BACKGROUND: Individuals with patellar tendinopathy often exhibit impaired proprioception, which may contribute to symptom persistence and injury recurrence. A parallel robotic system based on a musculoskeletal knee model has shown valid and reliable performance for assessing joint position sense (JPS). This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of a protocol for the robotic assessment of knee proprioception in individuals with patellar tendinopathy and to compare their proprioceptive performance with that of healthy controls.
METHODS: Twenty-one participants with patellar tendinopathy (PTG)

BACKGROUND: Sensory and proprioceptive dysfunction in the lower extremities occurs in up to 89% of hemiparetic stroke patients and contributes to gait abnormalities, postural instability, and increased fall risk. However, the specific relationships between objectively measured proprioceptive deficits and quantitative balance/gait parameters remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated the associations between lower extremity proprioceptive impairments (foot sole sensation, position sense, and kinesthesia) and objective measures of balance and gait in hemiparetic individuals.

BACKGROUND: "Proprioception training" is widely advocated in rehabilitation and sports practice, yet the term encompasses heterogeneous constructs, interventions, and outcomes. Many trials infer proprioceptive benefits from surrogate outcomes (balance, strength, or pain) rather than direct psychophysical indices.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine how proprioception is defined and measured, and how improvement is claimed, in randomized controlled trials.
METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were se

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive deficits are common among stroke survivors and can negatively impact their balance and postural control. However, there has been little evaluation of the change in proprioceptive deficits in the lower limbs over time after stroke. This study aimed to examine proprioceptive deficits over time after stroke in both the affected and "unaffected" lower limbs.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included sixty first-time unilateral stroke survivors and twenty age-matched healthy individuals. Participants after stroke were divided into three subgroups based on different ti

BACKGROUND: Neurological diseases such as stroke or Parkinson's disease are often accompanied by weakening or loss of proprioception, which seriously affects the motor control ability of the patients. However, proprioception rehabilitation is challenging due to the pain caused by impaired joints and the hard efforts that patients have to make during training. This study investigated the cross-transfer effect of short-term visuomotor training to the untrained wrist from the trained wrist, from both views of behavioral results and brain activity analyses.
METHODS: Thirty healthy volunteers aged

BACKGROUND: Impaired ankle proprioception strongly predicts balance dysfunction in chronic stroke. However, only sparse data on ankle position sense and no systematic data on ankle motion sense dysfunction in stroke are available. Moreover, the lesion sites underlying impaired ankle proprioception have not been comprehensively delineated. Using robotic technology, this study quantified ankle proprioceptive deficits post-stroke and determined the associated brain lesions.
METHODS: Twelve adults with chronic stroke and 13 neurotypical adults participated. A robot passively plantarflexed a parti

BACKGROUND: Although the use of KT has increased considerably in the clinical practice in the last years, there is limited evidence about the effects of its application in proprioception.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of KT on joint position sense and force sense on the wrist of healthy subjects.
METHODS: Fifty-four subjects were analyzed in a randomized, crossover, single-blind study design. To determine the force sense, the subjects had to reach 50% of their maximum grip force. Wrist joint position sense was assessed during active repositioning tests at the tar

To investigate differences in proprioception using four proprioceptive tests in children with and without hypermobility. Additionally, it was tested if the results on one proprioceptive test predict the results on the other tests. Of the children (8-11years), 100 were classified as normal mobile (Beighton score 0-4) and 50 as hypermobile (Beighton score 5-9). To test proprioception, in the upper extremity the unilateral and bilateral joint position reproduction tasks were used and for the lower extremity the loaded and unloaded wedges task. No differences were found in any of the proprioceptio

BACKGROUND: Chronic joint hypermobility has been attributed to repetitive ligamentous microtrauma, benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS), or genetic connective tissue disorders that lead to pain and functional impairment, especially among females. Chronic wrist hypermobility (CWH) prevalence, etiology, and effects on proprioception, strength, and function have yet to be established.
PURPOSE: This pilot study aimed to determine the CWH prevalence among adults; its effects on proprioception, strength, and function; and whether these effects are gender based.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a quasi

PURPOSE: Although it is evident that some patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have proprioceptive deficit in peripheral joints, knowledge on the proprioceptive function of the deformed spine is limited. Nonetheless, spinal proprioception in AIS may be affected three-dimensionally, prior studies only focussed on evaluating peripheral proprioception in single plane. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel spinal proprioception assessment using three-dimensional motion analysis in patients with AIS.
METHODS: Participants were included if they had a primary diagnosis of AIS

BACKGROUND: Cervical proprioception is critical in the maintenance of posture and movements, so its assessment in different cervical conditions has gained importance in recent clinical practice. Studies reporting this assessment in subjects with cervical spondylosis (CS) have not previously been investigated. The goals of the study are (1) comparison of joint position error (JPE) in subjects with CS to healthy control group. (2) Correlation of neck pain intensity to cervical proprioception in patients with CS.
METHODS: In a Cross-sectional study, 132 subjects with CS and 132 healthy age-match

INTRODUCTION: The use of Kinesio tape (KT) to improve proprioception is a matter of considerable debate. In comparison, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament is a sufficiently well-investigated injury with a proven compromise of proprioception. The objective of the present study was to assess a supportive effect on proprioception after KT application, taking the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture as an example.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients who had suffered an ACL rupture, confirmed clinically and by magnetic resonance imaging, and who were treated conservatively o

Low amplitude mechanical noise vibration has been shown to improve somatosensory acuity in various clinical groups with comparable deficiencies through a phenomenon known as Stochastic Resonance (SR). This technology showed promising outcomes in improving somatosensory acuity in other clinical patients (e.g., Parkinson's disease and osteoarthritis). Some degree of chronic somatosensory deficiency in the knee has been reported following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. In this study, the effect of the SR phenomenon on improving knee somatosensory acuity (proprioception a

BackgroundDespite common use of proprioceptive retraining interventions in people with chronic, idiopathic neck pain, evidence that proprioceptive dysfunction exists in this population is lacking. Determining whether proprioceptive dysfunction exists in people with chronic neck pain has clear implications for treatment prescription.PurposeThe aim of this study was to synthesize and critically appraise all evidence evaluating proprioceptive dysfunction in people with chronic, idiopathic neck pain by completing a systematic review and meta-analysis.Data sourcesMEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed, Allied and

[Purpose] This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of repetitive passive movement and repetitive active movement on proprioception in forearm supination. [Subjects] This study had a cross-sectional design. Twenty-three right-handed healthy subjects were recruited. All subjects randomly received both repetitive passive movement and repetitive active movement (repetitive passive/active movement at 120°/s with 60 repetitions over a 0-80° range). Active and passive joint repositioning of all subjects was measured using the error score for position sense, both before and after re

CONTEXT: The importance of the sensorimotor system in maintaining a stable knee joint has been recognized. As individual entities, knee-joint proprioception, landing kinematics, and knee muscles play important roles in functional joint stability. Preventing knee injuries during dynamic tasks requires accurate proprioceptive information and adequate muscular strength. Few investigators have evaluated the relationship between knee proprioception and strength and landing kinematics.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between knee proprioception and strength and landing kinematics.
