The use of a computer-based program focused on the syllabic method to support early literacy in children with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND: Children with cochlear implants (CIs) often lag behind children with normal hearing (NH) in early literacy skills. Furthermore, the development of language skills associated with their emergent literacy skills seems to depend on good auditory access. Supporting language acquisition and early literacy in children with CIs may prevent difficulties in primary school. The use of technology may facilitate auditory and speech recovery in children with CIs, but evidence on computer-based early literacy programs is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates (a) the effects of a computer-

Writing and reading: connections between language by hand and language by eye.

Four approaches to the investigation of connections between language by hand and language by eye are described and illustrated with studies from a decade-long research program. In the first approach, multigroup structural equation modeling is applied to reading and writing measures given to typically developing writers to examine unidirectional and bidirectional relationships between specific components of the reading and writing systems. In the second approach, structural equation modeling is applied to a multivariate set of language measures given to children and adults with reading and writ

Language Intervention in Down Syndrome: A Systematic Literature Review.

Language is one of the most affected areas in people with Down syndrome and is one of the most influential throughout their development. That is why the linguistic difficulties presented by this group are susceptible to treatment through different specific interventions. However, little emphasis has been placed on the effectiveness and importance of this type of intervention in improving their language skills. Therefore, this work aimed to carry out a systemic literature review of language intervention programs that have been carried out in the last 20 years. To this end, a total of 18 article

Reading against all odds: a pilot study of two deaf students with dyslexia.

Learning to read and write is a challenge for most deaf children due to their limited experiences with, and access to, spoken language. In the case of deaf students who have difficulty processing visual print, literacy becomes an even greater challenge. The study piloted an intervention procedure that incorporated the principles of automaticity, repetition, functional vocabulary, and a positive teacher-student relationship as recommended in programs for struggling readers and adapted them to the needs of two deaf high school students with dyslexia in an American Sign Language-English bilingual

Speech therapy after total laryngectomy and esophageal replacement in a preschool patient: a case study.

This case study reports the development of a speech and language therapy program for a preschool boy laryngectomized at age two and three-quarters. Etiology was attributed to the accidental ingestion of lye, which caused severe burns and subsequent damage to both the larynx and esophagus. During the 20-month hospital stay, colon transplantation to the pharynx and laryngectomy were performed and a speech therapy program was initiated. The speech pathologist worked closely with the patient by stimulating his speech and language, developing his articulation skills, and finally providing him with

Linguistic coding deficits in foreign language learners.

As increasing numbers of colleges and universities require a foreign language for graduation in at least one of their degree programs, reports of students with difficulties in learning a second language are multiplying. Until recently, little research has been conducted to identify the nature of this problem. Recent attempts by the authors have focused upon subtle but ongoing language difficulties in these individuals as the source of their struggle to learn a foreign language. The present paper attempts to expand upon this concept by outlining a theoretical framework based upon a linguistic c

Recognizing and Resisting Ableist Language in Schools: Suggestions for School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists and Related Professionals.

PURPOSE: The language that school professionals use to describe disabled students can reveal and perpetuate ableist assumptions. Professionals' language choices can also challenge ableist attitudes to help create more inclusive, equitable learning environments. This tutorial seeks to guide speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other school professionals to identify ableist language, understand the ableist ideologies that such language reveals, and develop strategies to implement ways of communicating with and about disabled students that align with an anti-ableist stance. We offer a brief de

Otitis media, hearing loss, and child development: a NICHD conference summary.

Growing evidence indicates that a significant relationship exists between the conductive hearing loss resulting from recurrent otitis media (OM) during the first 3-5 years of life and subsequent problems in acquisition of language and academic skills. To assess current knowledge of OM and its consequences for cognitive and linguistic development, to exchange viewpoints, and, if possible, to determine directions for future research, a conference was sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Among the epidemiologic studies cited, some found a very high in

Pathways Into Literacy: The Role of Early Oral Language Abilities and Family Risk for Dyslexia.

The present study investigated the role of early oral language and family risk for dyslexia in the two developmental pathways toward reading comprehension, through word reading and through oral language abilities. The sample contained 237 children (164 at family risk for dyslexia) from the Dutch Dyslexia Program. Longitudinal data were obtained on seven occasions when children were between 4 and 12 years old. The relationship between early oral language ability and reading comprehension at the age of 12 years was mediated by preliteracy skills and word-decoding ability for the first pathway an

Presurgical Language Mapping in Patients With Intractable Epilepsy: A Review Study.

INTRODUCTION: about 20% to 30% of patients with epilepsy are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and one third of these are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Surgical resection of the epileptogenic tissue is a well-established method for treating patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Determining language laterality and locality is an important part of a comprehensive epilepsy program before surgery. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) has been increasingly employed as a non-invasive alternative method for the Wada test and cortical stimulation. Sensitive and accurate language ta

An Overview of the Effect of Age at Time of Cochlear Implantation on Language Outcomes in Jordan: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear Implantation (CI) surgery has long been used as an effective treatment for children with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss who failed to benefit from the use of hearing aids. Among other factors, the age at which implantation is done is thought to have an effect on the speech progression outcome of patients postoperatively. OBJECTIVES: The Jordanian CI Program has limited resources, and Jordan has an underdeveloped early screening and intervention program for deafness. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of age at time of implantation on receptive

The efficacy of rhythmic training for enhancing language and reading skills in children: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The human brain has the inherent ability to extract temporal regularities from sensory input and to synchronize with them. Language production and comprehension rely heavily on this fundamental ability. Rhythm-based training programs designed to boost language functions, especially across childhood, aim to facilitate the brain's capacity to capture regular patterns in verbal streams. This systematic review critically evaluates the evidence on the efficacy of rhythmic training in improving linguistic skills in typically developing children as well as in children with language or rea

Second Language Word Learning through Repetition and Imitation: Functional Networks as a Function of Learning Phase and Language Distance.

Introduction and Aim: Repetition and imitation are among the oldest second language (L2) teaching approaches and are frequently used in the context of L2 learning and language therapy, despite some heavy criticism. Current neuroimaging techniques allow the neural mechanisms underlying repetition and imitation to be examined. This fMRI study examines the influence of verbal repetition and imitation on network configuration. Integration changes within and between the cognitive control and language networks were studied, in a pair of linguistically close languages (Spanish and French), and compar
