During hypotonic polyuria renal function studies by the clearance (cl.) method, and urinary PGE2, 6-keto-PGF1 alpha and TxB2 determinations were performed on 14 healthy women in normal potassium balance (N) and 14 healthy women in sustained potassium depletion (KD) induced by low dietary potassium intake (less than or equal to 10 mmol day-1) and natriuretic treatment. By using different depletive patterns, two groups with estimated cumulative potassium deficits of 160 +/- 43 mmol (KD1, n = 8) and 198 +/- 22 mmol (KD2, n = 6), respectively, were obtained. (1) In both the KD1 and KD2 groups as c

Control (.5% chloride) or low-chloride (.038% chloride) practical diets and low-chloride (.00038% chloride) well water were fed to male Holstein calves for 7 wk. Substantial alterations in characteristics of blood associated with acid-base balance developed in those fed the low-chloride diet. Along with reduced potassium in plasma, concentrations of chloride in synovial fluid, saliva, and plasma also were reduced. Solids in plasma, blood pH, packed cell volume, carbon dioxide pressure (PCO2) in blood, and bicarbonate were increased. Most of the changes in plasma occurred within 1 wk with littl

Seed priming is a widely used pre-germination technique that enhances sprouting efficiency, synchrony, and the initial development of plantlets, particularly under suboptimal environmental conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different seed priming treatments on the germination, growth, and yield performance of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) through a series of laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments conducted during the 2024 cropping season. The laboratory experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications. Treatments included po

OBJECTIVE: To review the metabolism and function of potassium and causes and management of hypokalaemia.
DATA SOURCES: A review of studies reported from 1966 to 1998 and identified through a MEDLINE search of the English-language literature of hypokalaemia.
SUMMARY OF REVIEW: Potassium is predominantly an intracellular ion that contributes to approximately 50% of the intracellular fluid osmolality and is largely responsible for the resting membrane potential. The latter accounts for its influence on the excitability of muscle and nervous tissue. Hypokalaemia is defined as a serum potassium o

A rare syndrome has been described in which mineralocorticoid-resistant hyperkalemia of renal origin occurs in the absence of glomerular insufficiency and renal sodium wasting and in which hyperchloremic acidosis, hypertension, and hyporeninemia coexist. The primary abnormality has been postulated to be a defect of the potassium secretory mechanism of the distal nephron. The present studies were carried out to investigate the mechanism of impaired renal potassium secretion in a patient with this syndrome. When dietary intake of sodium chloride was normal, renal clearance of potassium was subno

The effects of dietary chloride restriction - alone or combined with sodium and potassium restriction - on aldosterone biosynthesis and the renin-angiotensin system were studied in rats. Treatment with a chloride-deficient diet led to a temporary decrease in the capsular adrenal conversions of corticosterone to 18-hydroxycorticosterone and aldosterone (manifest after 2 weeks but not longer apparent after 3 weeks), which was accompanied by a progressive rise in plasma renin activity and a moderate fall in plasma potassium. Combined restriction of sodium, potassium and chloride elicited a decrea

A new test model in living pigs is presented. The model is easy to manage and, in contrast with other test models, it is unnecessary to euthanize the animals. The animals keep their value and can be slaughtered later. We advise the use of only one period of 'pill-feeding', because more periods will stress the animals and probably inhibit normal weight gain. We suggest this model as the method of choice in the evaluation of local ulcerogenic effects of drug substances in oral pharmaceutical formulations. An endoscopic evaluation in vivo of the ulcerogenic effect of potassium chloride in differe

1. ACTH administration (20 microgram day-1 kg-1) to sheep produces hypertension associated with a raised cardiac output and hypokalaemia. 2. The aim of the present experiments was to detail the haemodynamic changes associated with restoration of the extracellular potassium concentration in sheep with ACTH-induced hypertension. 3. After 7 days of ACTH treatment potassium chloride (10 mmol/h) was infused for 3 days to restore plasma [K+] to the pre-ACTH value. 4. ACTH reduced plasma [K+] from 4.4 +/- 0.1 to 3.2 +/- 0.2 mmol/l but 3 days of potassium chloride infusion returned plasma [K+] to 4.3

The faecal output of chloride, sodium and potassium was studied in 14 patients with active idiopathic proctocolitis, in an attempt to establish a relationship between faecal electrolyte output and acid-base balance data. 7 patients with ileostomy and 8 healthy volunteers were used as controls. The daily faecal excretion of chloride and sodium in proctocolitis was significantly in excess of normal, whereas that of potassium was within the normal range. From the comparison with the results in patients with ileostomy it is concluded that colitic colon has an impaired capacity to absorb chloride a

The exposure to hexavalent chromium is often known to cause acute renal failure. It has been found that nonenzymatic antioxidants and the induction of heme oxygenase 1 have protective effects against nephrotoxicity induced by potassium dichromate in vivo. In this work, the effect of stannous chloride, an inducer of heme oxygenase 1, on potassium dichromate-induced toxicity in proximal tubular epithelial cells was studied. Hexavalent chromium levels, peroxynitrite content, reduced thiol content, heme oxygenase activity, reactive oxygen species production, and stannous chloride scavenging capaci

We here report a case of Bartter's syndrome occurring in association with diabetes mellitus. The patient, an insulin-dependent diabetic, presented with hypokalaemia, inappropriate kaliuresis and metabolic alkalosis. He had high plasma renin activity, relatively low plasma aldosterone, and resistance to infused angiotensin II. A high potassium diet raised total body potassium and serum potassium, did not affect plasma renin activity, but raised plasma aldosterone significantly and did not alter the resistance to angiotensin II. Indomethacin administered acutely reduced urinary potassium and kal

This study aimed to analyze the ecotoxicity of nitrogen-, phosphorus-, and potassium-based compounds to organisms of two different trophic levels in order to compare the toxic effect between high-purity substances and these substances as components of fertilizers. Dilutions were made with the fertilizers' potassium chloride, potassium nitrate, superphosphate, urea, and their equivalent reagents, to conduct assays to establish the acute lethal concentration for half of the population (LC50). Ten individuals of the benthic snail Biomphalaria glabrata and the fish Danio rerio were exposed to each

In resting skeletal muscle the potassium permeability is determined by the permeability of the inwardly potassium rectifier. Continuous resting membrane potential measurements are done to follow the relaxation of the membrane potential upon changes in potassium permeability. Inhibition of the inwardly potassium rectifier, by extracellular application of 80 microM Ba(2+), causes the cell to depolarize with mean time constants as follows: in control 127+/-7 s ( n=23), in the presence of bumetanide, as an inhibitor of the Na(+)/K(+)/2Cl(-) cotransporter, 182+/-23 s ( n=7), in hypertonic media (34

Total body potassium has been estimated in 26 hypertensive patients who were hypokalaemic as a result of long-term chlorthalidone treatment (mean 20.5 months), while they were on chlorthalidone and 4 weeks after this had been discontinued. The mean difference amounted to only 95 mEq (not significant). In 6 additional patients not previously treated with chlorthalidone, serial total body potassium estimations revealed a mean potassium deficiency of 245 mEq after 33 days and of 106 mEq after 100 days. These results suggest that the mechanism causing the initial potassium loss is partly reversed

To study human idiopathic hypercalciuria we developed an animal model, genetic hypercalciuric stone-forming rats, whose pathophysiology parallels that of human idiopathic hypercalciuria. Fed the oxalate precursor, hydroxyproline, every rat in this model develops calcium oxalate stones. Using this rat model, we tested whether chlorthalidone and potassium citrate combined would reduce calcium oxalate stone formation and improve bone quality more than either agent alone. These rats (113 generation) were fed a normal calcium and phosphorus diet with hydroxyproline and divided into four groups: die

Studies were performed to evaluate whether alterations in the excretion of citrate, a metabolic precursor of bicarbonate, play a quantitatively important role in acid-base balance during bicarbonate feeding in the rat. Potassium depletion (K-DEPL), chloride depletion (Cl-DEPL), or potassium plus chloride depletion (KCl-DEPL) was produced by eliminating potassium, chloride, or potassium chloride from the diet. After 3 days of depletion, sodium bicarbonate (4,000 mueq/24 h) was added to the diet for 7 days. In all groups plasma bicarbonate concentration increased minimally during bicarbonate adm

Our purpose in writing this article is to emphasize the acid-base consequences and total body imbalances which follow the selective depletion of HCl. The initial body balance is an equimolar deficit of chloride and gain of bicarbonate. Within a short period of time, body balance changes; the net deficits are closer to equimolar losses of potassium and chloride. Since the loss of potassium occurred without the simultaneous loss of existing body anions (chloride or phosphate), this negative balance of potassium is accompanied by an equimolar gain of hydrogen ions. Thus when the negative balance

The metal alloys which were investigated histopathologically in the first part of this study, were examined with respect to their allergic potentials using the patch test. Results from 60 subjects (aged 17-23) were evaluated following exposure to nickel sulphate, potassium dichromate, silver nitrate, cobalt nitrate, copper sulphate, palladium chloride, platinum chloride and gold chloride. Nickel sulphate produced the most vigorous allergic response whereas gold chloride showed the least of all. The remaining solutions were ranked in decreasing order of severity as follows: potassium dichromate
