Multilevel nanoimprint lithography with a binary mould for plasmonic colour printing.

Pigment-free colouration based on plasmonic resonances has recently attracted considerable attention for potential in manufacturing and other applications. For plasmonic colour utilizing the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configuration, the generated colour is not only dependent on the geometry and transverse dimensions, but also to the size of the vertical gap between the metal nanoparticles and the continuous metal film. The complexity of conventional fabrication methods such as electron beam lithography (EBL), however, limits the capacity to control this critical parameter. Here we demonstrate

Developing non-isocyanate urethane-methacrylate photo-monomers for 3D printing application.

Urethane-methacrylate photo-monomers were prepared via a non-isocyanate route for the 3D printing application. The monomers were synthesized through reacting aliphatic amines, i.e. 1,6-hexanediamine, 1,4-butanediol bis(3-aminopropyl) ether, or n-butylamine, with cyclic carbonates, i.e. ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate, followed by the methacrylation of the generated hydroxylurethanes. The effects of the chemical structure of monomers on their photo-reactivity and physicomechanical properties of the cured samples were studied. Propylene carbonate generated side methyl groups within the

Deducing a surgical dilemma using a novel three dimensional printing technique.

Persistent apical periodontitis even after nonsurgical retreatment demands for a surgical approach. This requires a thorough diagnosis and planning to eliminate the pathology and induce healing. This is sometimes challenging when the pathology is present in close relationship to the vital structures. In such cases, modern, sophisticated technology such as three-dimensional (3D) printing can come very handy in patient education as well as for planning and mock-up preparation of the surgery. In this case, a nonhealing persistent apical periodontitis in relation to 16 was surgically treated. Howe

BACKGROUND: Patients are frequently not satisfied with the outcome of chin augmentation. OBJECTIVES: We report the use of three-dimensional (3D) imaging and printing to design custom fit porous polyethylene chin implants. METHODS: Patients requesting chin augmentation received 3D computed tomography (CT) imaging of the facial area. Patients could select the chin contour they desired by viewing 3D images of their face and chin. A 3D mandible replicate was printed from the CT data, and used to sculpt the inner surface of the implant to match the shape of the mandible, and the outer surface to

Low-Cost 3D Printing Orbital Implant Templates in Secondary Orbital Reconstructions.

PURPOSE: Despite its increasing use in craniofacial reconstructions, three-dimensional (3D) printing of customized orbital implants has not been widely adopted. Limitations include the cost of 3D printers able to print in a biocompatible material suitable for implantation in the orbit and the breadth of available implant materials. The authors report the technique of low-cost 3D printing of orbital implant templates used in complex, often secondary, orbital reconstructions. METHODS: A retrospective case series of 5 orbital reconstructions utilizing a technique of 3D printed orbital implant te

Maximizing Fibroblast Adhesion on Protein-Coated Surfaces Using Microfluidic Cell Printing.

translation of in vitro cell based assays to in vivo cellular response is imprecise at best. The advent of three-dimensional cell cultures in addition to bioreactor type microfluidics has improved the situation. However, these technical advances cannot be easily combined due to practical limitations. Development of a vertical microfluidic cell printer overcomes this obstacle, providing the ability to more closely recapitulate complex cellular environments and responses. As a proof of concept, we investigated the adhesion of fibroblasts under flow on protein-coated surfaces using a novel vertic

Intervention development in occupational research: an example from the printing industry.

BACKGROUND: Intervention development research is an essential prerequisite of any study that attempts to determine whether specific interventions work to prevent work related injury and illness. METHODS: Focus groups (n = 5) and direct observational studies (n = 21) of printers were used to elicit key issues that would aid the development of subsequent interventions. Transcripts from these were analysed by standard qualitative methods to identify common and related themes. RESULTS: The views of managers differed significantly from those of print workers in a number of areas, and working prac
