Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a key HIV prevention intervention, particularly in high-burden settings such as KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This study examined PrEP initiation trends and service delivery platforms using routine health system data from the District Health Information System (webDHIS) and Three Interlinked Electronic Registers (TIER. Net), covering all public-sector facilities from 2015/2016 to 2024/2025. Facilities were categorised by cumulative initiation volume: low (<500; n = 759), medium (500-1999; n = 242), and high (≥2000; n = 40). PrEP initiation increased from 18,98

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the cornerstone of HIV prevention in the United States, yet uptake remains low among bisexual men compared to gay men. Theory-driven communication interventions have promise for addressing this disparity. Prior research among gay and bisexual men has shown that the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) can predict PrEP intentions through attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioral control, while other studies highlight the influence of sexual identity-related stressors on prevention behaviors. However, bisexual men remain underrepresented in this work. This study sou

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a prevention approach with potential for reducing HIV incidence with widespread adoption. Despite this, more research is needed to inform interventions to optimize PrEP use. Motivational interviewing (MI) shows promise for enhancing PrEP utilization, however, research comprehensively examining its effectiveness in advancing PrEP care continuum participation remains limited. This study aims to address this deficit through a systematic literature review, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Let Evidence G

Accurate adherence measures to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are essential for identifying individuals with low adherence and providing tailored support. This systematic review summarizes evidence on the performance of PrEP indirect adherence measures and explores their potential use in clinical practice. Following a registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42020144733) we searched PubMed, Embase, LILACS and Web of Science until December 2024. We included studies that assessed PrEP adherence among individuals using daily oral PrEP with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate plus emtricitabine (TDF/FTC).

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a major global public health concern, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and emtricitabine (FTC) is a strategy recommended by the World Health Organization to prevent sexual transmission of HIV. Vaginal delivery systems based on nanofibers offer several advantages, including high surface area, mucoadhesiveness, and controlled drug release. This study aimed to develop and characterize TDF and FTC-loaded zein-based electrospun nanofibers for vaginal PrEP. Electrospun h

OBJECTIVE: To assess HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use for HIV prevention among college students in the United States.
PARTICIPANTS: Full- and part-time students (aged 18+ years) attending 4-year institutions (n = 133831).
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of combined ACHA-NCHA-III survey data from Spring 2022 and Spring 2023. PrEP-to-need ratios (PnR) and PrEP equity ratios (PER) were calculated to identify disparities in PrEP use.
RESULTS: Two percent (n = 2662) of students reported taking PrEP. Overall, the PrEP-to-need ratio (PnR) was 13.9, indicating that approximately 1

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic continues to be a major public health crisis in the United States. Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has emerged as an effective tool to prevent HIV transmission, its uptake and adherence remain suboptimal, especially among high-risk populations. This article explores how the Health Belief Model (HBM) can serve as a guiding framework for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to enhance PrEP delivery and patient engagement. Recent literature highlights persistent barriers to PrEP use, including stigma, perceived risk, misinformatio

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to present a public health problem, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) offers a promising preventative intervention; however, its uptake remains low, so investigating determinants of use is essential. This article applies queer critical discourse analysis to a corpus of 121 TikToks sampled via the TikTok algorithm, coded and refined into three overarching content categories: 'what makes a PrEP user?', 'what is PrEP as a drug?', and 'sexual health and HIV'. Examples from within these categories reveal four underlying discursive themes: (1) stigmatis

The approved combination of Tixagevimab/Cilgavimab has been shown to decrease the rate of symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients at increased risk of inadequate response to vaccination. However, Tixagevimab/Cilgavimab was tested in a few studies that included patients with hematological malignancies, even if this population has shown an increased risk of unfavorable outcomes following infection (with high rates of hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, and mortality) and poor significant immunization following vaccines. We performed a real-life prospective cohort study to evalua

Prophylaxis based on antiretrovirals, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis to HIV (PrEP), has the potential to protect the populations most vulnerable to infection, which renews optimism for controlling the HIV epidemic. Against this backdrop, the aim of this article is to analyze the perceptions, negotiations and tensions surrounding the use of PrEP by men who have sex with men (MSM). This is a qualitative cross-section of a multicenter study, analyzing semi-structured interviews with 18 users of specialized HIV/AIDS healthcare facilities in the city of São Paulo/SP. The findings show that negoti

Although HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) effectively and safely prevents HIV among adolescents, uptake of PrEP is low. Adolescents must have primary care providers (PCPs) prescribe them PrEP, making PCPs critical actors in PrEP delivery. However, research has primarily investigated determinants of PCPs' intention to prescribe adolescents PrEP rather than the determinants of performing the behavior itself. We examined the demographic, clinical practice, and implementation determinants of PCPs previously prescribing PrEP to adolescents. PCPs were recruited from a national Qualtrics panel of

IMPORTANCE: Pre-exposure prophylaxis with neutralizing SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs PrEP) prevents infection and reduces hospitalizations and the duration thereof for COVID-19 and death among high-risk individuals. However, reduced effectiveness due to a changing SARS-CoV-2 viral landscape and high drug prices remain substantial implementation barriers.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of mAbs PrEP as COVID-19 PrEP.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: For this economic evaluation, a decision analytic model was developed and parameterized with health care outcome and utili

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective in preventing HIV infection but is not yet widely available in resource-limited settings such as the Dominican Republic. We aimed to ascertain PrEP acceptability among people living with HIV in the Dominican Republic who are part of HIV serodiscordant partnerships and understand relationships between PrEP acceptability, HIV stigma, and intimate partner violence. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of people in care for HIV infection included acceptability-related questions and assessments of HIV stigma and intimate partner violence. PURPOSE: HIV rates are increasing in rural areas, and adolescents are disproportionately affected. HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily pill that is effective at preventing HIV; however, PrEP uptake among adolescents is low. PrEP is dependent on primary care providers (PCPs) prescribing it, but research has overwhelmingly sampled urban PCPs. This study compared the PrEP awareness, practices, and comfort between rural and urban family medicine physicians.
METHODS: A total of 256 family medicine physicians in the United States were recruited from a Qualtrics panel to complete an onlin

Social media forums provide a window into how gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men talk about pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention (PrEP) outside of research contexts. To examine information exchange about this important pillar of HIV prevention, discussions around PrEP were collected from the r/askgaybros subreddit of the social media site Reddit (2014-2019). Post titles and asks were qualitatively coded to identify themes describing the primary purpose of the post. In all, 1163 PrEP posts were identified, and a 23.3-fold increase in post volume was seen from 2014 (n = 20

Women experiencing incarceration (WEI) in the United States are disproportionately impacted by HIV, yet HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is underutilized by women in the United States. In order to inform an intervention to promote PrEP initiation during incarceration and facilitate linkage to PrEP care following release from incarceration, we conducted individual, semistructured qualitative interviews with WEI (N = 21) and key stakeholders (N = 14). While WEI had little or no previous knowledge about PrEP, they viewed it as something that would benefit women involved in the criminal justice

BACKGROUND: Public health is increasingly turning to non-traditional digital data to inform HIV prevention and control strategies. We demonstrate a parsimonious method using both traditional survey and internet search histories to provide new insights into HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) information seeking that can be easily extended to other settings.
METHOD: We modeled how US internet search volumes from 2019 for HIV testing and PrEP compared against expected search volumes for HIV testing and PrEP using state HIV prevalence and socioeconomic characteristics as predictors.

BACKGROUND: Limited access to healthcare has been associated with limited uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM). This descriptive analysis examined, in a near universal healthcare setting, differences between MSM reporting using versus not using PrEP in the past 12 months.
METHOD: Data come from the 2017 Boston sample of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system, containing a venue-based and time-spaced sample of 530 MSM. The analysis used descriptive frequencies and tests of bivariate associations by PrEP use using Fisher's exact

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) be considered for all patients diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Emergency departments (EDs) are an important site for diagnosis and treatment of STIs for under-served populations. Consequently, we identified 377 patients diagnosed with a bacterial sexually transmitted infection (gonorrhea, chlamydia, and/or syphilis) at a major New York City emergency department between 1/1/2014 and 7/30/2017 to examine associations between key sociodemographic characteristics

To identify factors associated with pharmacist dispensing practice and comfort counseling patients about pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention (PrEP). Cross-sectional 2016 census of Indiana managing pharmacists measured PrEP awareness, comfort dispensing and counseling patients. Modified Poisson models with robust error variance estimated relative risks and confidence intervals. 15.8% of 284 pharmacists had dispensed PrEP and 11.6% had consulted about it. Dispensing and comfort counseling were associated with confidence in knowledge about PrEP medication adherence and adverse effects of
