Ticagrelor for the treatment of atherosclerotic disease: insights from the PARTHENON clinical development program.

Ticagrelor (P2Y12 receptor antagonist) is presently indicated for preventing atherothrombotic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome and patients with a history of myocardial infarction. The PARTHENON clinical development program comprises five randomized, controlled, cardiovascular, indication-seeking outcome studies, aiming to evaluate ticagrelor across the spectrum of patients with atherothrombotic disease. Results of two large-scale trials support a benefit for ticagrelor in patients with acute coronary syndrome (PLATO; ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00391872) and in patients with a histo

Getting Off: development of a model program for gay and bisexual male methamphetamine users.

An evidence-based gay-specific cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) intervention for methamphetamine-using gay and bisexual men was adapted for use in a community-based setting, thereby moving research into practice. The 48-session, 16-week GCBT intervention was revised to 24 sessions requiring 8 weeks and renamed Getting Off: A Behavioral Treatment Intervention for Gay and Bisexual Male Methamphetamine Users. GCBT was modified for implementation within the limited resources and capacity of community-based organizations while also retaining drug use and HIV risk reduction outcomes. Since 2007,

Development and evaluation of an automatic acne lesion detection program using digital image processing.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Existing acne grading methods, which depend on overall impression, require a long training period and there is a high degree of variability among raters, including trained dermatologists. The use of lesion count provides fair reproducibility but the method is time consuming. New technologies in photographic equipment and software allow solutions to the problem of acne evaluation. This study was conducted to develop the automatic acne lesion program and evaluation of its usefulness. METHODS: We made the conditions to optimize characterization of acne lesions and developed t

Bolstering the pathway to promote scientific workforce diversity: the UCSF Mid-Career Development Program.

PROBLEM: Academic medical institutions face longstanding challenges in recruiting and retaining historically excluded, midcareer research faculty. Although progress in recruiting has been documented, retention has focused on individuals rather than a system-level approach. APPROACH: The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Mid-Career Development Program was launched in 2020 to advance and retain historically excluded research faculty (scholars) and their historically excluded mentees via a novel program that provided faculty discretionary funding of $150,000 per person over 2 years,

Pulsed Electrical Stimulation for Knee Osteoarthritis: Reappraisal of a 21-Year Clinical Development Program.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) remains a leading cause of pain and disability, yet few nonoperative therapies have demonstrated durable clinical benefit or potential effects on structural disease progression. Pulsed electrical stimulation (PES) was investigated extensively over two decades, but this evidence has received little attention in the contemporary era of disease-modifying OA research. A structured evidence synthesis was performed of five principal prospective clinical investigations evaluating capacitively coupled PES for symptomatic knee OA. These included two randomized double-blind plac

Strategic Development of a Larynx and Trachea Transplantation Program: The Mayo Clinic Arizona Experience.

Medical advances have enabled the realization of vascularized composite allografts and to date have demonstrated reasonably successful graft survival rates. Larynx and Trachea Transplantation (LT) has long been contemplated as a therapeutic option for severe laryngeal trauma and patients following total laryngectomy. Progress has been limited most likely due to lack of awareness as an option, technical and surgical expertise, limited transplant centers worldwide, need for multidisciplinary engagement from hospital leadership, Otolaryngology, and transplant medicine to build a successful progra

Program Development of Integrated Psychological Services for Hospitalized Patients with Intravenous Drug Use Histories.

Amid rising trends in opioid use, hospitalizations for health conditions secondary to intravenous drug use are becoming more common. Such patients often require prolonged hospitalizations and frequently present with substance use histories, co-occurring mental health diagnoses, and unique behavioral health needs. These issues can adversely impact completion of medical treatment and place added burden on hospital staff. There is a growing need for medical institutions to develop policies and procedures which address the specific emotional, behavioral, and substance use needs of this patient pop
