimulation. The vocal intensity (SPL), subglottal pressure and mean flow rate were measured simultaneously, and the aerodynamic power (pressure multiplied by flow rate) and

Effect of discothèque environment on epileptic children.

A free-field study of 22 epileptic children, selected on the basis of past electroencephalographic abnormality, identified a group who exhibited a significant increase in epileptiform discharge rate on electroencephalography in a discothèque environment (p less than 0.05). Laboratory investigations showed that these children were activated by a wide range of stimuli, including intermittent photic stimulation and exercise. The response to exercise was a good predictor of a child's electroencephalographic response in a discothèque. The findings suggest that most epileptic children are not partic

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of repeated vibratory stimulation to muscles related to hand functions on dexterity, strength, and sensory function in patients with chronic stroke. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 10 stroke patients with hemiplegia participated in this study. They were divided into two groups: a) Experimental and b) Control, with five randomly selected subjects for each group. The experimental group received vibratory stimulation, while the control group received the traditional physical therapy. Both interventions were performed for 30 minutes

Pitfalls and challenges when assessing the depth of hypnosis during general anaesthesia by clinical signs and electronic indices.

The objective of this article was to review the present methods used for validating the depth of hypnosis. We introduce three concepts, the real depth of hypnosis (DHreal), the observed depth of hypnosis (DHobs), and the electronic indices of depth of hypnosis (DHel-ind). The DHreal is the real state of hypnosis that the patient has in a given moment during the general anaesthesia. The DHobs is the subjective assessment of the anaesthesiologist based on clinical signs. The DHel-ind is any estimation of the depth of hypnosis given by an electronic device. The three entities DHreal, DHobs and DH

Cortical output modulation after rapid repetitive movements.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to evaluate changes in motor cortex excitability after rapid repetitive movements in five healthy subjects aged 23-30 years, by considering the amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) at rest and after one minute of maximal frequency repetitive abduction-adduction movements of the thumb. In addition, M and F waves were evaluated by stimulating the median nerve at the wrist. All of the examined subjects showed a clear modification in post-exercise MEP amplitudes, with a mean maximal reduction of 50-60% in comparison with basal values and complete r

Delayed drinking in response to electrical and thermal stimulation of the medial forebrain.

Water intake in response to electrical and thermal stimulation of the medial forebrain was studied in the goat. When the frontal wall of the third cerebral ventricle was included in a field of bipolar electrical stimulation a dipsogenic response was obtained after discontinuation of the stimulation. Release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) was apparently also elicited. The water intake was roughtly proportional to the amount of current which had been applied during the stimulation period. Water consumption in response to stimulation attenuated the dipsogenic effect of subsequent stimulation, as d

[Electrical stimulation therapy and its effects on the general activity of motor impaired cerebral palsied children; a comparative study of the Bobath physiotherapy and its combination with the Hufschmidt electrical stimulation therapy (author's transl)].

The purpose of this study was to answer the following questions: (1) Is it more effective to treat spastic cerebral palsy with the Hufschmidt electrical stimulation therapy combined with the Bobath neuro-development treatment or only with the Bobath therapy? (2) Can a general increase in activity be obtained by the electrotherapeutic muscle stimulation? A test group (combined Hufschmidt/Bobath therapy) and a control group (Bobath), both consisting of 10 subjects, were observed for four months. The duration of observation was divided into two four months treatment periods with a rest interval o

Mechanical sensitization, increased axonal excitability, and spontaneous activity in C-nociceptors after ultraviolet B irradiation in pig skin.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation induces hyperalgesia in human and animal pain models. We investigated mechanical sensitization, increase in axonal excitability, and spontaneous activity in different C-nociceptor classes after UVB in pig skin. We focused on units with receptive fields covering both irradiated and nonirradiated skin allowing intraindividual comparisons. Thirty-five pigs were irradiated in a chessboard pattern, and extracellular single-fibre recordings were obtained 10 to 28 hours later (152 fibers). Units from the contralateral hind limb served as a control (n = 112). Irradiated

In Vivo Documentation of Stimulus Velocity Tuning of Mechanically Induced Reflex Cough.

In order to clear airways and lungs defensive reflexes are provoked rather by the dynamic phase of mechanical stimulus. It is speculated that provocation of defensive response depends not only on stimulus duration but also on stimulus velocity. Fourteen adult rabbits were anaesthetized and tracheotomized. Mechanical stimulus was provoked by a mechanical probe introduced through the tracheotomy and rotated by a small electrical motor using a rotational velocity of 40 rpm/s and 20 rpm/s. Threshold, incidence and intensity of cough reflex (CR) were analyzed for each animal. Statistical comparison

The Anticipation and Perception of Affective Touch in Women with and Recovered from Anorexia Nervosa.

Disruptions in reward processing and anhedonia have long been observed in Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Interoceptive deficits have also been observed in AN, including reduced tactile pleasure. However, the extent to which this tactile anhedonia is specifically liked to an impairment in a specialised, interoceptive C-tactile system originating at the periphery, or a more top-down mechanism in the processing of tactile pleasantness remains debated. Here, we investigated differences between patients with and recovered from AN (RAN) and healthy controls (HC) in the perception of pleasantness of touch de

Functional assessment of toad parotoid macroglands: a study based on poison replacement after mechanical compression.

Toads have a pair of parotoid macroglands behind the eyes that secrete poison used in passive defence against predators. These macroglands are composed of juxtaposed alveoli, each one bearing a syncytial gland, all connected to the exterior by ducts. When the parotoids are bitten, the poison is expelled on the predator oral mucosa in the form of jets, causing several pharmacological actions. After poison release, the empty secretory syncytia immediately collapse in the interior of their respective alveoli and gradually start refilling. After parotoid manual compression, simulating a predator's

Pupillary light reflex in panic disorder. A trial using audiovisual stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Although many previous studies reported abnormalities of autonomic function in patients with panic disorder (PD), almost all targets in those studies primarily focused on cardiovascular autonomic functions. In the present study, we determined whether PD patients exhibited abnormalities in the pupillary autonomic nervous system (ANS). METHODS: Before and after audiovisual stimulation (AS), which induced mental stress through exposure to video images of high stress experiences, such as driving motor vehicles, the pupillary light reflex (PLR) was measured by infrared pupillometer in

Mechanical loading stimulates dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) expression in osteocytes in vivo.

Dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) was originally postulated to be dentin specific. Further analysis showed that DMP1 is also expressed in mature cartilage and bone. In bone tissue, DMP1 is expressed predominantly in late osteoblasts and osteocytes. DMP1 belongs to the SIBLING (Small Integrin Binding Ligand N-linked Glycoprotein) family of cellular matrix proteins that also includes osteopontin, bone sialoprotein, dentin sialophosphoprotein, and others. In this study, we examined the effect of mechanical loading on expression of DMP1 mRNA and DMP1 protein in alveolar bone in the mouse tooth moveme

A model of otolith stimulation.

A new model of otolithic stimulation by linear acceleration is presented and compared to previous models, based upon anatomical evidence and on the ability of normal subjects to sense the direction of a linear acceleration vector acting in the coronal plane (roll-tilt perception). There are two basic methods of generating roll-tilt stimuli: 1) tilt-chairs either inside or outside a centrifuge and 2) fixed-chair centrifuges. The present model is based on consideration of the probable otoconial displacement produced by these two different methods of stimulation and the model incorporates a major

[Apneic laryngeal chemoreflex and naloxone].

The apneic laryngeal chemoreflex (QRL), elicited by water on the vocal cords and by mechanical stimulation (MRL) has been compared in dog. Both stimuli cause apnea, bradycardia, hypotension and constriction of the glottis. In QRL apnea predominates white in MRL bradycardia is more intense. All the components of the response decrease with naloxone at a 400 micrograms X kg-1 doses, suggesting that the reflex inhibition depends on endogenous opioids located in the respiratory centre.

Experiments on the mechanism of Ménière attacks.

The pattern of response decline following semicircular canal stimulation corresponds to a mechanical process. This process is the elastic recoil of the hairs of the sensory cells. The response decline is the same, whether the endolymph-cupula system is patent or mechanically maintained in a displaced position. The role of the bending of the entire cupula as the principle factor is excluded for the response and its decline. Repeated endolymph displacements immediately after each decline of response always result in an equal response and its decline. This rules out the depletion of a chemical me
