BACKGROUND: Skeletal Class III malocclusion causing mandibular prognathism, maxillary retrognathism, or a combination of both, has widely varying prevalence by ethnicity. The objective of this research is to investigate the prevalence of contributing factors in its development across different age and sex groups of Iranians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 233 lateral cephalograms of patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who had referred our orthodontics center from 2015 to 2024. In the sagittal dimension, the samples were categorized into four groups: retrognathic maxilla, prog

The etiology of Angle class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry has not been fully elucidated. To investigate the etiology, patients with asymmetric prognathism (n = 30) from a single institution were assessed for previously undiagnosed torticollis and cranial base asymmetry. Presence of torticollis was determined by measuring restricted head movement when turning the head against a wall and cranial base tilt with upward gaze. Cranial base asymmetry was evaluated by preoperative three-dimensional computed tomography scans. Thirty-one percent of patients with prognathism presented with concu

This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a young woman with a Class II malocclusion and maxillomandibular prognathism. One orthodontic mini- implant was placed in the posterior area of the palate to provide anchorage for?a transpalatal arch. The force for molar distalization was applied using an elastic chain from the lever arm inserted on the transpalatal arch to the mini-implant. Two sliding jigs were applied buccally as a complement for Class II malocclusion correction. This system created an efficient mechanotherapy for maxillary molar distalization. The active treatment period

Facial asymmetry is often seen in patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism and is associated with deformities in the maxillofacial and head regions. The maxillofacial deviation is three-dimensional and affects not only the lateral deviation of the mandible and midface, but also the cranium. This study conducted a three-dimensional morphological evaluation of the cranial base morphology of patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism (ANB < 0°, Wits < 0 mm) with the aim of examining the relationship between deformities of the head region and facial asymmetry. Data obtained from computed t

OBJECTIVES: Despite recommendations for early treatment of hereditary Angle Class III syndrome, late pubertal growth may cause a relapse requiring surgical intervention. This study was performed to identify predictors of successful Class III treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight Class III patients treated with a chincup were retrospectively analyzed. Data were collected from the data archive, cephalograms, and casts, including pretreatment (T0) and posttreatment (T1) data, as well as long-term follow-up data collected approximately 25 years after treatment (T2). Each patient was assi

Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) is commonly used to correct mandibular prognathism or retrognathism. Patients with mandibular prognathism or retrognathism may also present with a prominent mandibular angle. In this paper, we share our experience on BSSRO with mandibular angle resection. Eleven patients who were treated from July 2014 to December 2016 were included in this study. The mandibular angle was resected through the medial side of the mandible after BSSRO. The mandibular angle measurements of the patients changed significantly after surgery (p < 0.05). Unanticipated fr

The intraoral vertical osteotomy is a versatile and simple technique usually applied to correct mandibular prognathism. Its greatest advantages include ease of performance and minimum neurosensory disturbances, whereas maxillomandibular fixation is pointed as its major disadvantage. Another important concern about this technique is condylar displacement, which may lead to temporomandibular dysfunction. Technical notes to avoid condylar luxation are discussed after 15 years of experience using this osteotomy as the technique of choice to correct mandibular prognathism. Three similar cases are p

Variable degrees of macroglossia have been noted in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Past studies have shown that a major effect of the macroglossia is protrusion of dentoalveolar structures, resulting in an anterior open bite and a prognathic mandibular appearance secondary to an abnormally obtuse gonial angle and increased effective mandibular length. In our series of 11 Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome patients we have observed that early correction of the macroglossia by means of partial glossectomy has resulted in decreased anterior open bite and mandibular prognathism as compared wi

BACKGROUND: Class III malocclusion is a maxillofacial disorder that is characterised by a concave profile and can be attributed to both genetic inheritance and environmental factors. It is a clinical challenge due to our limited understanding of its aetiology. Revealing its prototypical diversity will contribute to our sequential exploration of the underlying aetiological information. The objective of this study was to characterize phenotypic variations of Class III malocclusion via a lateral cephalometric analysis in a community of Chinese individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the soft-tissue profiles of matched Class I adolescent European Americans and Mexican Americans. The secondary aim was to explain profile differences based on group differences in soft-tissue thickness, skeletal morphology, dental position, and tooth size.
METHODS: The study pertained to 207 untreated Class I adolescents, including 93 Mexican Americans and 114 European Americans. Lateral cephalometric and model analyses were performed to quantify morphologic differences. Two-way analyses of variance were used to evaluate ethnicity, sex, a

The shape and size of the craniofacial complex in 35 adults with Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY) were analyzed cephalometrically and compared with 60 control males. Twenty-four angular and 18 linear measurements were obtained for each subject. The results showed that the 47,XXY males were different from the controls in several areas of the craniofacial skeleton. Most of the differences were located in the cranial base and the cranial base angle (p < 0.02). The length of the maxillary base was greater (p < 0.05) and more prognathic (p < 0.01) in the study group. The mandible was also longer and m

The antero-posterior diameter of the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) at the level of the soft palate and base of the tongue was assessed in age-matched females with a normal mandible (n=31), mandibular retrognathism (n=30) or mandibular prognathism (n=38). All subjects were examined by lateral cephalometry. Measured variables were corrected with the use of appropriate regression equations to eliminate the effects of head posture on the PAS. The corrected data showed more clear-cut differences in the PAS among the three groups than did the measured data. Pharyngeal airway diameter was largest in

Cephalometric investigations were carried out on 16 macerated skulls of anencephalic fetuses aged around 6 months and compared with the values obtained from a group of 18 normally developed specimens. The skull geometry of the anencephalic fetuses was different from normal proportions: anencephalic fetuses showed a clear mandibular prognathism, and a maxilla tilted in anterior direction. The values describing length of maxilla and length of the anterior cranial base, and NS-Ba angle were found to be within the normal range. From the results it can be concluded that the defective development of

In this study, we investigated gingival enlargement in patients with acromegaly as a component of the disease. Eleven patients (5 males, 6 females) were evaluated. Diagnosis was confirmed with typical clinical features and laboratory. Oral examinations were carried out by the same periodontist. During the examination, plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depths, and gingival enlargement values were evaluated. Duration of the disease was between 0.2 and 13 yr. Seven patients had pituitary macroadenomas and four had microadenomas during their initial diagnosis. Only one patient was newly

This study investigated compensation in skeletal Class III subjects to compare various severities of abnormal jaws. A retrospective analysis of 137 skeletal Class III cephalograms (63 males and 74 females) was conducted, with cephalometric assessments determining skeletal and dental values. The results were compared with Class I cephalograms. Incisor compensation was examined by pairing normal jaws with varied abnormal jaws, classified by severity using one standard deviation (SD). Statistical analyses included Kruskal-Wallis tests, Bonferroni tests, Spearman's correlations, and multiple linea

BACKGROUND: Class III malocclusion, characterized by maxillary retrusion or mandibular prognathism, poses significant challenges in orthodontic treatment. Early intervention with facemask therapy aims to correct skeletal discrepancies, but outcomes vary. This study evaluates the efficacy of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) and facemask therapy in improving maxillomandibular relationships in growing children with Class III malocclusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 37 patients (mean age 7.5 ± 1.1 years) treated with RPE and Petit facemask therapy. Cephalomet

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that midline basicranial orientation and posterior cranial base length are discriminating factors between adults of different populations and its potential maxillo/mandibular disharmonies.
DESIGN: Twenty-nine 2D landmarks of the midline cranial base, the face and the mandible of dry skull X-rays from three major populations (45 Asians, 34 Africans, 64 Europeans) were digitized and analysed by geometric morphometrics. We used, first, MANOVA to test for mean shape differences between populations; then, principal components analysis (PCA) to assess the overall

The purpose of this study was to perform a review of the literature related to the anatomy of the mandibular lingula and to provide information to improve the execution of effective anaesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve in clinical practices of the mandible. Prognathic mandibles have a lingula that is located more posterior and superior than non-prognathic mandibles. Most of the lingulae are located above the occlusal plane, but it is occasionally located at or below the occlusal plane. The lingula of the triangular shape was generally located slightly more superior and posterior than oth
