BACKGROUND: Pigeon fanciers' lung (PFL) is a form of extrinsic allergic alveolitis. Affected individuals produce antibodies to various pigeon antigens, and the resulting immune complexes are thought to initiate the disease. However, high antibody titres also occur in some asymptomatic individuals. Previously attention has focused on protein antigens, but we have recently identified pigeon intestinal mucin as a novel antigen in PFL.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between IgG subclass antibodies to pigeon intestinal mucin and the development of pigeon fanciers' lung.

Seventy-nine patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) were evaluated and were followed in a longitudinal, prospective fashion during a 6-year period for the development of immune parameters indicating Aspergillus fumigatus (Af) sensitization and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Although four patients developed frank ABPA, there was considerable variability in immune parameters in non-ABPA. The clinical and immunologic features of ten patients with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), observed over periods varying from 12 months to 10 years, are reported. Acute attacks of ABPA were characterized by several, or all of: increased cough and sputum, haemoptysis, pleuritic pain, expectoration of sputum plugs, and increasing airways obstruction. A study was conducted to determine whether a Moraxella bovis ribosomal vaccine would protect calves from infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Each of 16 calves were given 2 inoculations 21 days apart. Twenty-one days after the 2nd inoculation, 8 of the calves were challenge exposed with a homologous strain culture and 8 calves were challenge exposed to a heterologous strain culture of M bovis. Sera from 71 patients with culturally proven nocardiosis were tested for precipitins against a pool of Nocardia asteroides and N. brasiliensis culture filtrates and against antigens from the supernatant of homogenized N. asteroides cells. Three serological tests for antibody to Micropolyspora faeni, the precipitin test (Ouchterlony double diffusion test in two dimensions) the fluorescent antibody test (double-layer technique using patient's serum in middle layer) and a quantitative radioimmunoassay for IgG antibody were applied to cases of farmer's lung syndrome and compared as to their value in diagnosis and management of these cases. A cross-sectional study on suberosis was conducted in the Champagne-Ardenne County, France, to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, the level of pulmonary function, and the presence of precipitins against Penicillium frequentans. Thirteen of the 33 workers exposed to cork dust had respiratory symptoms excluding hypersensitivity pneumonitis. An autopsy was performed on a patient who had chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis that was observed for 9 years. The patient was a farmer who developed symptoms every March through July during the use of moist hay that was infected heavily with Candida. Precipitins and an inhalation challenge test to C albicans were positive. We interpret the role of C albicans in this case.

OBJECTIVE: To better define the serology of a panel of sera from patients with a clinical diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) with a negative antinuclear antibody (ANA) test on mouse liver.
METHODS: Sensitive ELISA methods for anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB, and anti-U1RNP were applied to a panel of 76 sera with either SLE or SCLE and a negative ANA test on mouse liver.

We describe five patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) that was related to using home ultrasonic humidifiers. All patients had micronodular infiltrates on their chest radiograph, and their lung biopsy specimens revealed alveolitis with or without epithelioid cell granulomas. We describe a case of interlobar pulmonary sequestration diagnosed at thoracotomy in which there were a number of unusual features at presentation: an opacity with multiple cavities, positive aspergillus precipitins, erythema nodosum and a haemothorax complicating a trans-thoracic needle biopsy. Although it is unusual to find such a constellation of symptoms and signs they could be explained in a logical fashion.

p6trinsic allergic alveolitis is rare in childhood, with most of the cases reported due to exposure to avian precipitins (Stiem et al. 1966; Dinda et al. 1969; Chandra & Everly Jones 1972; El-Hefny et al. 1980). We report a 10-year-old girl with bird fancier's lung, and suggest that environmental antigens should be sought in children presenting with non-resolving chest disease.
