Male reproductive proteomes provide basis for studying gene products and its involvement or regulation in sperm physiology. Here, a comparative study between these proteomes was performed to find potential proteins and functions associated with human sperm maturation. Seven reproductive proteomes associated with human sperm physiology were integrated. Gene ontology analysis were performed using DAVID and Panther tools to determine enriched functions. Total of 270 proteins overlapped between epididymal, prostatic milieu and sperm proteome were thought to be candidate proteins involved in sperm

This commentary links early pregnancy milestones (rescue of the corpus luteum, the luteal-placental shift, and blocking of the spiral arteries) with the pattern of gestation-specific pregnancy loss in humans. The objective is to describe the pattern and present an adaptive hypothesis: that high first trimester pregnancy loss results from selection to reduce the risk of maternal morbidity and mortality associated with human delivery. Specific questions within the broad framework of this hypothesis can be addressed with research in comparative physiology and endocrinology.

Sexual differences in physiology are widely regarded as potential proximate mechanisms that underlie sex differences in mortality, life history and disease risk of vertebrates. However, little is known about the causes of sex-specific variation in physiology. Sexual selection and parental workload are two key components suggested to play a role. Theory predicts that, within males, species with stronger male sexual selection (greater sexual dichromatism and more frequent social polygyny) and higher male parental effort should have lower immune capacity and stronger oxidative imbalance. Within f

Our textbook view of mitochondria, which has been shaped by studies in animals and yeast, fails to do justice to the organelle's broader eukaryotic diversity. While most mitochondria retain a tiny genome, the overwhelming majority of their proteins are nuclear-encoded and vary extensively across lineages. To map this diversity, the MitoCarta Tree of Life Consortium developed experimental and computational workflows to generate high-accuracy mitochondrial proteomes across diverse eukaryotes-helping to lay a foundation for comparative mitochondrial biology with broad implications for physiology,

A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) results in increased pulmonary blood flow and redistribution of flow to other organs. Several co-morbidities (i.e., necrotizing enterocolitis, intracranial hemorrhage, pulmonary edema/hemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and retinopathy) are associated with the presence of a PDA, but whether or not a PDA is responsible for their development is still unclear. In this review, comparative physiology between the full term and preterm newborn and the barriers preventing the necessary cascade of events leading to permanent constriction of the PDA are reviewed.

We describe a patient with myelomonocytic leukemia who demonstrated striking leukemic infiltration in the scar of a recent Hickman catheter placement. This cutaneous involvement occurred initially without signs of systemic relapse. A comparative review of leukemic cell physiology provides several possible reasons for this extramedullary infiltration, including the greater functional maturity, deformability, adhesiveness, and ability to cluster of myelomonocytic and monocytic leukemia cells relative to other leukemias. A careful cutaneous examination, with particular attention to recent scars,

The objective of the current study is to use comparative and functional genomic analysis to help to understand the biological mechanism mediating the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on blood pressure. We mapped 26 585 SNPs that are in linkage disequilibrium with 1071 human blood pressure-associated sentinel SNPs to 9447 syntenic regions in the mouse genome. Approximately 21.8% of the 1071 linkage disequilibrium regions are located at least 10 kb from any protein-coding gene. Approximately 300 blood pressure-associated SNPs are expression quantitative trait loci for a few dozen

The retina is part of the central nervous system, and shares the characteristically high metabolism of the brain. The high energy demand of the retina is normally matched with a large supply of metabolites. When supply does not equal demand (e.g. if retinal blood flow is impaired), retinal neurons are at risk of excitotoxic cell death and vision is impaired or lost. Understanding the energetic budget of the retina is therefore crucial for understanding the pathology and treatment of retinal disease. In this minireview I give an overview of the energetics of the retina, with a focus on lessons

Bite forces play a key role in animal ecology: they affect mating behaviour, fighting success, and the ability to feed. Although feeding habits of arthropods have a significant ecological and economical impact, we lack fundamental knowledge on how the morphology and physiology of their bite apparatus controls bite performance, and its variation with mandible gape. To address this gap, we derived a biomechanical model that characterizes the relationship between bite force and mandibular opening angle from first principles. We validate this model by comparing its geometric predictions with morph

Janus kinases (JAKs) belong to a crucial family of tyrosine kinases, implicated in the patho-physiology of multiple cancer types, and serve as striking therapeutic targets. To date, many potent, either ATP-competitive (PTK domain) or non-ATP-competitive JAK inhibitors have been identified. Among them, Tyrphostin AG-490 (2-cyano-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-N-(phenylmethyl)-2-propenamide) is a well-known ATP-competitive inhibitor. However, its mode of action, details of interacting residues, and induced conformational changes in JAK-specific binding sites remain elusive. Here, through comparative st

Comparative physiology increasingly requires cellular resolution at the level of cell types, tissue microenvironments, and regulatory programs that associate genotype with function under environmental variation. Bulk transcriptomics and tissue-level assays have revealed pathways associated with stress responses, metabolic shifts, and developmental transitions; however, they average signals across heterogeneous cell populations and frequently obscure which cells contribute to physiological phenotypes. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq), and spatial

Hibernation is an energy-saving adaptation that involves a profound suppression of physical activity that can continue for 6-8 months in highly seasonal environments. While immobility and disuse generate muscle loss in most mammalian species, in contrast, hibernating bears and ground squirrels demonstrate limited muscle atrophy over the prolonged periods of physical inactivity during winter, suggesting that hibernating mammals have adaptive mechanisms to prevent disuse muscle atrophy. To identify common transcriptional programmes that underlie molecular mechanisms preventing muscle loss, we co

Hippos are considered the closest living relatives to cetaceans and they have some similar adaptations for aquatic living, such as a modified respiratory tract. Behavioral observations of male and female common hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) at Disney's Animal Kingdom® and the Adventure Aquarium were conducted to describe and examine movements of the nostrils during respiration (inspiration, expiration, and inter-breath interval). The hippo nostril is a crescent shaped opening with lateral and medial aspects that are mobile and can be adducted and abducted to regulate the nostril opening. Not

The vaginal microbiome's transition to a dysbiotic state increases susceptibility to pathogens like group B Streptococcus. While human milk oligosaccharides are established prebiotics in the neonatal gut, their impact on the vaginal niche remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the effects of pooled human milk oligosaccharides on the growth and physiology of vaginal (Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus iners) and gut-derived (Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus) commensals. Growth analyses revealed that human milk oligosaccharides significantly

Perinatal biology encompasses the coordinated sequence of parental, placental, fetal, and neonatal processes that collectively determine reproductive success and form the basis for lifelong health of the offspring. Recent advances in molecular biology, reproductive technologies, and systems biology have transformed our understanding of how events occurring before conception and throughout gestation influence pregnancy outcomes across mammalian species. The invited reviews that comprise this Perinatal Biology collection highlight emerging concepts in assisted reproductive technologies, maternal

This study explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT, as a self-directed learning tool in an undergraduate physiology-related course within a Speech Therapy program. The aim was to introduce first-year Speech Therapy students (n = 30) to AI technologies, assess their prior knowledge and perceptions, and foster critical thinking regarding AI-generated content, with a focus on evaluating AI literacy both generally and within the context of physiology education. A preliminary survey revealed that 73.3% of students (22 out of 30) had previously used AI, while 9

Computational model for airflow through the upper airway of a horse was developed. Previous flow models for human airway do not hold true for horses due to significant differences in anatomy and the high Reynolds number of flow in the equine airway. Moreover, models that simulate the entire respiratory cycle and emphasize on pressures inside the airway in relation to various anatomical diseases are lacking. The geometry of the airway was created by reconstructing images obtained from computed tomography scans of a thoroughbred racehorse. Different geometries for inhalation and exhalation were
