Multiparametric analysis using MRI after preoperative embolization in meningioma: a preliminary study.

Quantitative evaluation of early perfusion and diffusion changes in meningiomas, including both intratumoral region and peritumoral edema, remains limited within the first 1-2 days postembolization. This study aimed to use multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate early structural and perfusion-related changes in both the intratumoral region and peritumoral edema after preoperative embolization of supratentorial meningiomas. Seven patients with supratentorial meningiomas underwent MRI before and 1-2 days after embolization with Embosphere microspheres (100-300 μm and 300-

Preoperative early physiologic warning scores in the parturients undergoing cesarean section: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Early physiologic warning scores (EPWS) are used to detect clinical deterioration by monitoring vital signs and early warning signs. However, their role in the obstetric population, particularly during the preoperative period before cesarean delivery, remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of three maternal early physiologic warning systems—Modified Early Obstetric Warning Score (MEOWS), Maternal Early Warning Criteria (MEWC), and Maternal Early Warning Triggers (MEWT)—in predicting short-term maternal and neonatal outcomes in the parturient patients underg

Is the daily use of vacuum erection device for a month before penile prosthesis implantation beneficial? a randomized controlled trial.

Patient concerns about penile length after penile prosthesis (PP) implantation for erectile dysfunction (ED) have significant impact on patients and their partners. In addition, corporal fibrosis is associated with difficult PP implantation. The preoperative use of vacuum erectile devices (VED) is an uncommon physical treatment for such concerns. Therefore, the current randomized controlled study assessed two outcomes: whether pre-operative VED use for a month before surgery would significantly increase flaccid stretched penile length (SPL) on the day of surgery, and facilitate easier corporal

Preoperative assessment and premedication in paediatrics.

Preoperative assessment and premedication represent important preparatory steps to ensuring a smooth and effective induction of anaesthesia. A thorough review of the child's medical history, previous anaesthetics, medications, allergies and family history is essential to design the optimal anaesthetic for the child and his/her surgery. Risks must be addressed with the parents as appropriate based on the local standards. Preoperative anxiolysis may assume several strategies, with premedication with a pharmacologic agent very common and most successful. This review focuses on the preoperative as

Evaluation of the cardiac status of patients with pectus excavatum in the pre- and postoperative period.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common chest wall deformity in youth. Although often considered cosmetic, studies report cardiopulmonary consequences (e.g., right-ventricular compression, conduction abnormalities) that may vary with age. The minimally invasive Nuss procedure is now predominant. Objective assessment of PE's functional burden and the benefits of surgery is clinically important. To compare pre- and postoperative cardiac status in PE patients and quantify physiologic burden and surgical benefit. METHODS: Single-center cohort of 175 patients undergoing chest

Pediatric Ureteroscopy.

In recent years, the incidence of nephrolithiasis in the pediatric population appears to be increasing. 1 This has placed a new emphasis on surgical management of stones in children. In the past, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy was the preferred management technique for stones in children. 2 More recently, though, advances in endoscopy have allowed ureteroscopy to be adapted to the pediatric population and this approach has become more frequently utilized not just for lower ureteral calculi but also for proximal ureteral and renal stones.

Pre- and postoperative predictors of phantom limb pain.

Phantom limb (PLP) as well as residual limb pain (RLP) are still a very significant problem after amputation and their causes are only partially known. Here we tested whether the predisposition for the frequency, duration and intensity of PLP and RLP is shared with other prior chronic pains and/or the presence of postamputation subacute pain. A week preoperatively we collected data using validated questionnaires, a pain diary and interviews on past chronic pain conditions, acute pain, depression, anxiety, pain interference, life control, social support and affective distress and pain ratings o

Posterior colporrhaphy does not affect the urethral closure mechanism.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Studies have suggested that a posterior vaginal wall prolapse might compress the urethra and mask stress urinary incontinence (SUI), much like an anterior vaginal wall prolapse. A recent study with urethral pressure reflectometry (UPR) has shown that the urethral closure mechanism deteriorates after anterior colporrhaphy; this could explain the occurrence of postoperative de novo SUI. We hypothesized that urethral pressure would also decrease after posterior colporrhaphy. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study where women with posterior vaginal wall

Morphometric analysis of iatrogenic breast asymmetry secondary to operative breast shape changes in thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Spontaneous surgical alterations of the distorted surface shape of thoracic cage in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) may relocate and remodel the bilateral breast mounds. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of scoliosis correction surgery on female breast morphology and to identify the risk factors for iatrogenic breast asymmetry secondary to operative breast shape changes in AIS. METHODS: Thoracic AIS girls undergoing correction surgery were reviewed. Ten parameters concerning morphometric and CT evaluations of breast profile and symmetry were measured. The d

Pre and post-operative psychological functioning in younger and older children with microtia.

OBJECTIVES: Microtia ranges from a smaller ear to the absence of the external ear and has been associated with psychosocial distress. Traditional ear reconstruction takes place beginning at age six. Use of an alloplastic implant allows for earlier surgery starting at age three, which may reduce potential negative psychological effects. However, few studies have examined psychosocial outcomes of ear reconstruction with groups that include young children. METHODS: Children (N = 23) with microtia and their parents completed two microtia-related scales, negative emotions and microtia social aware
