Toxicity of Agrochemicals Among Larval Painted Lady Butterflies (Vanessa cardui).

In the Southern High Plains of the United States, beef cattle feed yards and row crop agriculture are predominant sources of agrochemical usage. Beef cattle feed yards use large quantities of veterinary pharmaceuticals to promote cattle growth and health, along with insecticides to control insect pests, whereas row crop-based agriculture relies on herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides to increase yields. Previous studies have documented the occurrence of agrochemicals beyond feed yard and row crop agriculture boundaries in uncultivated, marginal areas, raising concern that migratory pollina

Cypress Pollinosis: from Tree to Clinic.

Cypress (Cupressus sp.pl) is a genus within the Cupressaceae family. This family covers all of the Earth's continents except for Antarctica, and it includes about 160 species. The most important taxa for allergic diseases belong to five different genera: Cupressus, Hesperocyparis, Juniperus, Cryptomeria, and Chamaecyparis. Cupressaceae species share a common pollen type that can even include the genus Taxus (Taxaceae) when this plant is also present. As Juniperus oxycedrus pollinates in October, Cupressus sempervirens in January and February, Hesperocyparis arizonica (prev. Cupressus arizonica

Flowers meet Newton: testing the role of gravitational pull in resupination of orchid flowers.

Resupination refers to the developmental orientation changes of flowers through ~180°, leaving them effectively upside-down. It is a widespread trait present in 14 angiosperm families, including the Orchidaceae, where it is a gravitropic phenomenon actively controlled by auxins. Here, we demonstrate that the passive gravitational pull on flower parts can have an additional influence on resupination. We studied a lady's slipper orchid in which some flowers naturally fail to resupinate. We conducted a manipulative experiment removing floral parts and showed that both the probability of complete

Looking for non-hermaphrodite cacti: multidisciplinary studies in Gymnocalycium bruchii endemic to central Argentina.

Through a multidisciplinary study we found that Gymnocalycium bruchii, an endemic cactus from central Argentina, acts as a dioecious species, which is the first record in this genus. Cactaceae species are typically hermaphroditic; however, about 2% have other different reproductive systems. These non-hermaphroditic species may develop sexual dimorphism in flowers or other reproductive, vegetative or ecological traits, besides a specific breeding system and floral ontogeny. Therefore, multidisciplinary research is necessary to fully understand reproduction in those species. For this purpose, we

High outcrossing rates in a self-compatible and highly aggregated host-generalist mistletoe.

Plants have evolved various strategies to avoid inbreeding, but the mass flowering displayed by many plants predisposes them to within-plant pollen movements and self-pollination. Mistletoes often aggregate at multiple spatial scales. Their bird pollinators often visit several flowers of the same individual and of others on the same host tree. We hypothesized that hermaphroditic mistletoes have self-incompatibility mechanisms that reduce or prevent selfing. Whether their spatial distribution, affected by host specificity, host distribution, and the behaviour of seed dispersers, influences thei

Assessing degree of flowering implicates multiple Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae species in allergy.

BACKGROUND: IgE-mediated sensitization to the Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae families is a cause of allergic symptoms in arid areas. Salsola kali and Chenopodium album are considered the main species responsible; however, there is a discrepancy between the pollination period of these two plants and clinical symptoms. The objectives of this study were to identify new Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae members with sensitization capacity and to correlate symptoms, pollen counts and degree of flowering of different species. METHODS: A total of 37 individuals monosensitized to S. kali and C. album were i

Sex-biased seed predation in a gynodioecious species, Sidalcea campestris.

PREMISE: The coexistence of females and hermaphrodites, or gynodioecy, requires that females have a reproductive advantage over hermaphrodites in offspring quality and/or quantity. Female advantage can be mediated by a variety of ecological factors, including interactions with antagonists such as pre-dispersal seed predators. We compared differential rates of seed predation on hermaphrodites and females in Sidalcea campestris to assess the potential role of seed predators in gynodioecy maintenance. METHODS: We evaluated rates of seed predation in 28 populations of S. campestris, a gynodioecio

Distribution of infectious and parasitic agents among three sentinel bee species across European agricultural landscapes.

Infectious and parasitic agents (IPAs) and their associated diseases are major environmental stressors that jeopardize bee health, both alone and in interaction with other stressors. Their impact on pollinator communities can be assessed by studying multiple sentinel bee species. Here, we analysed the field exposure of three sentinel managed bee species (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and Osmia bicornis) to 11 IPAs (six RNA viruses, two bacteria, three microsporidia). The sentinel bees were deployed at 128 sites in eight European countries adjacent to either oilseed rape fields or apple orc

Understanding public preferences for urban wildflower meadows.

Accelerating urbanisation challenges biodiversity and human wellbeing, demanding effective urban nature-based solutions. Urban wildflower meadows are increasingly popular interventions that may offer biodiversity and wellbeing benefits. However, realising their potential depends on public support, which requires robust evidence on which meadow design attributes the public prefers and values most. We conducted a choice experiment with urban greenspace users across three UK cities to quantify willingness-to-pay (WTP) for some of the key characteristics of wildflower meadows in public parks, name

Breeding System of Jacquemontia curtisii, an Endemic Morning-Glory of Pine Rocklands.

The pine rocklands of southern Florida are a globally imperiled ecosystem, and as a result many species endemic to this habitat are endangered or threatened. To help conserve the endemic plants of the imperiled pine rockland habitat in southern Florida, it is important to understand factors that influence their successful reproduction. Field-collected individuals of Jacquemontia curtisii Peter ex Hallier f. (Convolvulaceae), a threatened species of perennial herb, were grown in a greenhouse to control conditions for floral measurements and hand-pollinations. While flowering lasts for months, i

Floral Integration and Phenotypic Selection on Floral Traits of Ipomoea cavalcantei (Convolvulaceae), a Rare, Endemic, and Endangered Species to the Amazon Ironstone Outcrops.

Maintaining evolutionary potential is essential for species persistence, particularly for rare and endemic taxa that are more susceptible to habitat changes. We evaluated floral integration and phenotypic selection on the floral traits of Ipomoea cavalcantei, a species endemic to the ironstone outcrops (cangas) of the Eastern Amazon and primarily pollinated by hummingbirds. Using 90 individuals from a natural population in the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, we conducted six pollination experiments to assess the mating system. We estimated individual fitness through fruit set and characterized f

Floral humidity as a reliable sensory cue for profitability assessment by nectar-foraging hawkmoths.

Most research on plant-pollinator communication has focused on sensory and behavioral responses to relatively static cues. Floral rewards such as nectar, however, are dynamic, and foraging animals will increase their energetic profit if they can make use of floral cues that more accurately indicate nectar availability. Here we document such a cue--transient humidity gradients--using the night blooming flowers of Oenothera cespitosa (Onagraceae). The headspace of newly opened flowers reaches levels of about 4% above ambient relative humidity due to additive evapotranspirational water loss throu

Detection of Nosema ceranae in Euglossa imperialis (Apidae) and a synthesis of host associations across Hymenoptera.

Pathogen spillover from managed to wild pollinators represents an emerging threat to global pollinator diversity. However, surveillance of microbial pathogens in tropical wild bee communities remains severely limited. We investigated Nosema ceranae detection prevalence in the orchid bee Euglossa imperialis across seasons at 2 ecologically contrasting sites in the Panama Canal corridor: a protected tropical forest and a semi-urban landscape. Using species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, we detected N. ceranae DNA in gut tissues of this euglossine bee. Detection prevalence was s

Honeybees Tolerate Cyanogenic Glucosides from Clover Nectar and Flowers.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) pollinate flowers and collect nectar from many important crops. White clover (Trifolium repens) is widely grown as a temperate forage crop, and requires honeybee pollination for seed set. In this study, using a quantitative LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) assay, we show that the cyanogenic glucosides linamarin and lotaustralin are present in the leaves, sepals, petals, anthers, and nectar of T. repens. Cyanogenic glucosides are generally thought to be defense compounds, releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide upon degradation. However, increasing evidence in

Method for detection of mtDNA damages for evaluating of pesticides toxicity for bumblebees (Bombus terrestris L.).

Bumblebees are important for crop pollination. Currently, the number of pollinators is decreasing worldwide, which is attributed mostly to the widespread use of pesticides. The aim of this work was to develop a method for assessing the genotoxicity of pesticides for the Bombus terrestris L. bumblebee using long-range PCR of mitochondrial DNA fragments. We have developed a panel of primers and assessed the genotoxicity of the following pesticides: imidacloprid, rotenone, deltamethrin, difenocanozole, malathion, metribuzin, penconazole, esfenvalerate, and dithianon. All pesticides (except imidac

Sexual dimorphism and female advantage hypothesis in the gynomonoecious-gynodioecious Dianthus plumarius (Caryophyllaceae).

To explain the co-existence and maintenance of females along with hermaphrodite plants, the female advantage hypothesis has been proposed where females should show greater fecundity compared to their conspecific hermaphrodites. On the other hand, greater attraction would be selected in the hermaphrodites to increase their male function, potentially leading to larger showier flowers, with more rewards. Here, I tested the sexual dimorphism trade-off hypothesis with the gynomonoecious-gynodioecious Dianthus plumarius (Caryophyllaceae), in the gardens of Bariloche (Patagonia, Argentina). I measure

Reproductive Biology of Rheum webbianum Royle, a Vulnerable Medicinal Herb From Alpines of North-Western Himalaya.

Information on reproductive biology and pollination ecology studies of threatened plants are essential to develop strategies for their sustainable utilization and effective conservation. As such, these studies were conducted on Rheum webbianum, a high-value "vulnerable" medicinal herb of the north-western Himalaya. This species presents a unique mode of reproductive behavior through the involvement of different floral events, including the movement of reproductive organs. The plants survive extremely cold conditions through underground perennating rhizomes that sprout into juvenile shoots with

Leveraging natural climatic advantages for large‑scale wheat doubled haploid production via wheat × maize: a protocol optimization study.

BACKGROUND: Doubled haploid (DH) lines generated via the wheat × maize system represent an effective technology for accelerating wheat breeding. However, achieving low-cost, large-scale DH production remains a core technical challenge. RESULTS: In this study, we conducted flowering-synchronization experiments to determine the hybridization window between wheat and maize. Wheat was sown year-round in the field, while maize was planted both in the field and in high tunnels. We also evaluated a novel pollination method, four new nutrition solutions for cut-tiller culture, and a newly designed op

When sporangia became seeds: The innovation that rewrote land plant evolution.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The origin of the seed represents one of the most transformative evolutionary innovations in land plants, underpinning the ecological success of spermatophytes and fundamentally reshaping terrestrial ecosystems. Rather than arising as a discrete novelty, the seed evolved through a long sequence of reproductive transformations that progressively reorganized the plant life cycle. This review aims to synthesize the evolutionary steps leading from free-sporing vascular plants to the seed habit, emphasizing their functional and developmental integration. SCOPE: We synthesize p

Life habits and evolutionary biology of new two-winged long-proboscid scorpionflies from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber.

Long-proboscid scorpionflies are enigmatic, mid-Mesozoic insects associated with gymnosperm pollination. One major lineage, Aneuretopsychina, consists of four families plus two haustellate clades, Diptera and Siphonaptera. One clade, Pseudopolycentropodidae, from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber, contains Parapolycentropus. Here, we newly establish Dualula, assigned to Dualulidae, constituting the fifth lineage. Parapolycentropus and Dualula lineages are small, two-winged, with unique siphonate mouthparts for imbibing pollination drops. A cibarial pump provides siphonal food inflow; in Dualula, th
