BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The loss or preservation of visual imagery in patients with cortical blindness may be helpful in resolving the controversial roles assigned by some researchers to the early visual cortex during the process of visual imagery.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Here we report a patient with complete permanent cortical blindness coupled with denial of the blindness (Anton syndrome) as a result of bilateral occipital infarction.
RESULTS: Interestingly, the patient's ability to visualize objects, color, and spatial imagery was preserved, although cerebral computed tomography, magnetic res

The insular cortex is located in the centre of the cerebral hemisphere, having connections with the primary and secondary somatosensory areas, anterior cingulate cortex, amygdaloid body, prefrontal cortex, superior temporal gyrus, temporal pole, orbitofrontal cortex, frontal and parietal opercula, primary and association auditory cortices, visual association cortex, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and motor cortex. Accordingly, dense connections exist among insular cortex neurons. The insular cortex is involved in the processing of visceral sensory, visceral motor, vestibular,

Multisensory interactions have been documented within low-level, even primary, cortices and at early post-stimulus latencies. These effects are in turn linked to behavioral and perceptual modulations. In humans, visual cortex excitability, as measured by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) induced phosphenes, can be reliably enhanced by the co-presentation of sounds. This enhancement occurs at pre-perceptual stages and is selective for different types of complex sounds. However, the source(s) of auditory inputs effectuating these excitability changes in primary visual cortex remain dispute

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) has been defined as complex visual hallucinations (CVH) due to visual loss. The underlying mechanism of CBS is not clear and the underlying pathophysiology of the visual hallucinations in CBS patients and pure visually impaired patients is still not clear.
METHODS: In our study, we have scanned three patients with eye disease and CBS (VH+) and three patients with eye disease without CBS (VH-) using FDG-PET.
RESULTS: Our results showed underactivity in the pons and overactivity in primary right left visual cortex and inferior parietal co

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique used as a therapeutic and experimental tool. It is FDA-approved for treating major depressive disorder in adults and has an excellent safety profile. rTMS is less well characterised in children but was recently approved as an augmentative treatment in adolescents (15-21 years). However, the adolescent brain is still undergoing structural and functional changes and the effect of rTMS on neurodevelopment is not understood.
OBJECTIVE: In the present study we used a mouse model to assess

We report a dissociation between two aspects of visuospatial processing in a patient with a profound impairment in the visual perception of objects ('visual form agnosia'). The orientation-in-depth of a visual field ('visual pitch') was found to systematically influence the elevation at which she perceived her own eye level, just as it does in normal individuals; but at the same time, she was unable to discriminate perceptually the orientation-in-depth of the same visual field, a trivial task for individuals with normal vision. These results suggest that, in the normal brain, the processes tha

Conscious reportability of visual input is associated with a bimodal neural response in the primary visual cortex (V1): an early-latency response coupled to stimulus features and a late-latency response coupled to stimulus report or detection. This late wave of activity, central to major theories of consciousness, is thought to be driven by the prefrontal cortex (PFC), responsible for "igniting" it. Here we analyzed two electrophysiological studies in mice performing different stimulus detection tasks and characterized neural activity profiles in three key cortical regions: V1, posterior parie

We investigated polysynaptic cortical pathways linking primary to multimodal sensory association areas in mice using transcranial flavoprotein imaging combined with sequential application of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES). Stimulation of primary visual cortex (V1) elicited activity in lateral and medial areas of secondary visual cortices (V2), which were reciprocally connected. Stimulation of V2 areas elicited activity in area 2. Similarly, corticocortical pathways from primary somatosensory cortex (S1) through the corresponding secondary somatosensory areas (S2) to area 2 were obse

Knowing whether we are moving or something in the world is moving around us is possibly the most critical sensory discrimination we need to perform. How the brain and, in particular, the visual system solves this motion-source separation problem is not known. Here, we find that motor, vestibular, and visual motion signals are used by the mouse primary visual cortex (VISp) to differentially represent the same visual flow information according to whether the head is stationary or experiencing passive versus active translation. During locomotion, we find that running suppresses running-congruent

BACKGROUND: Visuospatial working memory (vsWM), which is commonly impaired in schizophrenia, involves information processing across the primary visual cortex, association visual cortex, posterior parietal cortex, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Within these regions, vsWM requires inhibition from parvalbumin-expressing basket cells (PVBCs). Here, we analyzed indices of PVBC axon terminals across regions of the vsWM network in schizophrenia.
METHODS: For 20 matched pairs of subjects with schizophrenia and unaffected comparison subjects, tissue sections from the primary visual cortex

Cortical blindness refers to the loss of vision that occurs after destruction of the primary visual cortex. Although there is no sensory cortex and hence no conscious vision, some cortically blind patients show amygdala activation in response to facial or bodily expressions of emotion. Here we investigated whether direction of gaze could also be processed in the absence of any functional visual cortex. A well-known patient with bilateral destruction of his visual cortex and subsequent cortical blindness was investigated in an fMRI paradigm during which blocks of faces were presented either wit

Visual loss associated with brain damage is the single greatest cause of visual impairment in children in developed countries. Damage may occur in any of five separate visual systems: primary visual cortex, visual associative cortex area, optic radiations, optic nerves, and visual attention pathways. Improving our understanding of the pathophysiology of these causes for visual loss may lead to better rehabilitation and educational strategies for these children.

Background: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The increasing interest in the involvement of the cortical visual pathway in glaucomatous patients is due to the implications in recent therapies, such as neuroprotection and neuroregeneration. Objective: In this review, we outline the current understanding of brain structural, functional, and metabolic changes detected with the modern techniques of neuroimaging in glaucomatous subjects. Methods: We screened MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, LILACS, Trip Database, and NICE for original contributions published until 31

BACKGROUND: The ability to name objects depends partly on visual perception. We used positron emission tomography (PET) to measure activity-related changes in regional cerebral blood flow (r-CBF) in order to identify regions of the brain activated during visual object naming.
METHODS: Four right-handed volunteers were recruited. Following an intravenous injection of 15O-labeled water, r-CBF was measured during visual object naming, counting numbers, and resting. PET and MRI images were coregistered, the size of the brain was proportionally adjusted in each axis to Talairach's and Tournoux's a

The human primary visual cortex consists of a region buried in the calcarine sulcus and a region outside this sulcus on the free surface of the occipital lobe. Since the depth of the calcarine sulcus can be easily estimated in magnetic resonance images of the living human brain, in vivo morphometry of the human primary visual cortex would be feasible for studying development, intersubject variability and interhemispheric asymmetry if the sulcal depth or a correlated measure such as the intracalcarine surface area would be a precise and reliable estimate of the total volume of the human primary

Visual neuroscience benefits from high-quality datasets with neuronal responses to many images. Several neuroimaging datasets have been published in recent years, but no comparable dataset with spiking activity exists. Here, we introduce the THINGS ventral stream spiking dataset (TVSD). We extensively sampled neuronal activity in response to >25,000 natural images from the THINGS database in macaques, using high-channel-count implants in three key cortical regions: primary visual cortex (V1), V4, and the inferotemporal cortex. We showcase the utility of TVSD by using an artificial neural netwo

BACKGROUND: Peripheral homonymous scotomas beyond 30° from fixation are rare. The paucity of publications describing such visual field defects might be attributed to various factors, including the absence of severe symptoms, routine visual field assessment restricted to the central 30° with automated perimetry, and the collateral circulation to the occipital cortex. The aim of this study was to correlate the brain lesions and perimetric findings in 2 unusual cases of peripheral homonymous scotomas, with the anatomic location of the optic radiation and primary visual cortex.
METHODS: Two patie

Recently the authors showed that a computational model of visual saliency could account for changes in gaze behavior of monkeys with damage in the primary visual cortex. Here we propose a neural prosthesis to restore eye gaze behavior by electrically stimulating the superior colliculus to drive visual attention. The saliency computational model is used to calculate the stimulation parameters from a real-time camera stream. Our simulations demonstrate that electrodes implanted in the superior colliculus at 1.0mm spacing are, in principle, able to recover specifically those visual attention beha

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) affects both leptomeningeal and parenchymal blood vessels and is common in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In some vessels, CAA is accompanied by localized neuritic dystrophy around the affected blood vessel. The aim of this study was to assess the distribution and severity of perivascular neuritic dystrophy in primary visual and visual association cortices. The severity of perivascular neuritic dystrophy and Abeta deposition was scored in an association cortex (Brodmann area 18) and a primary cortex (Brodmann area 17) with double labeling immunohistochemistry for t
