Back to the future! Revisiting the physiological cost of negative work as a team-based activity for exercise physiology students.

We implemented a team-based activity in our exercise physiology teaching laboratory that was inspired from Abbott et al.'s classic 1952 Journal of Physiology paper titled "The physiological cost of negative work." Abbott et al. connected two bicycles via one chain. One person cycled forward (muscle shortening contractions, positive work) while the other resisted the reverse moving pedals (muscle lengthening contractions, negative work), and the cost of work was compared. This study was the first to link human whole body energetics with isolated muscle force-velocity characteristics. The labora

Combining simulated patients and simulators: pilot study of hybrid simulation in teaching cardiac auscultation.

Auscultation torsos are widely used to teach position-dependent heart sounds and murmurs. To provide a more realistic teaching experience, both whole body auscultation mannequins and torsos have been used in clinical examination skills training at the Medical Faculty of the University of Muenster since the winter term of 2008-2009. This training has since been extended by simulated patients, which are normal, healthy subjects who have undergone attachment of the electronic components of the auscultation mannequins to their chests to mimic pathophysiological conditions ("hybrid models"). The ac

CBL with integrated SDH versus CBL alone in esophageal surgery internship: a randomized controlled trial on clinical competence development.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer exhibits significant geographical and economic disparities, with social determinants of health (SDH) playing crucial roles in its occurrence and prognosis. While case-based learning (CBL) is mainstream in clinical internships, traditional CBL predominantly focuses on disease biology, often neglecting sociocultural contexts. At the study institution, medical students receive limited formal SDH education within the preclinical curriculum, and clinical rotations lack systematic SDH training components. Integrating SDH into medical curricula has become an internationa

The use of voiceovers and review games in teaching immunology.

Active learning and flipped classrooms have gained popularity in higher education due to their ability to improve educational outcomes. This study evaluated whether combining voiceover lectures and review games could improve learner engagement and satisfaction while achieving learning outcomes comparable to those of traditional immunology didactic lectures. A total of 123 first- and second-year medical students were randomly assigned to groups that took formative quizzes on immunology material after exposure to either: (i) a traditional didactic lecture, (ii) a voiceover lecture followed by an

Chronic Salicylate Toxicity Simulation.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic salicylate toxicity is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening poisoning that requires high clinical suspicion in order to make the diagnosis. We created a simulation case that challenges learners to analyze case information, construct a differential diagnosis of an elevated anion gap metabolic acidosis with respiratory alkalosis, and initiate treatment for this toxicity. METHODS: The simulation case was designed for emergency medicine residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows. The activity began with a brief overview of the monitors, equipment, and simulation

Defining and comparing learning actions in two simulation modalities: students training on a latex arm and each other's arms.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore, describe and compare learning actions that nursing students used during peripheral vein cannulation training on a latex arm or each other's arms in a clinical skills centre. BACKGROUND: Simulation-based training is thought to enhance learning and transfer of learning from simulation to the clinical setting and is commonly recommended in nursing education. What students actually are doing during simulation-based training is, however, less explored. The analysis of learning actions used during simulation-based training could contribute to development and improve

Impact of undergraduate medical training on housestaff problem-solving performance: implications for problem-based curricula.

This article reports a study comparing the problem-solving performance of housestaff with undergraduate medical training in either conventional or problem-based schools. After reading two clinical cases, residents were required to write differential diagnoses and pathophysiological explanations. Biomedical and clinical knowledge used and reasoning strategies were identified. The results suggest that housestaff performance is influenced by the nature of instruction. Housestaff trained in a conventional curriculum (CC) focused on patient information, separated biomedical from clinical knowledge,

Impact of clinical case discussions in anatomy on national exam performance: a 10-year longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional anatomy instruction often prioritizes structural memorization over clinical application. Although case-based learning is widely endorsed to bridge this theory-practice gap, longitudinal evidence regarding its sustained impact in foundational sciences remains limited, particularly concerning its performance over a decade amid massive enrollment expansion. METHODS: This 10-year longitudinal retrospective cohort study tracked seven clinical medicine cohorts (2015-2021). To maintain teaching quality amid a massive enrollment expansion initiated in 2018, cohorts 2015-2017 r

Pull through together or be detached? A qualitative study of experiential learning in nurse education during interaction in age suit simulation.

AIM: To illuminate nursing students' interactions during age suit simulation from the perspective of being a blind older person and being an attendant guiding the blind person. BACKGROUND: Nursing students' understanding of age related and long-term, often multiple health problems are crucial for providing person-centred care in the home. In age suit simulation students take the perspectives of an older person which can improve their general attitudes towards older persons. However, focusing on blindness in age suit simulation is a novel concept. DESIGN: The research design of this study is

The complementary effects of virtual reality and traditional simulation in nursing education: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based education plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between nursing theory and clinical practice. Although traditional scenario-based simulation is effective in enhancing clinical skills, it is often limited by its lack of situational fidelity. Conversely, virtual reality (VR) simulation provides highly immersive learning environments but is challenged by its inability to support genuine interpersonal interactions. There is a paucity of empirical evidence regarding the integration of the complementary strengths of these two modalities and the understanding of nursin

Integrating AI-Powered Digital Pathology With Case-Based Teaching: A Novel Paradigm for Renal Education in Medical School.

Medical students often struggle with understanding renal pathology due to its histological complexity and abstract clinical correlations. Traditional teaching approaches that rely on didactic lectures and static microscopy images frequently fail to engage learners or promote deep understanding. The emergence of digital pathology (DP) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools has opened new possibilities in medical education, especially in visual disciplines like pathology. Concurrently, case-based learning (CBL) and flipped classroom strategies are gaining traction for fostering active, clinicall

AI-assisted case-based learning and flipped classroom to improve clinical decision-making: a randomized controlled trial in reproductive medicine.

BACKGROUND: Efficient training of reproductive medicine clinicians is critical in the context of declining global fertility and increasing infertility. Traditional lecture‑based instruction often fails to sufficiently develop clinical decision‑making skills within limited residency rotations. Innovative strategies that integrate artificial intelligence (AI) with case‑based learning (CBL) and flipped classroom (FC) formats may enhance clinical reasoning, however rigorous evidence in reproductive medicine education remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 5

Effects of standardized patient simulation combined with online case-based precision learning on early on-call anxiety among junior pediatric surgeons: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Junior pediatric surgeons often experience marked anxiety when undertaking independent on-call duties for the first time, largely due to limited clinical experience, high decision-making pressure, and heightened sensitivity to patient safety. Traditional lecture-based teaching models may be insufficient in preparing trainees for complex, dynamic, and high-risk on-call situations. This study aimed to investigate whether a precision teaching model combining emergency-oriented standardized patient simulation (SPS) with online case-based learning (CBL) could alleviate on-call-related a

Starting from the end: The cemetery as a learning venue.

Medical students encounter patient deaths throughout their training and tend to cope with death under the pretence of curing to fight off the imminence of death, rarely pondering the true meaning of mortality. This assumed numbness often makes them harsh, insecure, and somehow oblivious to the human plight of patients and their families. The Covid-19 pandemic has made the need for reflection on mortality even more significant. This commentary discusses a cemetery visit as part of the clinical ethics training of medical students. On this "existential trip", students address their perceptions, f
