Multi-predator feeding aggregations (MPFAs) are ocean events whereby two or more species forage on the same or co-occurring prey. Such communities are dynamic, with community structure reflecting the connections between species and the benefits and costs of associations. The analysis of MPFAs provides an overview of ecosystem health, with social networks reflecting prey and available resources. Demographic analyses of MPFAs can act as process-based indicators of community responses to rapid change. To understand complex community dynamics, we identified community types in MPFAs using hierarchi

The ability to prioritize relevant stimuli over distracting ones is essential for adaptive behavior, particularly in species with limited sensory systems. In the mudflat crab Neohelice granulata, a moving object on the ground (dummy) can elicit either avoidance or pursuit, indicating that the same stimulus may be interpreted as predator or prey. Previous studies have shown that the probability of these opposite responses depends on both stimulus features (e.g. size, speed) and intrinsic animal attributes (e.g. sex, hunger level). Here, we investigated how social context - a factor independent

On their dorsal surface, bat tongues show a raised muscular structure called mediodorsal lobe (MDL) or lingual prominence. It exhibits different mechanical papillae across species, which we hypothesized are linked to foraging strategies. We predicted that tall MDLs and prominent papillae pointing frontward would effectively trap prey items caught on the wing by aerial hawkers. We examined 904 high-resolution, close-up images of 239 individual bats from 24 European species, focusing on MDL height and morphology and arrangement of MDL papillae. Aerial hawkers such as Tadarida teniotis, Nyctalus

Consumers vary in their excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus, altering nutrient cycles and ecosystem function. Traditional mass balance models that focus on dietary and tissue nutrients have poorly explained such variation in excretion. Here, we contrast diet and tissue nutrient models for nutrient excretion with predation risk, an often overlooked factor, using the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata) as our model system. We surveyed guppies at 12 sites spread across two streams with parallel gradients in food quality and predation risk. At each site, we assessed guppy diet, tissue nitroge

The estimation of foraging parameters is fundamental for understanding predator ecology. Predation and feeding can vary with multiple factors, such as prey availability, presence of kleptoparasites and human disturbance. However, our knowledge is mostly limited to local scales, which prevents studying effects of environmental factors across larger ecological gradients. Here, we compared inter-kill intervals and handling times of Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) across a large latitudinal gradient, from subarctic to the Mediterranean ecosystems, using a standardised dataset of predicted adult ungulate

Motivated by biotechnological prospects, there is increasing evidence that we may just be scraping the tip of the iceberg of poisonous marine invertebrates, among which the Polychaeta are promising candidates for bioprospecting. Here we show that an inconspicuous phyllodocid uses toxins in its uncanny feeding strategy. The worm, a jawless active predator characterised by its bright green colour, preys on larger invertebrates (including conspecifics) by extracting tissue portions with its powerful proboscis through suction. The animal is even able to penetrate through the valves and plates of l

When toads (Rhinella) are threatened they inflate their lungs and tilt the body towards the predator, exposing their parotoid macroglands. Venom discharge, however, needs a mechanical pressure onto the parotoids exerted by the bite of the predator. The structure of Rhinella jimi parotoids was described before and after manual compression onto the macroglands mimicking a predator attack. Parotoids are formed by honeycomb-like collagenous alveoli. Each alveolus contains a syncytial gland enveloped by a myoepithelium and is provided with a duct surrounded by differentiated glands. The epithelium

Horned lizards (Iguanidae, Phrynosomatinae, Phrynosoma) are morphologically specialized reptiles characterized by squat, tank-like bodies, short limbs, blunt snouts, spines and cranial horns, among other traits. They are unusual among lizards in the degree to which they specialize on a diet of ants, but exceptional in the number of pugnacious, highly venomous, stinging ants they consume, especially harvester ants (genus Pogonomyrmex). Like other iguanian lizards, they capture insect prey on the tongue, but unlike other lizards, they neither bite nor chew dangerous prey before swallowing. Inste

A computational model of a stealth strategy inspired by the apparent mating tactics of male hoverflies is presented. The stealth strategy (motion camouflage) paradoxically allows a predator to approach a moving prey in such a way that it appears to be a stationary object. In the model, the predators are controlled by neural sensorimotor systems that base their decisions on realistic levels of input information. They are shown to be able to employ motion camouflage to approach prey that move along both real hoverfly flight paths and artificially generated flight paths. The camouflaged approache

Fatal neonatal sibling aggression is common in predatory birds but has not been previously reported in wild mammals. Spotted hyena females are strongly masculinized, both anatomically and behaviorally, apparently by high levels of androgens during ontogeny. Neonates display elevated androgen levels, precocial motor development, and fully erupted front teeth. Litters are usually twins, and siblings fight violently at birth, apparently leading to the death of one sibling in same-sex litters, whereas in mixed-sex litters both siblings usually survive.

Innate defensive behaviors are essential for survival, allowing animals to appropriately respond to predatory threats. The anterior hypothalamic nucleus (AHN), a key region in the medial hypothalamic defense system, contains both GABAergic and glutamatergic neurons, reflecting a sophisticated balance between inhibitory and excitatory signaling. However, the specific behavioral functions of these neuronal populations have not been systemically examined. Here, we utilized fiber photometry and optogenetic stimulation to investigate the roles of AHN GABAergic, glutamatergic, and CaMKIIa+ neuronal

Nest predation is an important determinant of reproductive success and ground-nesting birds exhibit a variety of nest defence strategies to mitigate the risk. Many small-bodied, ground nesting birds rely on deceptive behaviours such as injury-feigning to reduce nest predation: we call this behaviour active deception. However, active deception may entail risks to adults, and passive deceptive behaviour, where individuals effectively sneak away from the nest by flushing at long distances, may be an alternative means of avoiding nest predation. We provide a simple model to demonstrate that these

The predatory soil mites Blattisocius mali and Stratiolaelaps scimitus share similar prey and occupy similar habitats. This study explores intraguild predation (IGP) by various life stages of B. mali on the developmental stages of S. scimitus across different starvation periods, and their predation preference for conspecific and heterospecific eggs or larvae in the absence of shared prey at 25 °C, 85 ± 5% RH, and a 16 L:8D photoperiod. All feeding developmental stages of B. mali consumed S. scimitus eggs and larvae; however, they did not kill S. scimitus deutonymphs or later developmental stag

Predatory mites and invertebrate-pathogenic fungi are important biological control tools for managing populations of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in horticultural field crops. Here, we evaluated strategies for the combined use of a mite-pathogenic strain of Beauveria bassiana and Neoseiulus californicus to suppress T. urticae populations on sweet pepper plants. First, we compared the performance of both biocontrol agents, applied alone or in combination, under greenhouse conditions. A decline in T. urticae populations was observed 7 days after the release of the predatory

Locating, tracking and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigated how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. We found that target motion predict

Predatory insect groups play key roles in terrestrial ecosystems and encompass a diverse array of distinct insect clades that utilize unique predatory strategies. Compared to insect herbivores and pollinators, the diversification patterns of predatory insect groups have received less attention. Here, we compile and analyze comprehensive fossil occurrence data from seven predatory insect groups, revealing heterogeneous diversification patterns both within each group and among different niche-based categories. To explore potential drivers of this heterogeneity, we examine nine abiotic and biotic

As hunter-gatherers, neandertal groups were mobile, moving within their territory based on the availability of targeted resources. Their mobility was an integral part of their subsistence strategies. Level D of the Axlor site is an ideal assemblage for reconstructing human habitats and seasonal mobility, as the accumulation of animal carcasses is predominantly of anthropogenic origin. The study of dental remains shows that 99.3% of the remains belong to herbivores. The most common taxa are red deer, Iberian ibex, and steppe bison. Also present are horse, roe deer, chamois and narrow-nosed rhin

The olfactory system is one of the primary decision-making mechanisms in arthropod foraging. Plants emit volatile compounds when attacked by herbivores, which can directly influence predator foraging. Given the diversity of agrochemicals used in soybean cultivation, it is necessary to investigate their possible effects indirect on natural enemies. In this study, the olfactory responses of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus were evaluated in soybean plants infested by Tetranychus urticae in the presence of the fungicides Strobilurin and Triazole, the herbicide Glyphosate, and the invasi

Patterns of collective escape of a bird flock from a predator are fascinating, but difficult to study under natural conditions because neither prey nor predator is under experimental control. We resolved this problem by using an artificial predator (RobotFalcon) resembling a peregrine falcon in morphology and behaviour. We imitated hunts by chasing flocks of corvids, gulls, starlings and lapwings with the RobotFalcon, and compared their patterns of collective escape to those when chased by a conventional drone and, in case of starlings, hunted by wild peregrine falcons. Active pursuit of flock
