A case report of heterotopic ossifications in abdominal incision scar.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops when bone formation appears in soft tissues, usually after an injury or major surgery. Timely and accurately diagnosing of this rare event is essential due to the possibility of misdiagnosis as a maintained foreign body, infection, incisional neoplastic recurrence, and metastatic or primary neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we present a 57-year-old man who was operated for peritonitis due to perforated appendicitis, and an asymptomatic HO was accidentally found on an incisional line of previous open prostatectomy about 5 years ea

Morphometry in surgical pathology.

The potential role of morphometry in surgical pathology is discussed. Specific areas in which morphometry could be helpful are in (1) identifying malignant cells in lesions that are largely composed of benign-appearing cells (e.g., follicular thyroid neoplasms), (2) defining reference points in apparent continua (e.g., in the progression from normal colon to adenoma to adenocarcinoma), (3) distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions with similar appearances (e.g., fibromatosis and fibrosarcoma of the soft tissue) and (4) distinguishing between similar-appearing types of malignant neopl

Neoplasms Associated with the Onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Case-Control Study Using the All of Us Cohort.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the association between prior diagnoses of neoplasms and the onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted using health records from 2 724 individuals in the All of Us Program, a longitudinal cohort of U.S. adults. Odds ratios (OR) and Fisher's exact tests were used to evaluate associations between neoplasms and AMD in a matched cohort. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis assessed how neoplasms affected time to AMD onset. RESULTS: Benign neoplasms of the colon (OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.55-2.33), skin (OR: 1.4

Lumbosacral pain in a patient with psoriatic arthritis: when the rheumatic disease is innocent.

Lumbar pain is a very common symptom that derives from benign musculoskeletal conditions, rheumatic inflammatory diseases, neoplasms, and referred and/or nociplastic pain. A 70-year-old man with psoriatic arthritis presented with early-onset lumbosacral pain without evident red flags. Symptomatic treatment was unhelpful. Radiographic imaging showed subtle signs of a disease that could easily be missed. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a massive prostatic malignancy with bone (sacral and iliopubic) metastasis. Awareness must be given not to disregard every lumbar pain as part of the preexist

Effects of Muscle Strength Training in Prostate Cancer: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in males. Treatment options cause a series of side effects that can lead to a deterioration in the physical and quality of life of patients, such as musculoskeletal changes, atrophy or muscle weakness, due to the testosterone suppression. Scientific evidence has shown that exercise mitigates the side effects induced by cancer treatment. This study aimed to analyse the effects of muscular strength work on the organism of patients with prostate cancer in the treatment phase. MATERIAL AND METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, SPORT

Multiparametric MRI before and after Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer: Pearls and Pitfalls for the Reporting Radiologist.

In this era of personalized precision medicine, the accuracy of multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) and targeted biopsy in helping detect low-volume clinically significant prostate cancer has rekindled interest in focal therapy for primary prostate cancer. Such therapy may reduce the debilitating morbidity of radical whole-gland treatment. Post-focal therapy mpMRI surveillance is critical for assessing oncologic efficacy. Radiologists interpreting post-focal therapy mpMRI must be familiar with expected posttreatment changes and pitfalls in assessing posttreatment recurrence. In this review, the author

Ex vivo fluorescence confocal microscopy: prostatic and periprostatic tissues atlas and evaluation of the learning curve.

Ex vivo fluorescence confocal microscopy (FCM) is an optical technology that provides fast H&E-like images of freshly excised tissues, and it has been mainly used for "real-time" pathological examination of dermatological malignancies. It has also shown to be a promising tool for fast pathological examination of prostatic tissues. We aim to create an atlas for FCM images of prostatic and periprostatic tissues to facilitate the interpretation of these images. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate the learning curve of images interpretation of this new technology. Eighty fresh and unprepared biopsie

Possible involvement of prolactin in endocrine-resistant metastatic prostate cancer.

The hormone resistance of prostate cancer has been proved to depend at least in part on enhanced neuroendocrine activity and the resultant increase in blood concentrations of chromogranin A. Other experimental observations have suggested the involvement of prolactin (PRL), which appears to be a potential growth factor for prostate cancer. Abnormally high levels of PRL have been detected in metastatic prostate cancer, but the clinical significance of this finding has still to be clarified. In an attempt to explain the prognostic significance of serum PRL levels in prostate cancer, in this preli

Lymphoma presenting as cancer of the glans penis: a case report.

Penile lymphoma is a very rare neoplasm. We report the case of an 82-year-old man who presented with phimosis. The patient also complained of frequent and painful urination. Upon examination a painless penile ulcer and multiple enlarged inguinal lymph nodes were found. The shaft of the penis and the prostate were hard on palpation. Abdominal and transrectal ultrasound examination confirmed the involvement of the penis shaft and the prostate and also revealed involvement of the urinary bladder. Biopsy showed diffuse, large B-cell lymphoma. The patient was treated with systemic chemotherapy with

[Solitary intrapulmonary fibrous tumor with an adenofibromatous pattern: A case report].

Solitary fibrous tumor is a neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that generally occurs in the pleura and is usually benign. An intrapulmonary location is rare and the adenofibromatous pattern is even more infrequent. We present a case of a solitary intrapulmonary fibrous tumor with adenofibromatous characteristics in a patient with a history of adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Immunohistochemically, the tumor was positive for STAT6, CD34 and Bcl-2.

Phase II trial with D-Trp-6-LH-RH in prostatic carcinoma: comparison with other hormonal agents.

Various approaches to hormonal treatment of prostate carcinoma are discussed. Eighty-one patients with prostatic carcinoma, eight with stage B, nine with stage C, and 64 with stage D disease, were treated subcutaneously daily for 3 months with the LH-RH agonist D-Trp-6-LH-RH (Decapeptyl) in order to evaluate the incidence of remissions according to WHO recommendations for oncologic trials. The findings were compared to those obtained with other hormonal therapies of prostatic carcinoma according to the statistical method of "expected response rate" as adapted by Lee and Wesley for phase II tri

Immunohistochemical Reactivity of Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen in Salivary Gland Tumors.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is overexpressed in the prostate gland and prostate cancer. PSMA has been recently used in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging and targeted alpha-radiation therapy (TAT) for prostate cancer. Recently, the tubarial gland, a type of minor salivary gland that is described as a new organ situated in the pharynx, is reported to express PMSA. Here, we studied the expression of PSMA in common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. We performed immunohistochemistry for PSMA in 55 salivary

Cystic Prostatic Carcinoma - A Clinical Case and Literature Review.

Cystic formations in the prostate are quite common, but the vast majority are benign. The cystic form of prostate adenocarcinoma can present unexpected symptoms, and management can be difficult because of the local advanced stage of the disease. A unique feature of this case is the surgical local cancer treatment. In this clinical case, we describe the literature surrounding this rare form of neoplasm. We present a clinical case of a rare form of prostate cancer in a 71-year-old male who was admitted to ER with acute urinary retention. A huge obstructing prostatic cyst was revealed. After succ

The role of genetic polymorphisms in endolysosomal ion channels TPC2 and P2RX4 in cancer pathogenesis, prognosis, and diagnosis: a genetic association in the UK Biobank.

Recent studies have implicated important roles for endolysosomal ion channels in cancer biology. We used UK Biobank data to characterise the relationships between genetic variants in two genes coding for endolysosomal ion channels-i.e. TPCN2 and P2RX4-and cancer in terms of the definition of tumour types, susceptibility, and prognosis. We investigated these relationships at both global and local levels with regard to specific types of cancer, including malignant neoplasms of the brain, breast, bronchus, lung, colon, lymphoid and haematopoietic systems, skin, ovary, prostate, rectum, thyroid gl

Testicular Teratocarcinoma in a Ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 7-month-old male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of unilateral testicular enlargement. Microscopic examination of the left testicle revealed a neoplasm with differentiation along multiple cell lines (ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm) including respiratory epithelium, bone and haired skin. A poorly differentiated epithelial component was dispersed throughout the neoplasm with invasion of testicular lymphatics. The animal developed progressive dysuria and was euthanized. At necropsy, metastasis of the poorly differentiated epithelial component was present in th

Update: prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer represents a major health-care issue for older men. Recent technical advances in imaging, serum markers, and treatment hold great promise. Further insight into the natural history and biologic potential of this ubiquitous neoplasm is necessary before we can make rational decisions about early detection and newer treatment approaches.

[High Frequency of Mesenteric Panniculitis in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Prostate Cancer: Study in 1,500 Oncologic Patients Undergoing Staging].

UNLABELLED: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is an uncommon, benign, condition that involves the mesenteric root. It may be idiopathic, or be associated with an inflammatory or malignant neoplasm. AIM: To establish the frequency of MP in oncologic patients according to the type of cancer. METHOD: Images of PET/CT performed between January 2008 and December 2019 on recently diagnosed oncologic patients were reviewed searching for MP. MP was defined as increased density and volume of mesenteric root fat, associated with nodules and/or lymph nodes, with or without pseudocapsule. Patients who had re

Imaging of the seminal vesicle and vas deferens.

The seminal vesicle (SV) and vas deferens (VD) are ancillary but essential urogenital organs. Understanding their embryologic features and anatomy can be helpful in evaluating various disorders of these organs. Recently, cross-sectional imaging modalities, including ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, have been increasingly used for evaluation of the SV and VD. The development of these organs is closely related to that of urinary organs, including the kidneys and ureters. Frequently, unilateral SV agenesis is associated with renal agenesis, and bilateral
