Decision making among HIV+ drug using men who have sex with men: a preliminary report from the Chicago Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.

HIV+ substance-dependent individuals (SDIs) make significantly poorer decisions than HIV- SDIs, but the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this impairment have not been identified. We administered the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a measure of decision making under uncertain risk, and the Cups Task, a measure of decision making under specified risk, to a group of 56 HIV+ and 23 HIV- men who have sex with men (MSMs) with a history of substance dependence enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. The IGT provides no explicit information regarding the contingencies for each possible choice, an

Deep learning model for tongue cancer diagnosis using endoscopic images.

In this study, we developed a deep learning model to identify patients with tongue cancer based on a validated dataset comprising oral endoscopic images. We retrospectively constructed a dataset of 12,400 verified endoscopic images from five university hospitals in South Korea, collected between 2010 and 2020 with the participation of otolaryngologists. To calculate the probability of malignancy using various convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, several deep learning models were developed. Of the 12,400 total images, 5576 images related to the tongue were extracted. The CNN models

Formation of a motor memory by action observation.

Mirror neurons discharge with both action observation and action execution. It has been proposed that the mirror neuron system is instrumental in motor learning. The human primary motor cortex (M1) displays mirror activity in response to movement observation, is capable of forming motor memories, and is involved in motor learning. However, it is not known whether movement observation can lead directly to the formation of motor memories in the M1, which is considered a likely physiological step in motor learning. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to show that observation of

AI-enabled detection of QRS fragmentation from 12-lead electrocardiogram and its clinical relevance for predicting malignant arrhythmia onset.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiographic markers differentiating between death caused by ventricular arrhythmias and non-arrhythmic death could improve the selection of patients for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation. QRS fragmentation (fQRS) is a parameter of interest, but subject to debate. We investigated the association of an automatically quantified probability of fragmentation with the outcome in ICD patients. METHODS: From a single-center retrospective registry, all patients implanted with an ICD between January 1996 and December 2018 were eligible for inclusion. Patient

Estimating the Comparative Effectiveness of Feeding Interventions in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Demonstration of Longitudinal Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation.

Longitudinal data sources offer new opportunities for the evaluation of sequential interventions. To adjust for time-dependent confounding in these settings, longitudinal targeted maximum likelihood based estimation (TMLE), a doubly robust method that can be coupled with machine learning, has been proposed. This paper provides a tutorial in applying longitudinal TMLE, in contrast to inverse probability of treatment weighting and g-computation based on iterative conditional expectations. We apply these methods to estimate the causal effect of nutritional interventions on clinical outcomes among

Ultrasound and SWE-based transfer learning for predicting fibrotic NASH.

The aim of this study was to develop a combined deep-learning model utilizing liver ultrasound, liver elastography images, and clinical features to predict and diagnose fibrotic non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). A rat model of liver steatosis and fibrosis was established through a high-fat diet and subcutaneous CCl₄ injections. Two-dimensional ultrasound and shear wave elastography (SWE) images were acquired. Three deep learning models, based on the ResNet-18 architecture, were designed: (1) a pure image model using only liver ultrasound, (2) a pure image model using only liver elastograph

Convolutional Neural Networks for Segmentation of Pleural Mesothelioma: Analysis of Probability Map Thresholds (CALGB 30901, Alliance).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of probability map threshold on pleural mesothelioma (PM) tumor delineations generated using a convolutional neural network (CNN). One hundred eighty-six CT scans from 48 PM patients were segmented by a VGG16/U-Net CNN. A radiologist modified the contours generated at a 0.5 probability threshold. Percent difference of tumor volume and overlap using the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) were compared between the reference standard provided by the radiologist and CNN outputs for thresholds ranging from 0.001 to 0.9. CNN-derived contours consis

An Interpretable Multimodal Machine-Learning Model for Non-Invasive Preoperative Glioma Grading.

Background: Gliomas are the most common primary malignant tumors of the central nervous system. Accurate preoperative grading is essential for individualized surgical planning and treatment selection; however, reliable non-invasive prediction tools integrating multimodal preoperative data remain limited. This study aimed to develop and internally validate an interpretable machine-learning model for non-invasive glioma grading. Methods: Clinical and imaging data from 400 patients with pathologically confirmed gliomas were retrospectively collected. Twenty-four preoperative variables were analyz

Simultaneous representation of a spectrum of dynamically changing value estimates during decision making.

Decisions are based on value expectations derived from experience. We show that dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and three other brain regions hold multiple representations of choice value based on different timescales of experience organized in terms of systematic gradients across the cortex. Some parts of each area represent value estimates based on recent reward experience while others represent value estimates based on experience over the longer term. The value estimates within these areas interact with one another according to their temporal scaling. Some aspects of the representations ch

Neural tracking of auditory statistical regularities in adults with and without dyslexia.

Listeners implicitly use statistical regularities to segment continuous sound input into meaningful units, eg transitional probabilities between syllables to segment a speech stream into separate words. Implicit learning of such statistical regularities in a novel stimulus stream is reflected in a synchronization of neural responses to the sequential stimulus structure. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that neural tracking of the statistical stimulus structure is reduced in individuals with dyslexia who have weaker reading and spelling skills, and possibly also weaker statistical

A novel decision tree approach to predict the probability of conversion to multiple sclerosis in Iranian patients with optic neuritis.

BACKGROUND: assessing the risk of conversion to multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients with optic neuritis (ON) has been the topic of numerous studies. However, since the risk factors differ from population to population, the extension of conclusions is a matter of debate. This study focused on the Iranian patients with optic neuritis and assessed the probability of conversion to multiple sclerosis by using a machine-based learning decision tree. METHODS: in this retrospective, observational study the medical records of patients with optic neuritis from 2008 to 2018 were reviewed. Baseline visio

False memory for orthographically versus semantically similar words in adolescents with dyslexia: a fuzzy-trace theory perspective.

The presented research was conducted in order to investigate the connections between developmental dyslexia and the functioning of verbatim and gist memory traces-assumed in the fuzzy-trace theory. The participants were 71 high school students (33 with dyslexia and 38 without learning difficulties). The modified procedure and multinomial model of Stahl and Klauer (simplified conjoint recognition model) was used to collect and analyze data. Results showed statistically significant differences in four of the model parameters: (a) the probability of verbatim trace recollection upon presentation o

Electrophysiological correlates of incidentally learned expectations in human vision.

The human visual system is remarkably sensitive to environmental regularities, which can facilitate behavioral performance when sensory events conform to past experience. The point at which prior knowledge is integrated during visual perception is unclear, particularly for incidentally learned associations. One possibility is that expectation shapes neural activity prospectively, in an anticipatory fashion, allowing prior knowledge to affect the earliest stages of sensory processing. Alternatively, cognitive processes underlying object recognition and conflict detection may be necessary precur

The overconfidence effect in social prediction.

In five studies with overlapping designs and intents, subjects predicted a specific peer's responses to a variety of stimulus situations, each of which offered a pair of mutually exclusive and exhaustive response alternatives. Each prediction was accompanied by a subjective probability estimate reflecting the subjects' confidence in its accuracy--a measure validated in Study 5 by having subjects choose whether to "gamble" on the accuracy of their prediction or on the outcome of a simple aleatory event. Our primary finding was that in social prediction, as in other judgmental domains, subjects

It's worse than you thought: the feedback negativity and violations of reward prediction in gambling tasks.

The reinforcement learning theory suggests that the feedback negativity should be larger when feedback is unexpected. Two recent studies found, however, that the feedback negativity was unaffected by outcome probability. To further examine this issue, participants in the present studies made reward predictions on each trial of a gambling task where objective reward probability was indicated by a cue. In Study 1, participants made reward predictions following the cue, but prior to their gambling choice; in Study 2, predictions were made following their gambling choice. Predicted and unpredicted

Psychophysiological Outcome Responses in Human Pavlovian Fear Conditioning: A Prediction Error Analysis.

Prediction errors (PE) are thought to drive associative learning. While neural signals consistent with PE encoding have been identified, the expression of PE in psychophysiological indices remains debated. Here, we sought to fill this gap by investigating responses to unconditioned stimulus (US) occurrence and probability in skin conductance responses (SCR), pupil size responses (PSR), heart period responses (HPR), and respiration amplitude responses (RAR). Data set 1 consisted of eight published studies (N1 = 264) using differential fear conditioning with partial reinforcement (50%), and nove

Improving crowdsourcing for AI through cognitive-inspired data engineering.

Crowdsourcing offers a fast and cost-efficient approach to obtaining human-labeled datasets. However, crowdsourced datasets and the models trained on them can inherit the cognitive constraints and biases of their annotators. In a process we refer to as cognitive-inspired data engineering, we investigate whether ideas from cognitive science can be applied to mitigate the presence of cognitive constraints and cognitive biases in crowdsourced datasets and, as a result, improve the performance of models trained on these datasets. We evaluate our approach by crowdsourcing labels for medical image d

EEG microstate analysis and machine learning classification in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Microstate characterization of electroencephalogram (EEG) is a data-driven approach to explore the functional changes and interrelationships of multiple brain networks on a millisecond scale. This study aimed to explore the pathological changes of whole-brain functional networks in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) through microstate analysis and further to explore its potential value as an auxiliary diagnostic index. METHODS: Forty-eight OCD patients (33 with more than moderate anxiety symptoms, 15 with mild anxiety symptoms) and 52 healthy controls (HCs) were re
