Risk factors and independent predictors of survival in patients with pulmonary epithelioid haemangioendothelioma. Review of the literature and a case report.

Pulmonary epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (PEH) is a rare pulmonary neoplasm. A patient with PEH with lymph node and pleural metastases that were discovered incidentally is described. An abnormal left upper lobe shadow was noticed on CXR in a 70-year-old woman during an assessment for the sudden onset of nausea and vomiting. Transbronchial lung biopsy did not provide a diagnosis. Lobectomy and lymph node resection were performed. The histological diagnosis of PEH was confirmed immunohistochemically by positive reactions to factor VIII-related antigen and CD34. Data on 93 patients with PEH in

Pericardial hemangiosarcoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old, male castrated cat was presented with lethargy, tachypnea, and pleural and pericardial effusion. Echocardiographic assessment revealed an irregular hyperechoic structure that occupied a large portion of the thoracic cavity, expanding from the pericardium and surrounding the heart. Postmortem evaluation, histopathology and immunohistochemistry for factor VIII-related antigen confirmed the diagnosis of pericardial and splenic hemangiosarcoma. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: This case report highlights that hemangiosarcoma, despite being rarely reported, should be co

[Primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin lymphoma with myocardial infiltration].

A case of primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is presented. On this occasion, the lymphoma invaded the myocardium, an event which has not previously been reported in the literature. These neoplasms spread by proximity, and invasion of the pericardium, thoracic wall and oesophagus have been described. Our patient died from heart failure. Tumour myocardial infiltration may well have been the determinant cause through various mechanisms, including a decrease in myocardial contractility. Spread into the myocardium may be facilitated by bulky tumour infiltrates in the pleural space.

Synchronous B3 thymoma and lung bronchoalveolar carcinoma.

The association between thymic tumors and other intrathoracic or extrathoracic neoplasms is relatively rare; the synchronous occurrence of thymoma and bronchoalveolar carcinoma of the lung has never been described so far. A huge B3 cystic thymoma was found at thoracotomy to be associated with stage IV bronchoalveolar carcinoma (intraparenchymal and pleural metastases). The thymic tumor was completely resected; lung cancer was biopsied only for diagnosis and staging purposes. After an uneventful postoperative course the patient underwent chemotherapy; she is still alive and well one year after

[Massive benign pleural schwannoma].

Schwannoma is a neoplasm of the peripheral nerve sheath that develops from schwann's cells. Pleural involvement is uncommon, and typically originates from an intercostal nerve of the posterior-superior mediastinum to then extend along the parietal and mediastinal pleura. We report a case of benign schwannoma of the right hemithorax, which we believe to be the largest ever reported at this time. The clinical presentation, acute respiratory failure, was unusual. The imaging findings of this tumor are described.

[Thoracocentesis for the assessment of lung cancer with pleural effusion].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the pleural and mediastinal effect of thoracentesis tumor-positive cytology in pleural effusions (PE) detected by chest X ray of lung cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was performed in patients with lung cancer for whom PE was evident in chest X ray films, who then underwent thoracentesis followed by video-assisted thoracoscopy (VAT) to evaluate direct pleural tumor infiltration, mediastinal node involvement and the existence of pleural metastasis. Patients without contraindication underwent the procedure, even if tumor positive cytology was present. When

Myoepithelioma of the Lung: A Rare Case With Bilateral Pleural Spread and Diagnostic Challenges in a Middle-Aged Female.

Myoepitheliomas are uncommon neoplasms, predominantly arising in the salivary glands, with pulmonary involvement being extremely rare. Primary lung myoepitheliomas account for only a small number of reported cases, while pleural or bilateral presentations are exceptionally uncommon. Their nonspecific radiological appearance often raises suspicion for metastatic disease, necessitating histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation for accurate diagnosis. We report a diagnostically challenging case of pulmonary myoepithelioma in a 42-year-old female with a history of treated adenoid cystic

Recurrence of renal cell carcinoma after three decades in an octogenarian: Small molecules adding life to years.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common primary renal neoplasm. About a half of our patients relapse after primary treatment. We present here a case of RCC with solitary metastasis to the pleura which occurred 32 years after nephrectomy. Our patient is an 86-year-old male who presented to us with a cough of 2 months and a history of having undergone a right nephrectomy 32 years back. Imaging of the chest showed left pleural effusion with a left pleural nodule. Computed tomography-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology from the pleural nodule was suggestive of malignancy with a clear cell

Cause specific mortality in an Italian pool of asbestos workers cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Asbestos is a known human carcinogen and is causally associated with malignant mesothelioma, lung, larynx and ovarian cancers. METHODS: Cancer risk was studied among a pool of formerly asbestos-exposed workers in Italy. Fifty-two Italian asbestos cohorts (asbestos-cement, rolling-stock, shipbuilding, and other) were pooled and their mortality follow-up was updated to 2018. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were computed for major causes of death considering duration of exposure and time since first exposure (TSFE), using reference rates by region, age and calendar period. Superficial solitary fibrous tumor masquerading as a dermoid cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are relatively rare spindle cell neoplasms uncommonly seen in dermatology practice. Initially discovered as a pleural tumor, SFTs have also been found in extra-pleural sites including the skin and soft tissues. When arising within the dermis or subcutis they are termed superficial SFTs, where they often present as solitary, unilateral, slow growing superficial masses. Histologically, they are composed of spindle cells arranged in a "patternless" pattern with hemangiopericytoma-like vessels dispersed throughout. Historically, CD34, CD99 and Bcl-2 immun

Determination of HE4 in pleural fluid and ratio: considerations and diagnostic performance for malignant pleural effusion.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study included assessing the diagnostic performance of HE4 in malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) and identifying the benign etiologies associated with higher HE4 concentrations. METHODS: The study involved patients with pleural effusion (PE) treated at Part Taulí University Hospital. PE and serum samples were collected and analyzed. Diagnosis of MPE was established by the presence of a positive cytology and/or positive pleural biopsy. HE4 concentrations in LP and serum - among other parameters - were measured on an ECLIA-Cobas e801 (Roche Diagnostics) analyz

Lymphomas involving the pleura: a clinicopathologic study of 34 cases diagnosed by pleural biopsy.

CONTEXT: Pleural involvement by lymphoma is relatively common. However, there are very few clinicopathologic studies reported in the literature of lymphomas involving the pleura. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinicopathologic features of lymphomas involving the pleura. DESIGN: We reviewed the clinicopathologic features of 34 patients with lymphoma involving the pleura proven by biopsy and classified these neoplasms using the World Health Organization classification. RESULTS: There were 22 men and 12 women, with an average age of 62 years (range, 22-82 years). Nine (26.5%) patients had ple

International Analysis of Age-Specific Mortality Rates From Mesothelioma on the Basis of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision.

Past analyses of mortality data from mesothelioma relied on unspecific codes, such as pleural neoplasms. We calculated temporal trends in age-specific mortality rates in Canada, the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Australia on the basis of the 10th version of the International Classification of Diseases, which includes a specific code for mesothelioma. Older age groups showed an increase (in the United States, a weaker decrease) during the study period, whereas in young age groups, there was a decrease (in Poland, a weaker increase

Management of malignant pleural effusion by multimodality treatment including the use of paclitaxel administered by 24-hour intrathoracic infusion for patients with carcinomatous pleuritis.

For successful intrapleural chemotherapy, intrapleural drug activity should be maintained for as long as possible. This interim report presents the results of treatment with paclitaxel administered by 24-hour intrathoracic infusion as an adjunct to selective surgical management and/or systemic chemotherapy for controlling malignant pleural effusion. Thirteen patients with carcinomatous pleuritis were enrolled in the study between October 2001 and September 2004. The sites of primary disease were the lung in 12 patients and the breast in one patient. Paclitaxel (120 mg/m2) was administered by 2

Chemotherapy for intrathoracic cancer in dogs and cats.

The thoracic cavity contains numerous tissue types from which tumors may arise. Broadly speaking, the cavity is comprised of the pleural surfaces, the mediastinum and its enclosed viscera, and the lungs. Neoplasms arising from these structures are frequently advanced at the time of diagnosis, and surgery is rarely curative for malignant processes. Although reports describing anticancer chemotherapy use in dogs and cats for tumors of the thoracic cavity largely have been anecdotal, as advances are made in the chemotherapeutic management of comparable tumors in human cancer patients and as veter

Tumours and pseudotumours of the chest wall.

In 78 patients a total of 89 chest wall tumours were considered for surgery between 1960 and 1982. There were 63 neoplasms (12 benign, 51 malignant) and 26 pseudotumours (1 chest wall deformity, 6 inflammatory tumours and 19 hydatid cysts of the chest wall). Radical resection of some kind was possible for 67 tumours and 2 patients underwent palliative resection. Exploratory thoracotomy and biopsy were performed in 9 patients and thoracoscopy and biopsy in 10. One hydatid cyst was managed with mebendazole. There were 11 postoperative complications and three hospital deaths. Chest wall prosthese

The value of cytology in diagnosis of serous effusions in malignant lymphomas: An experience of a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Malignant lymphomas (ML) are often complicated by serous effusions. The present study is an attempt to cytologically assess a large series of serous effusions associated with ML, identify the immunoreactivity of cells and to evaluate the role of various ancillary methods in confirming and subtyping these cases. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 4612 serous effusions was undertaken at the Department of Cytology, Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute by retrieving data from the year 2015 to 2017. Total 169 cases of ML, clinically suspicious, were included. All cerebrospinal fluids

Imaging features of thoracic metastases from gynecologic neoplasms.

Gynecologic malignancies are a heterogeneous group of common neoplasms and represent the fourth most common malignancy in women. Thoracic metastases exhibit various imaging patterns and are usually associated with locally invasive primary neoplasms with intra-abdominal spread. However, thoracic involvement may also occur many months to years after initial diagnosis or as an isolated finding in patients without evidence of intra-abdominal neoplastic involvement. Thoracic metastases from endometrial carcinoma typically manifest as pulmonary nodules and lymphadenopathy. Thoracic metastases from o

Pleural multicystic mesothelial proliferation. The so-called multicystic mesothelioma.

We report on the clinical and pathological features of a hitherto unrecognized multicystic and multifocal mesothelial lesion arising in the pleural cavity of a 37-year-old Caucasian woman. The lesions consisted of clusters of thin-walled cysts separated by connective tissue and lined by a single layer of flattened and cuboidal mesothelium. Mucin stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy were consistent with a mesothelial origin. The pathological features are identical to those of the previously reported multicystic mesotheliomas of the peritoneum. Although these multicystic periton

[Primary pharyngolaryngeal carcinoma, pulmonary metastases and carcinoma of the bronchus (author's transl)].

On the basis of 112 cases of pulmonary or mediastinal neoplasms observed during the treatment or follow-up of 952 carcinomas of the pharynx and larynx, the authors study in detail 45 cases of metastases. They draw the following conclusions:--metastases present clinically relatively early in the treated course of pharyngolaryngeal carcinomas: 85% before 18 months.--cannonball lesions are the commonest endo-thoracic clinical metastases: 6 out of 10.--carcinomas of the hypopharynx are at the origin of 2/3 of cannonball lesions (alpha less than or equal to 0.02) and 1/4 of mediastinal lymphadenopa
